I updated and now safari just wont start!

so heres the deal:
ibook 1ghz 14", 512 ram, 30gb, X 10.3.9.
So I updated to the latest security update, and now safari wont start - the icon just bounces once in the dok and dissapears.
I tried resetting the application bit using the chmod command, but to no avail.
So i redownloaded the 1.2 update, with no sucess.
I deleted safari (doh!) and tried to install from safari 1.0, but apparently that is not possible to install under my version of os x.
Im really reaching the end of my tether now - all my bookmarks etc are in safari - and whilst I can use the other multitude of browsers on my system Id rather be on safari (excuse the pun).
Please please please help me!!!
Edit: Just tried to use software update, and that wont launch either :S
Edit: just found a related article after looking around the boards - please forgive me for not looking hard enough initially.
And for anyone having the same problem, check out: Saxman, "Post Security Update: NO Safari, Mail, Sftw Update, ...", 02:24am Aug 17, 2005 CDT
Edit: Well I tried the steps outlined in the above link - with no luck.
So I guess im still stuck & on checking them Im afraid to say that many of my apps wont launch, mail, safari, limewire, Software update to name but a few...
any thoughts?
Edit: Well I guess I just didnt pay enough attention to the advice in the post linked above.
Where the instruction tells you to remove the webkit from within the system folder's library I was actually removing it from the global library on the root of the hard drive! :P
Ah well, all is fixed now - and infact my ibook seems to be running faster, and safari is definately running faster now
Tally Ho!

It's not only Safari, it's every programm! The function is called "Resume" and will launch back the applications in the same way as you leaved them.
You can change it back in
System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer

as listed in the title, my phone just flashes on me no start up just flashes from the apple logo to shutting off and back and forth i did the update this afternoon (9-26-2012) and it still wont start up!!!

Something in your backup may be corrupt. Try wiping it and setting it up as a new device, then sync your apps, data and media back to it from iTunes. DO NOT resotre from your backup. If the problem is contained in the backup, it will bring it right back again if you restore.

  • Downloaded Safari Update and Now Safari Won't Open

This past Sunday I was informed that I needed to download an update for Safari. I did this (during a major thunderstorm, but never lost power) and everything seemed to go through properly and worked normally. I restarted my computer when it prompted me to do so. A couple hours later I tried to get on the internet and nothing happened. The icon bounced a couple times and Safari's name popped up at the top of my computer next to the apple icon, but no window opened. I tried to hit open new window and so on....when I got frustrated and quit Safari it told me me that I had like 7 windows open and did I still want to quit. I clicked yes and then another window popped up stating that Safari encountered a problem and needed to close unexpectedly. I reported it to apple like 12 times. When I called apple they expected me to pay for them to fix it, even though his explanation was "This version of Safari is probably not compatible with Tiger". The other issue is that my disc drive went bad a couple years ago and I never fixed it, so I could not re-install the original Safari. Can anyone help me fix my internet without having to pay a computer store??

    HI,
If the optical disk is broken, then you can't use your install disk to repair the startup disk if necessary.
    Try booting in Safe Mode
It takes a little longer then a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    Click Verify.
At least this way you will know if there are problems with your startup disk before trying to troubleshoot Safari.
When you are finished click the Apple Menu / Restart.
Also I was able to delete my cache and now I can make an attempt to open a new tab, but then it immediately closes and gives me the unexpectedly had to quit message this time with a new number at the end of that KERN blah blah blah one and that number if it helps is 0x0000000c
If the startup disk is ok, post a crash report.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • Software update and now Safari and Mail open and then close immediately

We installed the latest 8-1 software updates on our G4 and Cube.
Now Safari and Mail open and then immediately quit on the Cube - but no peroblems are experienced on the G4.
Do I need to reinstall Tiger and start over?

A couple of things to try before taking those drastic measures.
    1. Repair permissions, restart.
    2. Boot with the install disk, launch Disk Utility, and verify/repair the disk.
    3. Boot into safe mode and see if it works there.
    4. Reinstall the 10.4.7 COMBO update, restart, repair permissions, and restart.
If those don't work, consider Archive & Install rather than an Erase & Install. See http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/ for details.

  • Installed the latest update and now Finder refuses to start/crashes

    Hey guys,
I just installed the latest 10.4.11 update or whatever, along with Quicktime, iTunes, etc., and now when I log in to any account, Finder refuses to start. If it does start, it crashes.
I've googled around and all I could find was that I should switch from one Admin account to another to stop it, but that looked outdated and didn't work anyway.
I'm on a PowerBook G4, 10.4.11. Hopefully someone can tell me how to fix this soon.

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Actually, I take double posting to mean you started the same Topic in two different placesat once!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • ITunes updated and now it won't start

I updated iTunes a few days ago, and now I can't get it to start. When I click the quicklink on my desktop or in the home menu, it says the file it links to (itunes.exe) has been moved or altered, and it tries to remove the quicklink (I said yes once, the second time it tried to deinstall when I clicked yes so I cancelled) I cannot find the actual program anywhere on my pc... (the folder is in my ProgramFiles, but the program itself isn't there)
This has been happening every time I try to start iTunes. When I connect my iPod, nothing at all happens (well, it loads, but nothing on my PC). The PC has been restarted, etc. I have NOT yet tried to deinstall and reinstall my iTunes, because it took me hours and hours to upload all my CD's (I'm old school, prefer to have the disks).
Has anyone else encountered the same problem? And if so, how did you solve it?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes in order to get it working again. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Mountain Lion update, and now computer won't start up?

Writing this for a friend, as his computer is inop at the moment.  Hence this message.
He has a new 27" iMac.  He upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, and then had intermittent problems with apps unexpectantly shutting down.
Now he did a ML update this morning, and his computer won't start up.  It gets to the point of the Apple logo coming up, a progress bar, and then the spinning wheel, but then shuts itself down right afterwards.
A safe boot yields the exact same result.
Any thoughts out there on what he could try to get it up and running again?
Thanks much for any and all help.

Thank you for the fast response.
He was able to get into Disk Utility with the Command and R keys, but when he tried verifying the disk, in red it said 'Invalid Node Structure, volume could not be verified completely'.
He went ahead and verified it anyway, then proceeded to repair it.  Howver, it stopped repairing, said it cannot repair, and that he should back up files and reformat the disk.
How can he back up his files?  He cannot see a way to do it.  Is there anything else he can do besides having to reformat the disk?
This is his first Mac (after much prompting from me to go Mac), and he's afraid he's now lost everything on there.

  • I did the new software update and now my phone wont work at all and keeps saying it needs to be restored from back up

I had my phone plugged in to my iTunes yesterday and downloaded the new software. I then went to install the new software and it crashed half way through with an error message. Then it went off completely and wiped everything. I tried to restore from back up and now it says it has restored from yesterdays back up, restarts afterwards and says it needs to restore from back up again. and just goes round and round doing that. Even if i try an earlier back up. I also tried wiping everything back to factory settings and restoring from back up and that did the same as above. Please help!!

Something in your backup may be corrupt. Try wiping it and setting it up as a new device, then sync your apps, data and media back to it from iTunes. DO NOT resotre from your backup. If the problem is contained in the backup, it will bring it right back again if you restore.

  • Freezing, display issues, and now... wont start up in OSX

Increasingly becoming an object i'd like to throw out the window, my mac book pro has now added a new trick to it's bag. originally, it was just doing silly things to the screen: when i scroll on web pages the page would move and some of the text would stay put, an issue resolved by clicking off said page, then back on to the page. then it took to freezing on me. then it took to freezing multiple times, sometimes before i could even log in on my user acct. once, it froze 5 times in a row. as if this werent annoying enough...
the other day i decided to play a game on the windows side of my partitioned hard drive. the windows side runs amazingly: no freezing, no fragmentation, no issues at all! when i was done i shut down and restarted, expecting OSX to boot. i got the grey page, the cog/wheel thing, then... about 5 minutes later it just shut off. on it's own. i tried several times, no joy. i'm plugged in to a reliable power source, and yes, the plug IS plugged in. so none of that. idk what the problem is. but it's not working, and i need to write a paper. i'm currently on my windows side, and without any kind of word processing program i will find a hard time doing my homework...
    oh, also
one time i started up in OSX, and instead of the cog, it was a globe. anyone seen that before? it only happened once.

Do you have your install discs? If so, try booting up from your install disc and navigate to Disk Utility on the install disc. You should be able to see your OS X partition. Click on it and go to the First Aid tab. Repair both permissions and the disc until there is nothing left to repair. If you get errors you can't repair with Disk Utility, post back. Also check on the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom.
It may be that your OS X partition has become corrupted. If you still can't boot up after repairing permissions and the disk, try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
The first article will tell you how to start up in Safe Mode. Note that it can take a long time to boot up this way. The second article will explain about Safe Boot and Safe Mode.
If you have more questions, please post back.
    Good luck!

You could try the new Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.
More information in this article: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]].
If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back to your current folder, if you like, using Firefox's Profile Manager. (See [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]] -- don't delete anything just yet; use this dialog to switch back and forth as needed.)
Does it work better after a reset?

  • I upgraded from OS X 10.6 to mountain lion and now my computer wont start up any program, I upgraded from OS X 10.6 to mountain lion and now my computer wont start up any program

I keep getting a message about my disc being unable to be repaired and it wont install the mountain lion or my old 10.6.  Any suggestions??

Your HD may be damaged, simply restart in the Recovery Patition (hold down Option key on start up tone and choose Recovery) then open Disk Utility, choose the internal HD and run Repair Disk, if any errors appear after the 2nd or third pass your HD is probably damaged and needs to be repaired.
