I-tunes now freezes my computer

When I originally installed i-tunes this past November it worked flawlessly. I started getting update notices which I declined for a while but finally relented and accepted the upgrade. since the upgrade whenever I open i-tunes it will open but then completely freeze my computer and I have to restart. I have followed the instructions on the support pages to check if this happens across all user accounts (it does) and check for compatibility issues (there are none). I am running Vista 64-bit and have all current windows updates installed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled i-tunes and quicktime being sure to install the 64 bit version but this did not work either. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Try Resetting your iPod. Toggle the hold switch off and on a few times then hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then the menu button to go to the normal display: How to reset an iPod

  • IDVD 4 now freezes the entire computer during burning

    Hello,
iDVD 4 now freezes my entire computer during burning somewhere around stage 3. I can't even force quit. This never happened before - it does so while burning a project that had been burned successfully many times in the past and also new projects. I did have a bad RAM problem weeks ago - which is fixed now. Tried fixing permissions and cleared out enough free space. This is wierd - it has been working for years.
    Thanks very much,
    NIck M.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Now I have to covert my i tunes to MP-3  formate to insert them into a power point presentation These songs are in my i tunes library on my computer I know how stupid it sounds how to I get them into a file on my computer seperate from my i tunes library

S LIKE i BOUGHT SONGS NOW THERE IN THIS I TUNES LIBRARY THING NOW HOW TO GET THEM INTO A FILE SEPERATE IN MY DOCUMENTS ITS LIKE HOW DO i BREAK INTO THE I TUNES STORE ON MY COMPUTER AND GET THE MUSIC i BOUGHT AND PUT IT INTO MY COMPUTER FILE DOCUMENTS SO i CAN PUT IT INTO POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS AND IN A FORMATE COMPATABLE WITH WINDOWS POWER POINT.  I DID IT ONCE SEEMS LIKE I FORGOT THE RECIPE I DID IT WHEN MY KEY BOARD WAS DOWN JUST WITH THE MOUSE I MAILED IN MY LAP TOP GOT THE MUSIC OFF INTO A M-P3 PLAYER GOT IT BACK GOT THE I TUNES CARD DOWNLOADED SONGS NOW THERE TRAPED IN MY I TUNES LIBRARY LOL !!! ???

One way friends of mine have done it....use iTunes to burn a music CD with the songs (presuming it can still do that, haven't tried it in a while)
THen close iTunes and open windows media player. Use that to convet the CD file to MP3 (media player's default is to pull things in as wma, so you may need to change the preferences to mp3, or i'm pretty sure wma's work in power points)
Once media player converts the format you can insert it into your powerpoint.

Is there a way to get them off without deleting each one? Also how do i prevent this from happening again? can someone direct me to some info on multiple phones on one itunes i am lost.

    Hey there 79usma79!
I have a couple of articles for you that can help you troubleshoot the issues you are seeing with iTunes on Windows XP. The first is a general troubleshooting article, which can be found right here:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
This article can help you find out if there are any conflicts between your copy of Windows XP and iTunes, and can tell you what to do if there are. Before going down the troubleshooting route though, you should take a look at this article, which can help you back up your entire iTunes library to an external hard drive, so if this issue is recurring, you will be able to restore from that backup and will not have to worry about losing your playlists or music again:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • DVD Player freezing my computer

I have one DVD that will not play in DVD Player. It starts playing and then freezes on the legal notice. And it doesn't just freeze the application, it freezes the whole computer, and my computer screen starts flashing to black for split seconds at regular intervals. All I can do is a hard shut down with the power button. There's nothing out of the ordinary with the disc that I can tell. It's brand new without any scratches. DVD Player plays other DVDs just fine.
    Things I've tried:
Playing the DVD using VLC: No problem at all. Plays just fine.
Playing the DVD in DVD Player in a different user account: Still freezes the computer.
Playing the DVD on my family's PowerPC iMac G5: Plays in DVD Player without a hitch.
Playing the DVD on my brother's Intel MacBook Pro exactly like mine: Plays in DVD Player just fine.
Deleting DVD Player and CDInfo preferences & restarting: Still freezes my computer in DVD Player.
Now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks!

One more thing I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling DVD Player and repairing permissions. It didn't work. The DVD is still freezing my computer in DVD Player. Any ideas anyone?

  • ITunes CONSTANTLY freezing the computer

For about a week now iTunes just won't stop freezing my computer. Anything I do (listen to a song, download a song or update my iPhone/iPod), it will freeze. The computer starts making noises and eventually i have to shut off the computer and restart because it stops responding.
I've looked through all of the support procedures for things that are related to this and right now I have an empty iTunes library, and just when I thought it was fixed, I go to copy my information back into iTunes and it freezes again.
Please help! My iPhone has all my information on it, and I can no longer put any new things on it because of this.

    mangofreee,
Have you tried the steps in article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 ?

  • Firefox freezes the computer for about 20-30 seconds (not even Alt+Tab works), the screen blinks black and then it shows the desired page. Does that several times at the beginning, then sort of stabilizes.

Firefox freezes the computer for about 20-30 seconds (not even Alt+Tab works), the screen blinks black and then it shows the desired page. Does that several times at the beginning, then sort of stabilizes.
This happens even if I simply hover the mouse over bookmarks, not even opening a page.
And waiting for this to happen some times or closing and re-opening seems to make it work ok again.
I've already disabled almost all add-ons (I'm using only one for Flash and NoScript right now), reinstalled Firefox (8.0.1), restoring only the bookmarks from an older version.

'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

  • Iphoto will not print and the print command freezes my computer. Help!

I cannot print from iPhoto.  When I give the print command my cursor turns into a pinwheel and freezes my computer.

Apparently there's some preference files other than iPhoto's that may be causing the problem. Here's how to determine if that's the case:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
4 - reboot. Be sure to know your account's username and password as you will be asked to log in with it.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problem(s) is fixed.
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
8 - reboot and you're back as square one.
Note:  keep the Preference folder on the desktop until you're sure all registration info for your apps are working.  If not you can copy the required files from the desktop pref folder to the working one.

  • Photoshop cc freezing the computer (problem solved)

    Hi fellows,
My photoshop CC was freezing my computer, especially if I was using another program. In addition, when I started to paint the brush lagged a lot. The whole problem was the scratch disk, at the beginning I tried to increase memory usage, but it did not work.
So, I realized that in the scratch disk option (Edit>preference>scratch disks) the first option was the drive C (I have two HDs), what I did was, using the arrows on the right hand side, move the second disk to the first option, since it contain more space, it seems photoshop use it first than it moves to the second disk, if necessary. Thing is, it worked, now everything works properly. If you have only one HD, try to get rid of some unnecessary stuffs to get more space.
Please let me know if this worked for you

  • ITunes keeps freezing up and freezing my computer

I have a computer that runs on Vista.  Everything was fine untill my brother decided to be kind and update iTunes for me while trying to help me get some music off my iPod and back into iTunes.  THATS when the trouble started.  iTunes now freezes up when I open it, freezes my computer AND I ended up loosing everything on my iPod because of this problem (my husband got frusterated and unplugged the iPod, I think, when he should't have).  GAH!  Whats up???  I've already uninstalled and reinstalled iTuens a few times...no love. No, it also wont recongize my iPod, but i think once it stops freezing, that will go away.

Put your ipod into disk mode to restore it:
    Reset (Menu + Centre Button)
As it is resetting (when the screen goes blank) quickly hold down the Play and Centre buttons until your ipod tells you it is disk mode (indicated by a tick on the screen)
Plug your ipod in a Mac or a PC, eventually it will pick it up with iTunes and request a restore.
Never plug out an iPod if it has not been ejected.

  • My mac deleted folders when I clicked on them and is now freezing constantly.

I have a MacBook Pro and a few days ago when I went to open a folder I'd click it and the folder would disappear I still cannot find where they went. Now today my computer is freezing, running slow, not opening pages, and changing my wallpaper to default. I tried deleting unneeded applications and files, using a system cleaner, deleting my history, stop certain processes but nothing works. What's wrong with it? What can I do? And how do I recover those missing folders?

    Jennifer,
I’m sorry to say that you have some effort ahead of you to determine whether your first semester work can be recovered from your MacBook Pro’s internal disk — the ease of recovery in case of disaster is why a regular routine of making backups is important.
First, do you have the original grey installation DVDs that came in the box with your MacBook Pro when it was new? If you don’t, you will need to contact either Apple or iFixit and purchase a replacement pair. The grey installation DVDs are model-specific, so you will need to tell Apple or iFixit exactly which model you have — either a 15-inch Late 2008 MacBook Pro, or a 17-inch Late 2008 MacBook Pro, whichever model you have.
Next, you will need an external hard disk. Ideally, it should be at least three times the capacity of your internal disk, so that when your recovery effort is completed, it can be repurposed as a Time Machine backup disk; but your initial use for it will be as a bootable disk, so that no further chaos will be created on the internal disk. You will need the grey installation DVDs to format the external disk and install Leopard on it. (Some version of Leopard will be on your model’s grey installation DVDs.) When Leopard is installed on the external disk, you will be able to boot from it, at which point you can run Software Update to bring it as up to date as Leopard allows. After that, you can search your internal disk for your first semester work. Once you have salvaged whatever valuable data remains on your internal disk and have copied it to the external disk, you should shut down your MacBook Pro, detach the external disk, and use the grey installation DVDs to erase your internal disk and install Leopard on it. Once Leopard is installed on the internal disk, boot normally and run Software Update to bring it as up to date as Leopard allows. At this point, if you have the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, you can install Snow Leopard on your internal disk, and then use Software Update to bring it up to Mac OS X 10.6.8. (If you don’t have that white retail Snow Leopard DVD, it costs $20 from Apple.) Once you have 10.6.8 installed, you can then choose to download Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks from the Mac App Store (Lion and Mountain Lion also cost $20 each, if you have not previously purchased them; Mavericks is gratis), install that, and use Software Update to bring it up to date. Once you’ve installed whichever OS you’d like to have on your internal disk, you can then reconnect your external disk, and copy your valuable data from the external disk to the internal disk. You can then erase the external disk and repurpose it as a Time Machine backup destination, so that in case of future disasters, you will have a backup from which you can easily restore your working environment.

  • IMovie 5.0.2 freezes my computer

I'm working on a small iMovie project, 28 minutes of DV-PAL footage and I'm experiencing some serious troubles. I have to say that I've never used iMovie in the past. When I first created my project and did some first raw adjustments (cropping, trimming,...) everything worked fine, but now that I've made some audio tweaks, transitions and added 3 soundtrack,s things don't work anymore. When I try to play/preview the project, audio starts stuttering, frames are very slow and then the beach ball appears freezing the computer. I'm not even able to access other applications, the mouse becomes impossible to use and only choice is a forced shutdown. I've tried to repair disk permissions, remove iMovie preference and cache files but to no avail. What can I do???? Someone has experienced this??? The project is almost complete but I can't really finish it. Specs of my setup are below, HD has more than 25 GB of free space.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
thanks for trying to help. Among your suggestions I already tried most of them. Here are my answers to your comments.
"25Gb free space - on internal (start-up) hard disc ?"
It's 19 GB on internal HD and 25 Gb on an external FW drive. I've tried the project on both but it didn't make much difference.
"If so I would start a new account and try from here - if it runns smothly that the problem is
most probably in the iMovie pref files that has to be deleted so that iMovie can make new fresh ones."
I have already removed iMovie cache and preference files.
    "• Hard disc is untidy:
Repair Permissions (Apple Disc Util tool)
Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool), You'll need to start from DVD or external hard disc"
Of course it was the first thing I did. I also checked both HD with Genius Drive.
"• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK"
    No, no third party-plug ins.
"• Several audio clips eg 50 to hundreds or more"
Nearly 45 video clips. I've splitted audio from nearly 30 clips and added two soundtracks. To be honest I think troubles began as soon as I started working on the audio. Full project size is 9.8 GB. The media folder contains 158 items. Have I exaggerated? I have never used iMovie in the past so I'm not sure about its limits. If so what can I do to fix the project without restarting from scratch?
    "• Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.10 AND QuickTime 7.2 - is OK"
    OS X 10.4.10, iMovie 5.0.2, QT 7.1.5
    Thanks again.

  • IChat AV freezes entire computer

My husband's iChat crashes often and freezes the computer--he cannot force quit the application, the colored ball spins and spins and he must do a hard reset of his G4 Cube with lots of memory, running Tiger.
It crashes many of the times (but not every time) when he tries to do a video or an audio chat, There is no problem with written IMs.
Once in a while, he can hear me but his microphone shows him that it's not on and it won't go on, and of course, I cannot hear him.
Here is the log from this morning. I had him copy it immediately following his two consecutive freezes, one when he tried to AudioChat with me,(when I accepted, his machine froze) and one when I saw him back on line after that failed and I then tried to initiate an audio chat with him. When he accepted, he froze again. He emailed me this log.

Why would you assume the battery is bad...
I have four reasons, although I did not "assume the battery is bad". I only asked how long since it had been replaced.
    (a) Because I did not know from your initial post that you were such an experienced user who could spot such problems.
    (b) Because the Mac Cube is an old enough model to make a weak battery a possibility if it had not been replaced recently.
    (c) Because the Performa PPC that I owned at the time the beautiful Cube was introduced
    b twice
gave me strange problems (other than date and time) that required battery replacement to correct.
    (d) Until your second post, I did not know that all other apps were working fine.
This is a log following a hard freeze (repeatable) caused by iChat/iSight, not following a kernel panic.
With that information, my first recommendation is
    b still
    a Safe Boot.
Then, and after again doing any other required maintenance, Apple's Isolating issues in Mac OS X Technical Support Article may be of help in tracking down what needs to be reinstalled.
