I-tunes - moving songs in library

Hi. Anyone know how I can move the position of individual tracks within my i-tunes library?
Quite a few songs from certain albums are scattered all over the place but I can't seem to manage to cut and paste them back into position. thanks a lot.

Click on the far left column header, the one without a label.  This allows you to manually sort the tracks when displayed in manual mode.

  • Moving songs in Library to correct Album play order

I'm trying to correct the playing order of songs in the library, to the original album order. Drag and drop does not work. Please help

    Hessian Prince -
I have this problem sometimes, too. It seems to happen more with Windows computers.
    * First, sort your music by Albums. ( If it's anything like some of mine, it sometimes goes 9, 10, 11, 12, 1, 3, 7...etc.)
    * Right click the first song that shows up in the Album list, and choose "Get Info".
    * Then click on the second tab marked "Info".
    * On the right hand side, you'll see Year, Track Number, and Disc Number.
    * I usually put a number 1 where it says "Disc Number, XX of XX", if for nothing else than a place holder.
    * Whether you want to put something there or not, make sure EVERY song on the album is tagged the same way.
That usually takes care of it for me. When doing the drag and drop, for some reason not all of the songs get processed the same way. This also happens sometimes during the encoding process.

  • Moving songs from library to playlist in iPhone

Hi all, I'm trying to move songs from my library to a playlist in my iPhone using iTunes in my Mac. Used to be able to just click and drag, but that doesn't seem to work. Help?

Update your Mac OS. Apple menu > Software Update (or update your signature whioch shows Mac OS X 10.4.3).
I highly suggest you create the playlist in iTunes, edit the playlist in iTunes then drag the playlist to teh iphone.
Don't create it on the iPhone using iTunes.
Which version of iTunes are you using?
You have to check Manually manage Music & Videos on the Summary page.

  • It appears that many of my tunes have been moved to another library location so I cannot click on a particular song in my itunes.  This affects syncing all my songs to my iphone.  What can I do to get them all back onto itunes?  tnx

  • Moving songs from a shared music library on my laptop to my desktop

I have the music libraries shared. But I cannot drag songs from my laptop music to iTunes in my desktop. Why not? These are not iTunes purchased songs but songs downloaded off internet in flac format, converted to aiff and loaded into iTunes on my laptop. I can play them but I cannot drag them into the desktop library. I want to put them on my iPod, which syncs with the desktop. I guess I'll have to burn them to cd to put them on the desktop. But it seems I should be able to copy from one shared library to another.

I have the music libraries shared.
Just to be clear, there is plain ol' sharing, and then there is "home sharing", the latter being an extension of the former. So, you turn on sharing, and then enable "home sharing", per those other articles I referenced in a prior post.
But if you are technically proficient, as JG said, copying the files using the Mac Finder is the best option. Preserves playlists, rankings, artwork, etc. The iTunes "home sharing" is really well suited for keeping two machines libraries synced and is probably a tad easier, but for that initial copying/moving of a library, doing it at the Mac Finder option is best, if a tad more complicated.

  • I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive. It re installed itself on the PC and there is now no more room. I cannot sync with the external version. My wife has is a user on the same computer and we have the same iTunes account. Can I uninstall

I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive due to lack of space on the PC. I uninstalled it from the PC at the time to increase space. My wife is a user on the computer and shares the same apple account. I discovered that iTunes was back on the PC hard drive when I tried to sync my iphone and it would not for lack of space on the PC. If I uninstall I tunes from the PC where I am the user will it affect my wife's itune account which is still on the PC?

Close iTunes. Click the icon to start it, then press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the iTunes folder on your external drive. That should bring back all your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. You may have to settle for removing and reloading the media onto the device again. That's not too bad, but what you don't want to have happen is your apps being removed and reloaded as then you can lose settings and data. If that looks likely backup and then restore the device rather than sync it.
If for some reason rebuilding the library the way you did has moved files around then the restored library may have trouble finding things. If so post back and I'll explain what to do...

  • Moving my itunes library to a removable hard drive.

I have moved my itunes library to a removable hard drive.  Every time I try to trash my old itunes file and access the removable HD, I cant find it from iTunes.  the only thing I can get it to do is to reload (duplicate) the entire 30gb library on the HD I want it off of.  Now I have 2 duplicate versions of my library, but still can't get it to keep the files on the HD.  Can someone help?
    Mark

    Hey Mark -
I think it's helpful to understand how this whole process works, and along the way, maybe we'll find where things went wrong for your situation.
iTunes can take as much or as little control of your library as you like, and different settings may be turned on or off for you as it's not always standardized.
If you'd like your entire iTunes Library to be transferred to one centralized, organized location (wherever - a local directory or an external drive, whatever you like), here's what you need to do (and if it's not too late, here's what you need to go "back" and do to make this transition smoother).
    - Open iTunes with the default library (where you had it).
    - Select iTunes, Preferences, Advanced, and ensure that "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" are both checked. This ensures that your music files are actually going TO the iTunes folder (and not, for example, just being referenced in a downloads folder which you'll probably move or delete later, breaking all those links) and that iTunes will sort your media by Artist\Album\Track Number Song.xxx instead of just moving the file as-is to a different spot.
    - Select File, Library, Organize Library and check "Consolidate files" and "Reorganize files in the folder 'iTunes Media'". These two marks take anything up-to-this-point and consolidates them into the one location, then uses its sorting structure to file it all away.
Then, Mark, I think it's appropriate to exit iTunes, take that entire library folder (YourUsername\Music\iTunes\) and put it wherever you'd like it to go. To tell iTunes where your new library is, hold the Option key and click on the iTunes application, then "Choose Library" and reference your new location.
I think it's important to follow the preliminary steps first. I've run into instances with customers where they've moved their Library file, referenced it by Choosing the new Library, and then thought everything was fine, only to find two weeks later when they try to play an audio file that the file isn't found - and this happens because the user moved the library FILE but didn't have a consolidated library TO move - the files were spread out all over the computer.
I hope that's helpful to you. I know it may be too late to "undo" yourself back to the beginning and do those organizational steps, but it's at least useful to know the process and how it might help you in the future.
    Best of luck.

  • I moved my itunes library to external drive and now itunes wont work.

I moved my itunes library to an external drive and now itunes cannot find the library. I followed a youtube video and all seemed to work fine until i deleted the old library and emptied the trash. Prior to deleting and emptying the trash I checked preferences to verify the path of Itunes was to the external drive. It seemed to work even when I moved the original library to the trash.
Now when I launch itunes the song listings show but the songs cant be found. I checked the volume of my itunes that I moved to the external and it was about 4 GB that i moved. I have approx 2000 songs.
    Any suggestions?

Hold down the alt/option Key when you start iTunes a dialog box will open
Select Choose Library and select the itunes library on your external drive

  • Problems after moving my iTunes library to an external hard drive.

Hello everyone. I recently followed the instructions in the Apple support article to move my iTunes library to an external drive. After completing all the steps in the article I consolidated my library on the new drive and verified that all of my files made it over to the new location. Then I deleted my music files from the old location and made sure, one more time, that my music and videos would still play through iTunes. Everything worked fine. The files in iTunes all referenced the new location. Then there was a problem...
The next morning I opened my iTunes and every song and video showed an exclamation point. None of them could find their files! I went into my iTunes preferences to confirm my setting were still good and found that my iTunes music folder had been changed back to its default location on my Mac hard drive! All the files are still located on my external drive where I consolidated them, but iTunes is trying to pull them from the default location.
    Why has this preference changed?
How can I fix what's happened?
And, how can I make sure this doesn't happen again?!
Thanks to anyone who wants to offer me some advice!
    Mike

I may have found an answer here:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive
They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

  • Itunes Match: iTunes will match songs in library, will not upload songs not in library. It

Itunes match is going through the endless 3 step cycle for several days now. It will match songs that are in the Itunes Library, it will not upload any songs that are not "matched"
I have tried alot of solutions, turn off match, turn back on, deauthorize, authorize, reboot, exit itunes, delete songs, add songs, turn off auto renew, plug in ethernet, wifi, basically anything posted on here.
Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Ive been an Apple customer for decades, and this is one of the times where I am greatly disappointed. Thanks.

Yes, itunes just sets a pointer to the Windows files in its ITL database.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
If you have itunes preference to copy files to your itunes music folder, then it does copy them there and you might now have two copies of the same song. But itunes will probably be using the copy in the itunes music folder.

  • Songs in Library are Not in iTunes Music Folder

I just had to Re-create my iTunes Library, which took quite some time since each song had to be selected individually and imported (per the instructions). Anyway, I have the box checked in Edit>Preferences>Advanced to automatically Copy Songs in Libary to the iTunes Music Folder; however, I just purchased two new songs and when I went to the ITMF to check to see if they were there neither the artists nor the songs are there. I then tried to add them manually by clicking on Add File to Library, but that did not add them to the iTunes Music Folder.
If anyone knows what I need to do and why iTunes is not automatically adding the new songs to the iTunes Music Folder, please let me know how to fix this.
    Thanks.

  • I have over 2000 tunes in my ITunes library but I cannot use them because their original files cannot be found. What can I do to correct this ?

I have over 2000 tunes in my ITunes library but I cannot use most of them because their "Original files" cannot be found. What can I do to correct this ?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • Can't copy a song from library into playlist. Screen message says "song can't be found." I know it's there, how do I access it?.

Can't copy a song from library into playlist. Screen message says "song can't be found." I know it's there, how do I access it?.

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

  • HT203167 Moved huge music library to external drive...now iTunes cannot find it

My massive music library was taking up all the room on my hard drive, so I moved everything to an external drive.  I then deleted the library from my hard drive.
The music is located in a folder named "iTunes Music" on my external drive.  iTunes cannot locate the songs now.
I've changed the media folder in preferences to: volumes/externalharddrive/iTunes Music and it still won't play the songs.
I've also tried selecting "Get Info" by right-clicking on a song, then manually directing iTunes to song.  It will play that individual song, and asks me if I want to use the folder to find other songs.  I click "Yes", but it's still not working.
Any ideas?  I've searched these forums and I'm stumped.
    Thanks!

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • Moved songs to new computer and protected songs won't play

I have purchased songs from Apple Store long enough that I have songs purchased under an old Apple ID and my new Apple ID.  Someone has started using my old Apple ID as their own.  When I moved my iTunes library from my old hard drive where the protected songs were authorized to my new hard drive, the protected songs purchased under the old ID asks for a password for the old ID which I no longer know. How do I reset the Apple ID on my old songs to my new Apple ID?

Items purchased under an account remain permanently linked to that account (whichis why it is not a good idea to use more than one).  I don't know if it is possible to use an ID that somebody used before, but you can bet the old account is still there and is still linked ot whatever email address you used last with it. You will have to authorize the new computer using the old account to play the protected songs, or upgrade them to unprotected (will still require access to the old account).
