I Tunes unable to locate music ?

I have just spent 7 hours updating our i-Tunes account. I successfully deleted the extra copies of tracks, located missing files, updated the library and then backed up the whole of i-Tunes.
I then backed up the whole I-Mac to an external drive and was busy patting myself on the back for an excellent job when I thought I would just check and see everything opened properly after a shut down. I didnt.
When i opened i-Tunes I could see all my albums, all the artwork, all the playlists, all the music files perfectly organised as I had left them.
BUT when I clicked on a tune to listen to it, i-Tunes gave me a mesage saying i-Tunes was unable to locate the music file ? I followed the link path to where the music was stored, user\music\ i-Tunes\ i-Tunes media etc and there was all the music as I had left it ??
When I clicked on any file in i-Tunes it could find it, but when I click on the media folder with the music in it opens i-Tunes up perfectly and plays my tune. I've tried emptying the whole i-Tunes library and then restoring it from i-Tunes folder but I get multiple copies of the allbums, missing artwork, missing files, some albums have one or two tunes missing and some are completely duplicated, e.g. I can see two copies of each track in the album..........I cant believe it ! why is i-Tunes so frustrating ? all I want it to be able to see one copy of each track on each album and keep it that way.
Is it something to do with my library ? is that corrupted ? should I delete the library and create a new one ? how do I do that ? How, (once I've got it back to how I want it) do I save everything and ensure it doesn't go reading something corrupt again. This is a nightmare...HELP

The exclamation mark for missing files is shown if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. Changing the path to the media folder won't fix the links to files you've moved by hand.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then say no when asked to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps and locate the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. I would suggest you untick Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organized before you start so that things don't have to move around as they are repaired.

  • ITunes unable to locate music files saved on external drive

    Hi all,
This is proabably something incredibly simple but my iTunes was installed on to my laptop wih music added till my memory was all used up.
So I bought an external drive, and re-added all my music saving it to the external drive, my iTunes however remained installed directly on my laptop.
This worked fine initially as long as my external drive was selected in the Preferences section of my Itunes, but recently all my albums are available but it says that Itunes is unable to locate the files, even though none of them have been lost or deleted from the external drive.
Ive tried everything I can think of - does anyone know how to rectify this?
    Thanks....

I switched computers and tried to reload all my backed up itunes files. It loaded the files fine the first time. After I logged off the files disappeared from my Itunes. Apple tech told me to add itunes folder to library. It worked fine until i logged off again. I tried it several times because my files never stayed on itunes. Finnaly I added two new CD's into my library and I went to file Libray and I entered consolidated Library. This brought everything I had before and then some to my itunes library. I logged off, shutdown and even hibernated and my files still remain. I was able to create playlist, my movies, podcast, there all there. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes Unable to Locate Music File

I have a few hundred songs in iTunes that have been loaded over the years. Their source is CD's and iTunes. Tonight on an airplane, I was listening and noticed that I had red circles with red squares inside of them next to song titles. When I selected these, they were not available. This happened more and more as i selected different songs, eventually I was left with just a handful of songs. Immediately when I got home, I snyched to my computer and it said that there were items unable to synch because iTunes was unable to locate the original file. (it did restore a few but still over 100+ missing files). The titles are still listed.
However, I am unable to play any song in itunes on my computer. Just on my iPhone. When i ask it to loacte it directs me to a catroot file from 2009???
I have not added or removfed songs in weeks and it has been working fine (iPhone and computer) for months.Any help in finding these files or restoring them would be appreciated.

Use the iTunes command File > Add Folder to Library, and navigate to the folder containing the music.

  • IPod says unable to locate music video question

Big time newbie here to the whole iPod thing. I bought the touch for my wife for Christmas and I'm trying to load it up with some stuff before I give it to her. I bought a music video on iTunes and when I sync and try to load it I get a message that says "unable to locate video". I look in the iTunes folder and I can see it there. I restarted the iPod and the computer and still got the same message. I can watch the video on my computer via the iTunes player. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you backed it to iTunes you should be good with all the pictures, videos, etc. and they are still here. However there isn't really any way to retrieve them without the use of 3rd party software. Sorry for your loss

  • ITunes not loading - "Unable to locate Music Folder"

    Guys,
Having huge problems - I decided to move all my iTunes purchases and music onto a portable device, changing the location path from the C:\ drive to H:\ drive. Since I carried this out - everytime I try and load iTunes I get this error message:-
"The folder "i Tunes" cannot be found or created, and is required.
The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder.
I have totally wiped the pc of iTunes, re-downloaded from iTunes website and re-installed everything but I am still having this error message appear!. I need help..............
    Leon.

Have had the same problem starting abruptly a few days ago without any new computer software or updates on a WIndows XP Media Edition computer. Troubleshooting including removing and reinstalling all Apple software did not work. Seemed to be a user - specific issue but the Apple provided trouble shooting removing preference files and plugins did not work. The same error message as above occurs.
I will try the SHIFT-OPEN iTUNES solution and see what happens. If the same error message recurs I will try to contact Apple directly.

  • Itunes unable to locate music

after much itunes drama and loosing much of my music, I finally got it all make into my itunes library by moving my finals from my ipod back to it. now I tried to sync my ipod again and it says all of the music cannot be located. any idea how i can get it back again or is it now gone for good?

The most common cause of iTunes loosing links with the songs, is moving them around in the Finder.
If you don't move songs around, repair the disk using Disk Utility. If there are errors found, that could be the cause.
To repair the startup volume, you have to run disk Utility from the first OS X install CD/DVD.

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:
HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP
HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
You may be required to boot into safe mode to complete the folder deletion process.

You need to associate your music files to iTunes instead of HP.
    Control Panel
    Programs
    Default Programs
    Set Associations
Double click on the relevant item and select iTunes from the list.

  • HT1349 I am trying to burn music to a CD - message says:  unable to locate the original file and will not burn the playlist.  Is there a setting that I must change.  ?

I am trying to burn music to a CD-R-  message says:  unable to locate the original file.   Music is on the iTunes program but will not play or burn.  Is there something I should change to be able to burn to CD?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

    Hello 16to87,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains advice on locating your iTunes library:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
If you don't see one of the screens above, you may want to try again. Remember to hold down the Option key if you're using a Mac or the Shift key if you're using Windows.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Why is my Windows 8 computer unable to locate my music files?

My itunes are in the cloud.  My ipad and iphone pull all songs from the cloud as did my old Vista computer.  My new Windows 8 computer does not recognize that my music files are in the cloud.  When attempting to play a song, a window will pop up saying " The song could not be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?" Song files were also transferred over and it is unable to locate those as well.  This is a problem for another computer user because her songs are not in the cloud.

If the media is in the cloud then it is not synced to any devices.
    It cannot be both ways.
Was the media moved from the old computer to the new computer?  Installing iTunes does not cause this to magically happen.
