I-tunes unresponsive on startup
I am having an annoying problem with I-tunes on my home PC (3.06 Pentium IV, 1 gig ram Win XP pro) and with my tablet pc (fujitsu stylistic ST4121 Mobile PIII 933 mhz, 512 mb, Win XP pro). When I start up I-tunes and sometimes when I am making playlists or importing songs, the program will become unresponsive, music will continue to play, but the window will lock up for two to twenty minutes. This happens on both machines. I'm wondering if it is doing some maintenence or is it just the size of my library (~88 gigs of music no video) Any ideas, Anyone...
Thanks
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Messages goes unresponsive on startup - anyway to fix it?
For the last week or so, Messages has gone unresponsive on startup. It beachballs if I hover over it. All I can do is force quit the app. But I can't get it to start up properly. Until last week or so I had no problems with it.
Is there a way to fix the problem? Preferably without losing my chat histories...
Thanks,
DougAfter I force quit, this is what the report looks like. Anybody have any ideas? I would love to do a screen sharing with a friend I help, but Messages just beachballs now. All .plists related to ichat and imessage have been deleted. It appears to start up ok, and I see my friends list ok, but then it just beachballs!
The error report looks like something recursive is happening, with all those indents. Here is part of it - it just repeats like that:

Trace/tune SQL Developer startup?
I am trying to tune the startup time of SQL Developer.
The best hint I found so far is disabling all extensions not needed. (in my case all the migration assistants, and the check for 'looking for updates automatically' reduced the startup time from approx. 60 sec down to 30 sec).
Still I'd like to know if (and how) I can squeeze more time out of it. To do so, I'd like to know where I spend most of the time.
Can someone hint me how I can trace the startup procedure, so I can find the most time consuming actions during startup?953600 wrote:
I am new to SQL Developer, having recently downloaded it. Could anyone please let me know what the Username and Password is for any/all the test database is ? Also what databases and tables are available for practicing SQL queries. I am new to Oracle OCA training and am completely lost with the heaps of documentation which never mentions how to access test databases. I would really apreciate any help I can get as I am doing self study and have no mentors, teachers etc. My email is [email protected] and would appreciate anyone replying with this information and any other tips. Thanks in advance.
The passwords are whatever they were set to when the database was created.
SQL Developer is just a client tool. It doesn't come with a database. It expects that you already have a database which it can connect to.
And putting your email address in a posting on a forum is A Very Bad Idea (tm). No on on the forum is going to respond to it, but a million address harvesters will sell it to spam sources. Expect to be flooded with email offers for the following
1) products to enhance the size of certain body parts
2) Nigerians who desperately need to move large sums of money and are willing to pay a total strangers for assistance.

I was using iWeb today, to update my website. After I published, and closed iWeb,
I found out I made a little mistake. I opened up iWeb again, and instead of having
it startup up normally, I got only the Metrix screen, and not iWeb. When I tried to
close the Metrix screen, I found out the application was unresponsive.
I have no idea what is causing this, and didn't install / remove anything... I tried
deleting all the files I could find from iWeb, and reinstalling, but this didn't fix
anything..
How do I fix this?See this page under "Fix iWeb" for troubleshooting...

... and this page for info about using iWeb with Mountain Lion...

System crash now Motion becomes unresponsive on startup
Had a system crash with the dark screen forcing me to hold the power button to shut it down. Now I have reopened Motion and as soon as its started up and I go to the toolbar (File Edit etc....) the program hangs. I have tried getting round this by just double clicking on a saved project to open it and instead it hangs on the Motion startup screen.
Any ideas?Just left a project opening and unresponsive without realising and then saw it open in the background behind safari a full 15 minutes after I clicked open - Its a very small project file with 3 text boxes and gradient background and an image so it's not due to it being a complicated sequence.

Entirely Unresponsive on Startup
Hi-
My Powerbook has been out of commission for about 6 months now, conveniently dying right as I bought a new Mac Pro, but I've finally worked up the motivation to try and fix it. Here's the problem: I hit the power button, and I get the startup chime... but the hard disk doesn't spin, and the Superdrive gives a feeble little effort before shutting off too. The screen remains blank, none of the lights work (caps lock, keyboard ambient lighting), and the only way to reset it to try again is take out the battery and unplug it.
I've tried using target disk mode onto the Mac Pro, but the same thing happens... black screen, no response from the keyboard. I've also considering booting from the startup disks, but there's some CD in the drive already, and nothing I've tried will get it out. Force ejecting with the keyboard or mouse doesn't work, the comp won't go into open firmware... and after fishing around with a paper clip for five minutes I couldn't find the manual eject button in the drive.
The computer is out of warrantee, the nearest Apple store is 6 hours away, and I don't really have faith in the local computer repair stores... so I turn to you guys. Two questions, pretty much: Any suggestions on getting this computer up and running? And if not, is there any way to just open up the computer and manually hook the hard disk to my Mac Pro to extract the files I want, or are they not compatible? To be honest, all I really want is my old stuff... getting the Powerbook to work would just be icing on the cake.
-piglickerI actually ended up breaking down and taking the computer to one of the certified local service stores, and had a very pleasant experience with the staff there. My problems appears to be a bad logic board or a bad hard drive.

MBP battery won't charge, osx unresponsive after startup
I'm baffled by this. October 26th I received and installed Leopard. No problems occurred during install and any time afterwards until now (besides minor glitches that come with early adoption).
Yesterday evening I let my batter drain to around 15% before going to bed, and didn't plug it in overnight. Usually when I do this, the battery is dead in the morning and I have to plug in my power adapter to start the computer. This morning was no different.
What I didn't notice was that my Battery wasn't charging all day even though my mbp was plugged in. When I unplugged it to go to a meeting, it shut off, which is when I realized it hadn't been charging (even though the adaptor plug showed a green light). I was able to plug in the laptop in the meeting, but it still wouldn't charge.
Now, I'm at home trying to boot my computer (plugged in), but after the startup screen (apple and spinner), it flashes the light blue and immediately goes black. Pressing any keys gives the warning beep sound of an invalid keystroke.
I've Tried booting several times, taken out the battery and checked all the connection points, I've even reset the SMC. If ANYONE is having this issue or has a solution, please assist! Thank you.Okay, I've reset the SMC (as I already stated) which didn't fix the problem. I then reset the PRAM which DID fix the problem. My computer booted right up and I haven't had any issues so far. However, my batter does not seem to be recharging still. I know there are multiple posts about that so I will defer to those. I hope this helps

My Macbook pro suddenly running very slow
I have a 13" mid 2012 Macbook pro running OS X Mavericks v 10.9.4. About two weeks ago it suddenly became very slow and unresponsive. Startup and shut down takes much longer than usual, file transfers are slow and apps are taking forever to launch. The rainbow wheel would show up almost anytime and trivial tasks like opening a new tab in browser or opening finder. More recently, a new problem has also cropped up: my mac is not going to sleep on closing the lid.
Over last two weeks I have tried the following:
- Repair disk and disk permissions.
- Reset SMC
- Reset PRAM
- Start in safe mode.
- Clean install of OS X (after erasing the hard drive).
but none of this has helped. I also ran Apple Hardware Test but got nothing. I fear my hard drive may be failing. Is there anything else I can try before I have to take it to the apple store. Any help would be sppreciated. Thanks.
Here is some information on my macbook:
MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

It sounds like you are getting some graphical anomolies after updating to Mac OS X Mavericks. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the following article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Also you can test the issue in Safe Mode, which the article references and see if the issue happens there. If not then a 3rd party login item may be causing an issue with the system:
OS X Mavericks: If you think you have incompatible login items

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

Mavericks use super high memory after upgraded from 2008 early
I suffered this pain after I upgraded from 10.7 to 10.9 on my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
Just as image shown above, I don't know what reason will cause this problem. It usually gets high with unknown operation.
I only get 4G memory. After I start 10.9, its kernel process and finder process consume almost 2/3 memory, it is so reduclous.
Is there any way I can reduse the memory usage of finder or prevent it eats memory so high ?arthur, thank you,
I do worry about it, because 4G is not enough any more for these memory monster =.=
They together eat almost 3.99 GB memory, so that Mac becomes slow and shows SBBOD a lot and not responsive for many many seconds. It slow down my daily work a lot.

Mac mini stuck at grey apple screen
I was in the process of streaming some music through itunes from a samba share when my mini locked up hard and I was forced to do a hard reboot, upon startup now the mini is always stuck at the grey apple screen.
I hear no startup sounds other then the disk firing up (no welcoming chime) and from what I've tried, the system seems unresponsive to startup options (ie. holding shift, command v etc.).
I tried the obvious and disconnected everything and tried to restart but had no luck. Has anyone else been able to revive a bricked (bricked from what?? ) mini?Hi All, I am sharing the same problem.
I have a Intel Mini, last night woke it up and clicked on itunes, the arrow swithced to the pinwheel.
Clicked on itunes and it said the "application was not responding" tried to force quit and nothing happened except for the pin wheel, I was able to get the computer to restart, well that process froze up too.
I did a hard reboot and the gray screen came on with no dark grey apple. Shut it down from behind the mini, went on with other thing, came back turned it on from behind again, this time I got the grey apple and grey pin wheel but it didnt go any further.
I checked out this post, restarted the computer while holding down the "C" key with the leapord disk.
Went in to disk utility clicked repair disk, message said the disk couldnt be verified/repaired. I then went to the sartup menu and shut down.
Any idea someone could tell me what to do next? -
Stuck on " None of your preferred networks are available"
Good afternoon everyone,
When I turn on my MacBook Pro computer (both regularly and in safe mode) searches for the Wifi and then the screen, "None of your preferred networks are available" comes-up and gets stuck. I am unable to use my track pad to get out of it, the esc key does not work, nor the control/command Q...
Any advice would be appreciated. I have an appointment for the "Genius bar" in a couple days, but if I am able to figure this out earlier, it would, of course be better.
All the best,
DaveHi dchiesa,
If your MacBook Pro is freezing or becoming unresponsive during startup, even when Safe Booting, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?
Thanks! Any input is welcome. Is this the same problem? Verical Lines" seems a bit diffuse. I've seached for a similar question and found a lot of other types of lines and stripes.
Could this be a solution?
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3824?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If so, how do I install the update if I can't get passed the blue screen? Can I start my Imac in safe mode? How?
iMac (Mid 2011): Unresponsive white screen on startup or vertical lines on screen
Symptoms
In certain circumstances, your iMac (Mid 2011) may become unresponsive on startup, with a white or gray background on the display. You may also notice vertical lines on the display while using your iMac.
Resolution
Install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0 if your computer exhibits these issues. To install the update, chooseSoftware Update from the Apple () menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
Important: Do not interrupt the power to the computer while the update is installing. After the update is finished installing, you will need to restart your iMac. -
To re-install or not, that is the question?
I have an early 2006 intel iMac with OSX 10.4.11. Little things are starting to act up, but nothing really major. IChat doesn't work properly, I lose tunes in iTunes, startup sound went on the fritz and the little beacon on the front right hand side is getting dimmer. I used to have an old Mac Powerbook 180 (1993) and periodically, I'd re-install the system from all of the floppy discs and it would work perfectly and I'd never lose any data. Sometimes, I wish I still had it. Is it a totally different world now? Can I take the start up CD that came with the iMac, place it in the slot and do a total re-install? What would happen and is this a plausible idea? Or,,, should I just leave well enough alone? I feel like I just need to do a clean up of the system. Thanks!!!
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Tomcat slowing down - configuration issue?
Under the current configuration, I add new Contexts to Tomcat for each of my customers. I will be adding new customers in the future (how many, I don't know but I have 13 now).
Each customer has their own Context with environment entries and data sources that I use to determine which database to use and where to store uploaded files and such.
I know that it will slow Tomcat down the way I'm currently doing it as it already has.
What would be a better way to handle this with minimum effort if at all possible?
What about connections to the mySQL database? How would your suggestion method effect it?
If this is the wrong forum, can you direct me to the right one for this type of issue? You might want to fine tune the java startup parameters
especially -Xms and -XMx. Please see the tools documentation.
