When i tried updating my iphone 4 to the latest IOS version 7.1.1 and at the end of the update it has the icon connect to itunes. When i try connecting to itunes it still doesnt program. Why is this? How can i fix it?

It sounds like you had been updating the phone and now it is in recovery mode. Take a look at this info first:
If you started your device in recovery mode by mistake, restart it to exit recovery mode. Or you can just wait—after 15 minutes the device will exit recovery mode by itself.
If you are unable to get out of Recovery Mode, use the following article to restore your device with iTunes:

The plus point of using my windows 7 ultimate PC, even i got the same error twice or thrice but I REUME ALL & then I got the result. I don't know what was the problem updating with my MacBook Pro but FINALLY I SUCCEDED:-) ENJOY GUYS

Are you sure you have a 3GS and not a 3G? The 3G cannot be updated to iOS5. What version are you on now?... Settings > General > About > Version

Try Restoring it 3 times in a row and see if that works.
If not that error can indicate one of two things: Your iPhone was at one time jailbroken, had the iOS version rolled back, or ran an unauthorized beta and if none of those things are true it is a hardware error.

Try this:

In short:
1) Make sure the iPhone is not connected to USB and, if it is on, turn it off by holding the power button and the home button together(takes about 6 seconds)
2) Once it's completely off, hold down the home button
3) While holding home, connect the USB cable and keep holding home until iTunes recognises the iPhone
It will force the iPhone into recovery mode, then you can connect to iTunes and restore your backup. Bear in mind that it will likely need to be updated to 5.0.1 anyway.

sync your phone to itunes, then it should say update available. I suggest doing a backup of your phone first prior to updating your phone.
