The phone is backed up on ICloud. I connected it to my computer to download some photos and Itunes indicated that and update was available for the phone 7.0.2. So I let it download the update. I later received a message that the update was unsuccessful. The creen on the iphone is showing the itune symbol and a cable. But itunes will not recognise the phone.
Turning the phone on and off comes up with the same screen. I have tried pressing the ON Off Button and the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds but get the same result.

and have to restore manually. you can do this by shift + mouse click the restore button in iTunes this will give you an opendialogue box to select the iPSW from which you want to update your iPhone. please make sure you have all the backup stored since this will be a restore not an update so you data will be lost and you will have to restore your data from backup.

Your iPhone is in recovery mode and because a reset did not resolve the issue you are left with plugging the iPhone into a computer with iTunes and restoring it to factory settings.

This happens when the operating system on the phone becomes corrupted. This could be because of a failed update to the OS or even a hardware failure due to being dropped or submerged in water. If you follow the instructions indicated, hopefully iTunes will be able to restore the OS and afterward you can restore the settings from a backup (assuming you have one).

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times. -

i bought a new ipad2 everything was working then i did the upgrade oo 7.0 and the ipad never worked after it shows the ipad symbol and the usb cord!

But... if the Device has been Modified / Hacked / Jailbroken... this will Not necessarily work. -

Help Me PlzGo to the Windows Control Panel and select Boot Camp applet. In that applet there is a Boot Drive option. Select Mac OS X.
Or restart the system and hold down the Option key for a few second. A Boot Menu screen will come up. Select Macintosh HD.
Once in OS X go to the Sys Prefences, Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD Mt Lion 10.8.2 and click Restart then Restart again. the system will now restart in Mac OS X.
To boot back to Windows do the same, Startup Disk, and select Windows then Restart and Restart again. -

You Have to Sync it to your computer through itunes and setup your iTouch if you havent already otherwise u cant do anything with the iTouch until u do this..wondered the same thing when i purchased my iTouch over a year ago until i finally downloaded itunes and connected mine and completed the setup..hope this helps..

HELP! Yesterday my itouch 2nd generation 16Gb turned off and so i charged it thinking it would turn on like usual but when i turned it on, the apple showed up and then it would show the itunes symbol and the cord that you use to connect your ipod to the computer. So thinking that it would unlock my itouch, i plugged it into the computer but then a box appeared that said.... "itunes could not connect to your ipod "ipod touch" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the ipod before it can be used with itunes." But the problem with that is that i can't get onto my ipod because of the symbol saying htat i need to plug it into the computer and connect with itunes. Is there anything i can do to get it to unfreeze so i can enter my passcode??
p.s... I tried turning it off and turning it back on and i also tried pressing the top button and the center button trying to unfreeze my ipod touch.this might work..I had the same problem and it worked for me...
You need to put your touch into recovery mode and then restore it. Here's how:
1. Disconnect it from your computer
2. Hold down the Sleep/Wake switch until you see the red slider. Turn it off.

4. Hold down the Home button and keep holding it down while you plug the iPod back into your computer.
5. Keep holding down the Home button until iTunes responds with "and iPod has been detected in Recovery Mode". Release the Home button and follow the onscreen instructions to restore. -

For that you will need to follow this.
Passcode Locked or Disabled
