i unchecked the ask first before compacting, now it takes 20 to 30 secounds to delete each messages i want to turn the ask first feature back on, I hate the thunderbird email when any button is pushed for whatever feature the software goes haywire, plus when using a virus protection is also goes haywire what is up

Compacting occurs when a set amount of disk space is recovered. The only way that could occur on every delete is if you have the threshold and your message size set the same
Tools menu (alt+T) > options > Advanced > disk space and set the limit to 100Mb and compacting should happen very rarely
If things go haywire every time you change a setting like your describing, you have far more serious issues than you are seeing. I change setting almost daily to replicate what people here tell me is happening. Usually I can not replicate their problem, let alone make things go haywire.
If I can untangle User Agent strings, It look like your using windows 7 with internet explorer and no anti virus. You provably need to remove a virus or two before anything will work correctly.
