I Tunes Error -2096

I can't connect to the I Tunes Store. I receive the error message:"We could not complete your ITunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-2096). There was an error in the ITunes Store. Please try again later."
I get this message for days. I have no idea what's going on. I can access all the music and stuff. But I can't sign in.
Help please!

Hello Stefansoehne,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try flushing your DNS cache by issuing the following command in a Terminal window. Many other users receiving the same error have reported that they were able to resolve the issue by clearing out the DNS cache.
*sudo dscacheutil -flushcache*
(You'll need to enter your Admin password)
Hope it helps.

  • An error comes up when trying to play tunes quick time failed to initialise error-2096 and screen goes weird ?? frustrated.

An error 2096 comes up on screen when trying to play iTunes from quick time says to uninstall tunes then re-install !! Started to happen after last upgrade from quick +iTunes and is frustrating as can't play anything ,is on Windows XP and was fine till now! Thanks in advance.

Is your QuickTime working if you try to open it?
If you get a 2096 error, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875
    Otherwise see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489
If your QuickTime works normally let me know.
The 2096 error has often been associated with compatability mode problems.
Otherwise try a complete removal of all iTunes related programs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Then download and install the version of Quicktime that does not include iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    Check that it works
    Then try installing iTunes.

    error -2096
A -2096 can indicate that something is checked in your iTunes compatibility mode tab. (It could also indicate something is checked in the QuickTime compatibility mode tab, but that seems less likely in this case given that your QuickTime Player is launching.)
Try the following document, but be sure that no checkboxes are selected in the compatibility tab (not just the Modalità di compatibilità checkbox):
[iTunes per Windows: come disattivare la modalità di compatibilità|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489?viewlocale=it_IT]

  • I tunes wont launch - quicktime error -2096

I am using XP sp2. Have de-installed itunes and quicktime and gone for a clean new download and install of both. But I still get this error when opening itunes - Quicktime failed to initialise (error -2096) etc.
This is v. frustrating - any suggestions?

You need to check that compatability mode is not on for Quicktime:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
None of the checkboxes should be checked on the compatability tab.
It is also advisable to check the same thing for iTunes.exe in Program Files\iTunes.

  • Error 2096

i try to open itunes and it wont open says quicktime is needed and to re install i tunes i have down it about 3 times and nothing have re installed quicktime and again nothing i have also made sure all components are deleted and re installed and still nothing however i did create a new user account and i tunes seems to run in that account just not mine i have been battling with this for about a week now and need some serious help ive tried EVERYTHING !

i try to open itunes and it wont open says quicktime is needed and to re install i tunes
With a 2096, we first try to make sure that neither iTunes nor the QuickTime Player are running in compatibility mode.
    Start with the following document:
[Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875]
But if none of the boxes are checked in there, check on the iTunes compatibility mode tab:
[iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489]
(Also make sure that none of the boxes are checked in the iTunes compatibility mode tab, not just the Compatibility mode checkbox.)

  • Quicktime failure to initialize error 2096

I have been using quick time and windows media for ages for some reason possibly the upgrade to itune 7 I have a problem to run quicktime . Uninstalling and re installing time and again using all tips I have been able to find has not solved this problem. Quicktime will not install and run correctly.
I cannot actually find out what error 2096 relates to ? Any ideas? and Solutions will be gratefully received. I have presently uninstalled both after wasting hours on possible solutions
    many thanks David1938

Right I followed your instructions and it worked so far, I got QT loaded onto C.drive Ok I even upgraded it to pro and started to test. First thinhg it wanted to do was upload I-tunes , no problem I had uninstalled that previously so I needed it back again. Then I decide to start testing
One of the original reason this started going wrong was the fact that on one of my websites I had introduced a web blog and some visual content this was also being used as a podcast so it was picking up in itunes. When I was clicking on the image, there are two black screens on this page http://www.fairiesworld.com/weblog/ it was playing back with a strange echo, clicky corrupted sound file. I thought it was the QT that was doing it. I had received the advice to upgrade to the 7 version , the previous version worked OK. Even the podcast was distorted sound on this machine
My webmaster(apple mac ) and my daughters PC were ok for sound, just mine was misbehaving. Then came the uninstalls and installs and now what have I got.
Testing on my webblog through OE I get a white blank page on both not a black one and neither is there any sound. A right click on properties shows nothing but the word about.blank. Alarm bells ring as I have experience about blank before but I have webroot and norton symantic antivirus updated and running all the time. I have done more spyware and virus scans and nothing has emerged.
If I open from firefox then I get a qt logo appearing in the white screens but no sound and it won't cliick to start either. So I tried a Itune film trailer that too was distorted sound. I can't help wondering if there is a clash with the latest windows media that is have installed, but I think it must be far more fundemental than that
I am reluctant to uninstall now I have them both but what might be the solution top the problem I am having it makes me wonder
    best
    David

  • DOWNLOAD ITUNES 7.6- RESPONSE "QUICKTIME FAILED TO INITIALIZE, ERROR 2096

I just tried to upgrade to I-Tunes 7.6. Installation seemed to work, yet I get a response now (when I try to go into I-Tunes)- "Quicktime failed to initialize (error 2096)- please reinstall I-Tunes", and now I can't access I-Tunes at all. I've been browsing the discussion boards for an answer, but haven't located a good response yet. I have Windows XP on a Dell computer. Any solutions would be appreciated!

Many thanks for your quick reply! However, in browsing through some old discussions (from back in Nov. 2007), I found this response which worked beautifully & I got everything back. Word to the wise...don't upgrade I-Tunes(read below):
+I was having the same problem, i upgraded to the new iTunes & it wouldn't open cause of an error with Quicktime.+
+On another topic thread, Rob Austin suggested to go to this website http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime72forwindows.html+
+IT WORKS!!! Just delete Quicktime from your computer & download Quicktime from the link & iTunes will re-open. I got all my songs back, everything was the same, even my playlists.+
    +Thanks Rob!!!+

  • My itunes will not open on my computer! I've uninstalled/re-installed my intunes 10.4 and quicktime countless of times, and nothing is working. Everytime I try to open my itunes it says "Quicktime error 2096", then tells me to reinstall itunes. Help?!...

  • Install itunes with error -2096

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
I have reinstalled many times, but it still appears that line.
So how can I install iTunes?

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
let's try getting the following possibilities off the table.
First, make sure you're not running QuickTime in any sort of compatibility mode, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... but if no joy there, also check to make sure you're not running iTunes in any sort of compatibility mode:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
(Make sure that all boxes in the iTunes Compatibility mode tab are unchecked, not just the compatibility box.)
    Any help with your 2096?

  • Can no longer open itunes Error:2096

Ok-using itunes for windows for years. No problem.
I tried to up date to the latest itunes version
    I am getting the message:
    Error:2096
Quicktime is reguired to run itunes. Please uninstall and then reinstall itunes.
I have done this several times.
    I have updated Windows
    I have installed, uninstalled Quicktime
    I have checked compatibility
I have contacted Apple support; they sent me here.
I had this problem about 2 months ago and Apple walked me through it. Now they cant find me case file and I can't remember what I did to fix and connect to itunes and my ipods and ipad...
    Any suggestions?

SO iTunes thinks you don't have Quicktime although you do have it.
This can be caused by a problem with the environmental variable path, although I don't normally associate this with the 2096 error.
There is normally an entry for Quicktime right at the end of PATH, and iTunes uses it.
However if any of the folders in path variable before Quicktime do not exist or cannot be reached, iTunes gives up and assumes you don't have Quicktime.
If you are and experience computer user this may be enough for you to investigate the problem.
If not I can give details.
AS a start you can look at the contents of the path variable by opening the cmd window. (type cmd into your run box).
Then copy&paste the following line into the cmd window and press return
    echo %path%
This will display the contents of the PATH variable.
If you need detailed help post back.

  • How to install iTunes error-2096???????

I got an Ipod Nano this Christmas so I had to update my itunes in order to be able to sync music to it. I have downloaded the newest version multiple times and it doesn't work. When I try to open it, it tells me Quicktime failed to initialize (error-2096) Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes. I installed Windows Install clean up to remove previous iTunes software but still haven't been able to open it. As I type this, I am downloading iTunes again. I am going crazy, I need my music!!!!! Please HELP!!!

You need to make sure both iTunes and QuickTime are NOT running in compatability mode...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212

This sorted my -2096 error out straight away without having to reinstall, etc.

  • I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096)"

I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).  I have removed both itunes and quicktime from my computer and re-installed them and I still get the same message.  What do I do to get itunes to work?

That one is often a compatibility mode problem. Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode

  • When I try to open iTunes, I receive a QuickTime failed to initialize (error-2096).

When I try to open iTunes, I receive:  "QuickTime failed to initialize (error - 2096).  It also tells me to unistall iTunes and then install iTunes again.  If I uninstall iTunes, will I lose all my songs and videos?

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
    download iTunes again from Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.

  • Error -2096 on Mac when trying to connect to iTunes Store

For at least two months, my computer has not been able to log in to the apple store. I keep getting the message "error (-2096)". I have talked to many apple store representatives who have asked me to delete and re-download iTunes, which has not helped. Some have given me the tutorial for Windows, and that obviously did not help either. I think I could be something to do with my ISP address, but I have no idea how to go about fixing that. The main iTunes store page shows up with the available music, etc. but I just can't log in or buy anything. So frustrating! anyone who knows how to go about fixing this, please help! Thanks.
