I-tunes store error - an  unknown error occurred (-50)

Everytime i go on itunes and try to log into the itunes store, I type my username and password into the relevant boxes and click ok and then
get this error: "could not complete your itunes store request. an unknown error occurred (-50)". Itunes is connecting to the internet as its updating the advertisements but it comes up with the error as soon as I click "log in" almost as if it cant connect to the internet.
as I click "log in" almost as if it cant connect to the internet.
I've tried doing everything that i can find on the net. Enabling and diasbling the parental settings, removing and re-installing itunes and quicktime seperately. I've also tried doing the command prompt things. I dont have any Web accelerators or Ad filters - I'm just using windows firewall.
I've run a diagnostics test and heres the results:

  • Can somebody help me in finding a solution or an explanation to the problem I am currently experiencing as well as others wherein we cannot connect to the iTunes store (iTunes could not connect to the store. An unknown error occurred (0x80096004))?

Can somebody help me in finding a solution or an explanation to the problem I am currently experiencing as well as others wherein we cannot connect to the iTunes store. An error message appears and either says "iTunes could not connect to the store. An unknown error occurred (0x80096004). Make sure your network connection is active and try again" or "iTunes could not connect to the store.Make sure your network connection is active and try again." Despite the fact that my network connection is working quite fine, this problem still persists. I can say that my connection is fine because I can surf the internet and furthermore, I used to connect to the iTunes store just before this incident happened which started from April 17, 2014 and persists until today. I tried to solve the problem by following the troubleshoot procedures given in the support section of this site but it really did not solve the problem. I believe that others are experiencing this situation as well very similar to mine when it comes to the time of occurrence as I have read in the discussions in this site. Even though we have different network connections, operating systems and other specifications, we still experience the same problem, so is there really a problem with our computers or is it with the iTunes? And by the way, my computer works under Windows XP. Thanks a lot. God bless.

    Try this...
Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
    cmd /k netsh winsock reset
Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.
You should get something similar to this:
Reboot the computer and the problem should be resolved.
If it doesn't work then perhaps a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes will fix things. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for details.

    Thank-you

If like me you have concluded that this is not a connectivity issue.
In my case it is a problem with Webkit2 and they way it handles SSL certificates.
To test if this is the case install Safari for windows 5.1.7(if not already installed) and try to access a secure site, like facebook or your banking, if you receive a certificate dialog box saying
"Safari can't verify the identity of the website"
If you hit "Continue" and the page loads but does not render correctly ........
Then try using another browser (IE/FF/Chrome) and see if you are able to access the site without prompts and the page renders correctly.
From Safari 4.04 onwards (as well as iTunes) it uses the windows root certificate store, to test uninstall Safari 5.1.7 and go back as far as Safar 3.2.3 (oldapps.com) and then try to access a secure site, if it renders correctly (back then Safari handled it's own certificates) you have the same problem as me
If you also look in the logs for itunes when you're accessing (attempting) the store if you find a reference to webkit2 and certificates that should further help clarify the problem. btw - don't bother with windows root certificate updates if your other browsers work ok
