Was the iTunes card issued in the same country as your account is based (they are only valid in their country of issue) ? If it was and this page doesn't help then you will need to try contacting iTunes Support (you will probably need to give them images of the front and back of the card, and possibly its receipt) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes

What you normally should do when you have an iTunes card that has not been activated is go back the retailer from whom you purchased the card and discuss the problem with them. They should either correctly activate the card or give you a new one. If they refuse to help, as some retailers do, or you don't know or can't get to the retailer, go here:

and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store. They will ask for a scan of the front and back sides of the card as well as a scan of the receipt

I've been having the same issues too, and thought it was just my outdated computer or account?!
Every time I try to purchase a song, "session has timed out" shows up after I click "agree" to the terms!? I seem to be in the exact same scenario as 'SportsBarn' above: Itunes support have replied repeatedly with the same "solutions" but nothing has helped or even been applicable. I have an older laptop, 2005 Powerbook running OS X 10.4 Tiger so it's not compatible with the latest iTunes 10.5.2 which requires minimum OS X 10.5. I've been using the balance already in my iTunes account (from redeemed giftcards over the past few years) with no problem, until recently (my last successful purchase was October 2011). I wonder if it's the older OS or just a redemption glitch even with newer computers?

After an unsuccessful itunes update i now get an "msvcr80.dll file is missing on my computer message. I tried reinstalling it for the microsoft site and it says it was successful but i still get the error message when i reboot. Any suggestions? Thanks

When you uninstall, the items you uninstall and the order in which you do so are particularly important:
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
Let us know if following that article and uninstalling those components in that order helped the situation.

If you still can't redeem your card, then you should contact iTunes Store Customer Support via http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ and provide the serial number on the back of your gift card. The article above shows you how to locate the serial number.

Why do I get an error code 5002 when trying to redeem an iTunes gift card?

I have an iTunes gift card and everytime I enter the redemption code I get an error code 5002. Sure would like to be able to redeem my card.

This alert is often the result of an issue with verifying your billing.
Quit iTunes.
Open iTunes.
Test the issue.
If it persists, sign in to store.apple.com using your iTunes account
Click on Change account information
Modify or remove your credit card information.
Click Continue.
Test the issue.
