Update Server
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

If the reset does no work
    Try:
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Maybe the replacement is defective.

Try doing a Spotlight search for the Contacts app.

  • I am trying to reset my 4th generation ipod touch via itunes (as I cannot remember parental controls code). In itunes it does a download but then says the software was corrupted during download. Itunes is up to date. Operating system is vista. Any ideas?

I have given my 4th generation ipod touch to my husband and he wants to download some in app purchases, so I am trying to reset it via itunes. I dont remember setting parental controls but I must have at some point, maybe when I lent it to the kids. But I cannot remember the password and nothing I have tried works. So I have backed the ipod up and am trying to reset it but after speding 10 minutes doing a download I get a message that says:
"The softwaar for the iPod was corrupted during download. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later"
I have tried many times. All the settings are correct, and the network seems to be working fine in all respects.
    Any advice very much appreciated.
    Thank you
UPDATE - decided to try one more time after trying for hours and it has worked! I now suspect it may have been because my son was playing an online game. Though we have plenty of bandwidth. But in case, I guess it could be a bandwidth problem.

A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (or if you forgot your passcode)
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
If you need to restore your device or if you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to
             update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

    HELP
Help needed to update a 4th gen ipod touch running version 4.3.5 (8L1) to the latest 6.0 version.  When I connect and try to update i keep getting a box which states that a connection error occured and I cannot update.
I have been given a new laptop for xmas which runs on windows 8, and the new itunes version (which is in itself a hurdle as I am a technophobe!) and this is all becoming a bit fustrating.
I have connected, updated and synced my iphone successfully, but just hit a brick wall on the ipod.  (which incidentally maybe where this laptop will end up!!)
Help if you can, but in laymans terms.......

Thank you for you input so far.....
I think we are getting nearer to the solution sort of!
Let me get this straight...... I have paid for content on itunes, bought the apple devicds in order to play said content, now I have to subscribe $25 for the privilage of playing MY library content on MY other devices. Which wasn't such an issue to do before the new and improved itunes version!!
Have I got that correct.  I think I cannot associate my other iOS devices with my library because I am unwilling to pay further through the nose!!!???  or am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Frustrated even more now!!

Hi i have recently updated my 1st generation ipod touch to find that it has wiped all my purchased music  .My itunes libray is on an old laptop i no longer have . any ideas please

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.

  • I have a 4th generation ipod touch and I want to move my itunes library to a different computer, can I just download itunes or will my ipod software be too old?

  • I am trying to update my second generation iPod touch to iOs5

whenever i plug it in to itunes and click "check for update" it says "the iPod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later" but my wifi is on just not the VPN.  My iPod works on the internet and everything but i just want to update it.  I dont know if i should update iTunes or what to do.  Please help, i have a windows computer from two years ago.  I dont know how to turn on the VPN or how to filll in the information.  I have "tried again later" and it doesnt work.  Please helppp!! My version right now is 4.2.1 (8C148) and i want it at iOs5

You can use app software for iOS 4.2.1 or earlier but it is becoming difficult to find.  You may want to look at "VIntApps" in the Apple app store that makes this much easier.
    https://www.facebook.com/VintApps313
Although I wrote my 99 cent app specifically to help solve this problem, I need to add that "I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link."
Even though there are thousands of apps to choose from.  They will definitively not be the latest greatest.  Updating the model and passing the older model to another is still the best choice.

  • What kind of case is best for the 4th generation ipod touch and where can i buy it?

I'm interested in buying the best case to protect my ipod touch 4th generation. What do you recommend  and where can I buy it? I prefer not ordering it online.

There are a lot of interesting educatives apps for iPod touch that don' exist for a Mac and I'd like to use them in my Mac. How could I connect the Ipod to a Mac in order to see and use the ipod apps in the Mac?

    Thanks.

Are you sure you are following the instructions correctly?  Placing the iPod in recovery mode wil allow you to bypass the passcode lock.  If it's still asking you for the passcode, you aren't doing something correctly.  Keep trying.
If no luck there, try DFU mode as well.

  • I have lost a 4th Generation iPod Touch and i was wondering how apple can help me find it.I all ready putthe find my Phone it but who ever has it didn't put it on the internet,on it

How can i Contact apple to find my iPod touch?

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.
    - Apple will do nothing without a court order
Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product

  • I have a 4th generation IPod touch, and I can't get the I o s 7 update yet. I really want to get a few games, but I can't because they require I o s 7. When will I be able to get the I O S 7 update?

Please help me!!!    I need that game.

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • I have the 4th generation iPod touch and my friend changed the iPod passcode and she cant remember it. Im on the iPod, Im not locked out. Im wondering if there is a way to change the passcode from inside the ipod settings or something?

My friend cant remember the password. Can I change it from inside the iPod settings or something?

Your friend could only have changed it if they had your original passcode - you have to be able to enter the current passcode to change it to a new one.  Once you restore it now, I would then change it and NOT give it out to people.
P.S. if you have a backup from when it still had your passcode on it, just restore from that backup and it should set the passcode back to what you had.
Without that backup, you will have to restore as new, and set everything up again from scratch.

  • My notes keep disappearing from my 4th generation iPod touch and my iPad. Can I get them back?
