I-tunes taking over DVD drive

Whenever I install or upgrade i-tunes it takes over the DVD driver so that the DVD drive does not show up on my computer. This has happened before and just uninstalling the driver in Device Manager does not work. Dell have fixed it before for me by uninstalling the driver and deleting a string in the registry and then restarting the computer. Does anyone know which string in the registry i need to remove?

Was this previously happening on Vista on the Dell?

Unable to burn CDs using i tunes. Have run diognostics.    Summary:-   i tunes not running in safe mode.

    Please help.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

According to that, you don't seem to have added in an UpperFilters entry for GEARAspiWDM.
Did you not do that (as per the instructions in the document on what to do if the UpperFilters entry is missing)?
Or did you revert the key after attempting a filter edit and still getting the error message?

  • DVD Driver corruption when upgrading i tunes

Everytime there is an upgrade for itunes my driver for my dvd drive becomes corrupted. It has happened 3 times. I have a dell inspiron 530s. They have restored my drivers by ininstalling them and removing a string from the registry and then re-booting but they have said that they won't do this again unless I pay for software support. Does anyone know which string from the registry they remove? Thanks.

  • Installed itunes for windows- ipod+dvd drives not recognized by my computer

After installing i tunes I received a message saying that there were errors during install. Importing and export (burning) would not be possible through i tunes, I should re-install itunes. I have reinstalled i tunes.
On restarting my computer i have encountered issues with drives, I cannot find the ipod in "my computer" nor can i find my dvd drive. The drivers for the dvd drive are installed.
There is possibly confusion over the drives allocated letters ie it maybe the hardware is trying to use the same designation.
Is this a common issue with installing i tunes, I can't find any other threads on similar issues. Any suggestions on fixes greatly appreciated.

ahhhhhh, many thanks for the link. for a while (about a year ago), Packard Bell UK was including those instructions on their troubleshooting pages, but then they went away. (or i just couldn't find where they'd been shifted to.)
usually nowadays i crank out the MS instructions instructions instead:
(MS) CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
... but it's a (slightly perverse) sort of comfort to know that i'm still recommending basically what Packard Bell recommends.

  • Noisy CD/DVD drive

I have a 2009 MacPro, running the latest system etc.
For quite some time my CD/DVD drive is really noisy when reading discs.
I called Apple Support, but they wouldn't send me a new drive, since it still reads.
I'm some 90 miles and a ferry ride from the closest Apple store, so taking it in is a huge hassle and lots of money.
Although I've had ongoing Bluetooth issues with the machine (over a year) and maybe I'll have to bite it and take the thing in.
They have sent techs out numorous time to try and solve the Bluetooth, it still isn't right. (it has to be turned 90 degrees to work, so the mouse is in direct 'line of sight' to the rear of the machine).
Anyway, has anyone else had really noisy drives on these and how did you solve it?

  • Do new macs not have a dvd drive

I think my emac has died.  When. I switch it on i get a blue screen with a sign in to apple but the mouse does not work.  the only way I can switch it off is by the main wall socket.  It is a 2003 running ox10.4
guess its time to bite the bullet and buy a new machine.  What to go for?  Do new macs not have dvd drives any more?

I'd like to figure this out if you can bear with me. I'm retired too so have time to research Mac stuff when I'm not taking a power nap!
There are two families of eMacs with two variants each; some have known issues. If you are up to it, please read this Apple article that lets you find your exact eMac variant by serial number:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2395
Without posting your serial number here, post what model the article says you have.
If the model returns as "eMac (USB 2.0)" that is a group with very bad logic board issues. Affected eMac USB 2.0 units tend to fall in these ranges of serial numbers:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
Your symptoms sound like it could be this model. Apple had a repair extension program to replace defective logic boards but it expired over two years ago. Today, the fix is not economically feasible.
Guess I will have to go and look at PCs.
Consider the 13-inch MacBook Pro I linked. I had a 15-incher that I bough about six years ago because I did not think anything smaller would work for my old eyeballs. However, in June I bought the 13-inch as a refurb directly from Apple for only about US$1000 and, as long as I remember to put on my computer glasses, I have no trouble with the smaller screen.
Based of the lack of issues with that model reported in the MacBook Pro forums, it seems a reliable model. My son bought one for university as a refurb. I liked it a lot so bought mine in June.  A friend who had been using 1998-vintage Powerbooks until this year liked mine so much that he bought two. You can use them like a  desktop computer. When I'm not using mine away for home, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse set up for it so it's very much like a desktop until until I hit the road.

  • I do not have a DVD Drive- !!

I recvd Photoshop Elements 10 for a bday gift.  It was purchased at Best Buy on 2/4/12.  My sister was unaware of my OS &/or hardware & told the salesman she needed a version that would open with just about anything- he assured her that this is what I needed.  I am new to Photoshop products and was VERY eager to get started (especially after taking over a 1000 pics over the wknd).
Apparently, I need a DVD drive to install this?  I've already opened the product and cannot take it back for a refund.  It was quite a "luxury" item since we do not have that kind of money to spend on computer programs.  What can I do to install & use at the very least the Photoshop part...really no need for the video part (yet anyway).
Any help would be appreciated.  Unless you suggest I get a DVD drive installed on my computer...I would have to repeat...I do not have any money for something like that.   Thank you to who ever can help me.

Don’t worry you can download the free trial directly from Adobe. It’s the same as the full product. After you successfully install the trial simply enter the serial number from the back of your DVD box and it becomes permanent.
    Get it here:

  • Time Machine taking over my external HD

Is there a way to stop Time Machine from taking over my external HD? I have a 1T for video and photos and previously used Retrospect for the backups. It doesn't do it automatically with the iMac Intel Processor (older version of Retrospect) so I thought Time Machine would be the answer (instead of upgrading Retrospect). However, I am not willing to give up my entire HD to Time Machine - I only want my documents backed up and then the changes to files backed up with the previous backup deleted. Is there any way to do this? I've already excluded all the apps, etc. and still end up with huge backups. And according to the info about Time Machine, it's going to keep taking over the HD until it is full!!! The Retrospect backups for the past 3 months are 3G for the original backup of documents and the current backup.
In 24 hours with Time Machine I already have 75G and counting!!!
Or do I just need to get a 2nd external HD with less memory and dedicate it to Time Machine?

Or do I just need to get a 2nd external HD with less memory and dedicate it to Time Machine?
Well, OP is considering this option, and it one way to go TM-dedicated TM external. Really their options depend on how much free space is present on their Mac internal and current external. Disk Utility erase/ partition options will reformat, quite obviously, but even if they have just one external available it is usually possible to backup video and other stored files to say DVD media while they reorganize/ reformat their backup drive.
Another choice is to turn TM off.
Due to the magic of shareware there are now third-party utilities that allow you to alter the frequency of Time Machine Back up.

  • Panther to Tiger using LaCie Firewire DVD drive

First, it was suggested I start a new topic, because of using an external Firewire drive. I have the proper Tiger "Retail" install disk. This is for a friends iMac that did not come with a DVD/Combo drive.
Anything anyone can suggest. I'm hoping the following will work:
    1. iMac has latest firmware, and is up to date with latest Panther.
    2. hook up LaCie external firewire DVD drive, and as long as it is recognized on the desktop of my friends iMac, that I will be able to then insert/load the Tiger Install Disk and double click on it to install Tiger onto the iMac.
    3. I additionally have the option of taking over my Intel dual-core MacBook (Leopard installed) and using that in Target Disk Mode with the Tiger disk in the combo drive of the MacBook. Will it then install on the iMac?
    4. I appreciate any and all suggestions and help. I read through numerous posts, but all the links for the Applelink article about installing using Target Disk Mode simply take me to the main page of Applelink and I can't seem to find the instructions.
    5. I'm just wondering anyone's experience in using an external Firewire DVD drive to use as the install disk for the OSX Tiger installation to an older iMac.
    thanks! Patrick.

Hi Patrick, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    1. Good.
    2. Should work if it's Mac compatable, you'll find out soon enough.
    3. Very likely.
    4. The iMac should see the MacBook's DVD as bootable when the MB is in Target Mode.
    5. It works with many FW Opticals, but a few do not support Mac Booting.
    6. Another option possibly, you can clone an image of the DVDs to a FW drive and boot from that for an install too... I've used Toast to do it, but it can be done with Disk Utility.
PS. I doubt you'll have problems with 2 ways to go there, good luck!

  • Install Tigre from FW DVD drive?

Has anyone had any luck installing by this venue?
My internal combo drive is a bit dodgy with DVDs these days; i'm thinking of borrowing an external FireWire DVD drive for this adventuresome install. Anyone done this?

    Okay, FINally.
I did it. Here are my super-idiosyncratic results. They go against just about all the expectations i had from reading recent posts... so I hope it makes for interesting reading!
Bottom line: Installing over Panther worked, without wiping the drive. There were some hitches.
First off: using XPF 4, the beige booted just fine from the Tiger disc on the FireWire DVD drive. However, I had only a PowerBook install DVD, and it didn't like my system. "This software cannot be installed on this computer. [Restart]" Pah!
I did restart, without benefit of XPF this time, and the Beige hung of course; I had to boot back to 9 to return to square 1. Square 1 in this case was my Panther system, and my lovely paid copy of XPF 4.
I certainly wasn't taking this first "no" for an answer, so I attempted to install the packages from the DVD via Charles Srtska's Pacifist, which lets you skip the main OS installer program and choose which components to install.
First, in Pacifist, I attempted to "Update Prebinding Information" on the boot volume (which is the only installable place), and this stalled out. Deciding this was probably not going to work, I re-booted and repaired permissions.
Then I decided "enough pussyfooting." In Pacifist, I went straight to "Open OS X Installation Package" and selected everything except the printer drivers and foreign language localizations on the DVD and just said "Install".
    Then it got interesting.
First of all, obviously Tiger is installing a great number of files which are identical in name to the Panther files they are replacing, and this is occurring on your present boot volume! Pacifist wants to ask you about each one of these 20,000 situations. Hesitantly, I checked "answer yes to all." Note: the beige had NOT booted from the DVD, Pacifist was just pulling the install packages from the DVD - and I'm pretty sure it was writing those files over the system files on the boot volume. Whoa! Is that even possible?
There was a Pacifist question about whether to update or replace ".app" bundles, with the risk that the apps would be unbundled into folders. I said I wanted to "update" in every such situation to maintain bundling, I think. Apparently the right choice.
There were several glitches when a "replace file" operation was refused: "...because a file cannot be replaced by a folder." One of these was an important Java folder, possibly the main Java app.; I grimaced and clicked OK each time. Several times these questions stopped the install for hours, by the way, since I was away from the computer.
However the install ran until the end. Finally, after installation and optimization, Pacifist wanted to update prebinding information on the boot disc, as I had tried to do before the installation. This operation was allowed to go for 12 hours but when I checked again, it had evidently stalled, so I force-quit Pacifist and restarted in OS 9. Fortunately I still have an OS 9 boot volume ... Then, XPF showed the option of rebooting in 10.4 on the volume where I had been doing the installation. Would it work?
Tiger booted all right. But it did not recognize my login, or my password, or my admin password, and did not let me login as root. The Tiger install DVD, being uncooperative, would not let me reset the admin password; I did finally accomplish this from the Panther install CD 1.
And then I could boot into Tiger as 'root'. In Sys Prefs: Accounts, I "created" my old two accounts again. Tiger asked if I wanted to use the same folders for these "new" accounts with the same old user names, I said yes. When I logged out of 'root' and logged in as each of these users, Tiger booted with all the old Panther prefs proper to each user. No migration necessary so far (haven't tested iphoto or itunes however).
Just now I have installed the 10.4.4 combined update, and repaired permissions with Onyx. Smooth.
After all that, I ran Software Update and - impressively - the missing Java file was noticed and reinstalled
I think it's time for me to pay for my copy of Pacifist!
I will say this: Tiger does not seem particularly faster than Panther on my machine, and it does not boot faster. I had Panther booting in half a minute, due to some stratagem posted on this forum which cuts the hardware check off during startup; I think this was achieved by force-shutting-down the startup process at some point and immediately rebooting, but I don't remember. Does anyone else?

  • Cd/dvd drive making noise

    Hi all!
I just got a brand new 20-inch Alu iMac with Leopard installed last month as an early Christmas present, my very first mac and love it. I have a couple of questions I thought I'd throw it to you experts out there.
Firstly, the cd/dvd drive is making a whirring noise, to me it sounded like a plane taking off, whenever I put in a disc. I have tried a preinstalled cd that came with my mac. I have read on the forum that some cd/dvd make noise. Should I be worried about this before my warranty expires?
Secondly, I am not sure if it is related. I tried to burn my playlist on iTunes to CD. It took multiple discs as I have a long playlist. After the first disc, I put in the next blank one. But the issue is after I finished burning the playlist and putting the cd in to test, the first cd has no info on it but the rest of the cds are okay. I have burned cds from iTunes on my old pc before and did not have any problems. Are both of these issues related? Do I need to take the mac into an Apple store and get it checked out?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Bbolin! Thanks for your response and suggestion to go to iTunes forum. I did have a look over there and there is a thread going on on this. Apparently there is a bug in the os. So, as soon as I get some more cds I will try burning at a lower speed. Thanks again for your help. Have a great 2008.
