I tunes base library....Missing files...How to recover

Recent laptop crash, (CPU)...I-tunes library was complete...Since have new unit downloaded library..Since have noticed many files missing, un sure but seem to be mostly purchased items, as my 90% of my base music came from home cd's...
Have two 3 i-pods (2) classic and newer version for teenage son...Much more and the missing loaded on units than on my base library...
Is it possible to re/back load my base library transfering my files from these ipods without losing anything more...
If possible, I would require step by step (non assumed) directions as I am nowhere near the most computer/tech savy person in my livingroom, not th block...
As a note I have a 1t seagate external hard drive which i obviously did not do a good/complete job of saving my entire library...

Scenario - Please select a file >> Alt+Enter >> See the location of this file as shown in the Information panel. This location is what Organizer catalog looks for when attempting to display the selected file. If the file is not present at this location, it will call it "missing".
Reconnect workflow will help you update Organizer catalog about the changed location of your files. Were you able to reconnect them?
If not, please share a screenshot of the scenario I mentioned above.
Where are these files present on your hard disk? external hard disk? network location?

Did you convert a beta library?
This could be that you are seeing the previews, do they have a ? in the top right corner?
If so click on that and see if you can locate them.

Where are you importing from – a camera or computer? If you are optimizing at import, make sure the background processes are completed. (Command-9)

Files disappeared from library, "missing" files not really missing

I had a folder with 3 files in different formats for each image. These were imported several days ago, grouped into stacks, captioned, tagged, etc. and synced to the files. They continued to exist in the library some time afterward, but today when I opened lightroom all of the jpg versions of all of the images and all 3 formats of one image in particular had vanished from the library. It did not claim that it could not find them on disk (and in fact the files *do* still exist on disk right where they should), they just didn't show up. I was able to re-import all of the jpg images without trouble, but for the other two formats of the one missing image, importing one of them fails because it "already exists in the library," and the other one is willing to import but then doesn't show up in the folder or the recently imported files list. When I try to synchronize the folder, it suggests that I import that file, but it never actually does. Since importing the jpgs, it also suggests that I remove 53 "missing" files, the number of jpgs imported. When I view the missing files in the library, it shows only 2 of the jpgs, one of which belongs with the files that will not import and neither of which is actually missing--they can both be synchronized just fine by clicking the little synchronize icon on the actual photo.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how I might be able to get the files that won't import back into the library? And how to be sure that files won't just go away on their own again?
Edit: to be clear, missing versions of files were definitely not stacked with the other ones and the "don't import duplicates" box was not checked when re-importing the ones that won't re-import

I managed to get the photos that wouldn't import back in by deleting them directly out of the database and then reimporting them into lightroom. I'm a little concerned that they disappeared in the library view in the first place, though. Does this sort of thing happen often, and under what circumstances? I'm still in the free trial period and was very close to buying the program, but now I'm not so sure. If I'm using an application to manage my photos, I want to know that it's actually managing all of the photos I put into it and not randomly forgetting about them.
I'm still having the not-really-missing files problem, though. I think it may actually be because they got associated as "sidecar" files somehow and are now in there twice, once as the sidecar file and another time as a separate jpg image. I'm not really sure why only one of them shows up in the missing images view, I think it might be because I edited that one so it's in a slightly different state from the others? If there are any tips on how to resolve that state, I'm all ears, I'd like it to stop telling me I have 53 missing files when I don't.

Music library missing files

My old Ipod died and I wanted to load my itunes songs onto my son's extra ipod. When I did, only 2/3 of the songs were transfered, with the rest having !next to the songs with the message - "the song could not be used becasue the origional file could not be found. would you like to look for it." my problem is that I can not find the files anywhere on my computer. I am the only one to have music on it. how do I fis this and why did it happen? where did the files go since i put them into itunes?

I think I'm on to something. Are you missing other things from the Library in addition to music files? Do me a favor and do a cmd-i (Get Info) on the music/app/movie files you're missing. When iTunes asks you if you'd like to look for the file, answer No or Cancel - the info window should open.
At the bottom of the window, what does the "Location" say? Does it say:
file:///localhost/Users/username/.Trash/iTunes/...
That's the last "known" location of the missing files. In my case, the files were automatically moved to the user's Trash. If you haven't Emptied your Trash yet, the files might still be there. If you have Emptied your Trash, then the files are gone - but that means we have the same EXACT symptoms.

Damaged iTunes Library.itl file, anyway to recover?? pls help!

My harddrive has gone through some bad blocks and subsequently had to be replaced. I'm now going through and trying to salvage all that I can off the old HD, however it looks like one of the corrupted/damaged files is the one i need most; the "iTunes Library.itl" and the "iTunes Music Library.xml" files which are found in the iTunes folder. I organise a lot of music via playlists and I believe that these two files are the two that hold all the playlist data.
Apart from data recovery centers, is there any other possible way that I could recover these two files? Seems crazy that I would spend $800 on recovering about 50mb, however they are incredibly important!

first check to see if the itunes .itl library file, or any folders in the folder heirarchy above it have somehow been set to "read only". if they have, try switching that off.
What are the iTunes Library files?

To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

As long as don't have any metadata attached to the broken files which you would like to preserve...
You could use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to "check for dead tracks on startup"

Or
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.
You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.
If there are ratings, play counts etc. attached to the broken links, but you've since reimported the files from another location then I have a script called FindTracks that could probably repair the broken links, and another called DeDuper that could dedupe and gather up the stats while preserving playlist membership etc.

3000 missing files - how to re-locate?

I have stupidly moved folders outside LR in Mac finder. I no whave nearly 3000 mmissing files. Obviously this is too many to realistically re-locate each file in turn. So is there a way I can re-locate the files automatically somehow. They are already listed in a MIssing Photographs catalogue. I suppose that I could delete them all from LR then re-import but then I would lose all my keyword data and mess up my collections. Any way to put right this dumb mistake?

An easy way is to right-click on the top-level folder and reconnect to the folder you moved them to. LR will then reconnect all images below it, automatically.
If you have multiple top-level folders (some people do), then you have two choices. Either reconnect each one, or select one and "promote parent" until all of the folders are under a parent folder. Then reconnect the parent, and you're good to go.
I made sure my "top level" folder was one level down for this reason. Instead of placing a bunch of folders in the root directory of a disk, for example, I have one folder called "CanonPhotos" as my top level folder, and all my images are under there.
Move it where you will, then reconnect one folder. Works for me!

Oh, I didn't mean to imply all my images were in one folder, they aren't. The folders just happen to be in one parent folder, not the root directory of the disk!

Sudden Failure to Back Up Files - How to Recover?

After successfully backing up files from my desktop computer for several months, I got a failure, and subsequently messages that read "Time Machine is read-only". Below is the BuddyShare diagnosis for the day it happened.
I am using TM to back up both my desktop and my laptop computers.
Can I recover easily? Do I need to re-format? If so, how do I do that, and can I do it for the desktop only?

Depends. If they're both in the same partition, you can't do this without erasing both sets of backups. If it ever comes to that, I'd recommend putting two partitions on your TM disk, one for the exclusive use of TM on each Mac. Then all you have to do is erase the partition in question.

Lost control file, how to recover them

I have Oracle 11G running on RHEL 5.2 server and unexpectedly I can't start database after a server reboot. I have executed the following commands,

There are are no control files in the directory and I couldn't find them on the disk. Unfortunately, I do not have backups for dbs (this is a staging server). Is there any way we can recover those files or fix the problem ?

And yes, if the datafiles and redos are located in another location then we can recreate the controlfile.
But since it is a test system, I dont think there will be files in another location...

Perhaps the answer is to ls -l /u01/app/oracle/oradata
Maybe it's TESTDB or some for some other reason testdb really isn't the sid.
If it's a staging environment, where do things come from? If the data files are found on the staging server, but no controlfiles, perhaps alter database backup controlfile to trace on the source server might give something to work with.

Previous itunes library playlist damaged - how to recover?

my powerbook g4 is acting weird, lately. yesterday, i had to re-install all my previous accounts into mail, today, my itunes library (itunes 6.0.4) shows up as a damaged library and therefore cannot be opened. i would have to initiate a new playlist, which takes a lot of time. isn't there any chance to recover the damaged library? and why is it damaged at all?

If you've got a recently synched iPod you could use a
tool like SENUTI to retrieve you playlists.
hm,...what does it cost? well,...it shouldn't be an option to download another software to run a mac, right? i mean, aren't they suppose to be more reliable than pc's? which means: isn't there another option other than downloading a software solution?

Which backup files are you wanting to read ?
If you didn't backup by yourself, there are no backup available.
It's astonishing to met users using an application without reading the user guide to know which features are available.
*_There is no backup tool in iWork applications_* and I'm quite sure that there will never be one because in Lion the backup feature is a component of the Operating System.
