I updated from Mavericks to OS X Yosemite without backup

Hello,
First , i have a
iMac (24-inch Mid 2007)
Processor 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Storage Capacity 32.23 GB free of 319.21 GB
I haven't try any temporary fixes  other than restart and download again.
Problem: I update from Mavericks to SO Yosemite without back-up. Everything is great but now iPhoto will not open even after I downloaded the iPhoto Library Upgraded available from Apple.
Question: Anyone else having the same problem and if so how do i fix this?
Problem: I have an external hard drive of 500 GB for my Time Machine but afraid to use it because it might delete my previous work  and photo.
Question: How can i recover my photos?
Thanks,
Eric

I have a 2008 iMac and a 2008 MacBook Pro and had the same issue with iPhoto after installing Yosemite.
I downloaded the latest iPhoto and then got the message to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader which I did. After that I opened the new iPhoto and it upgraded all my pics.
Are you sure you have the latest iPhoto - available free from the App Store?

  • Problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Hello everyone.I have noticed some battery problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite like no charging at all (but the orange led was on )and not able to fully charged.I solve them with SMC reset and PRAM reset.Furthermore, battery discharges faster than before and its really annoying. Now I have notice that the upper right corner of my mac is getting hot.I'll appreciate any help
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

  • HT203177 I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

No. TM has to look through your entire drive contents and copy them all. This will take some time.
Once the first backup is made, then subsequent backup will be much quicker, depending on how much data has changed since the last one.

  • Updating from 10.7.5 to Yosemite, need Aperture upgrade

I would like to update to Yosemite, but I see that Aperture 3.4.5  will not run on Yosemite.
I just checked and there are no SW updates for my machine.  Do I have to update to Yosemite first, then hope that I can update to
the latest level of Aperture?  (I've seen other threads where people have problems updating Aperture)
If I go into the App store, Aperture is not listed as a purchase, nor does it have an available update.
I would prefer to update to the latest level of Aperture before installing Yosemite to make sure it works, but I'm not sure how to get that upgrade?
    OS 10.7.5
    Aperture 3.4.5
iMAC 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 24 GB memory

I pleaded w/ them give me the upgrade to 3.6 - they said Apple is not doing that for anyone.  So if I want to continue to be able to access my photos in Aperture after I update to their latest OS, I have to pay the $79.
For many of has the update from iPhoto 3.4.5 to 3.5.1 automatic, even for Aperture 3 versions, that have been bought on disks.  The update from aperture 3.4.5 to Aperture 3.6 is a minor compatibility Update and not a major new release. It should be free.
Apple sent redeem codes for Aperture 3.6 to several users who had bought the version on disks, if they could provide a serial number.  See for example this discussion: (The post marked as the solution) Re: Aperture update not possible after update to Yosemite
It is really unfortunate you missed the window of opportunity with Mavericks MacOS X 10.9.5.
Check, if Aperture is showing on the Purchases tab of the App Store, when you sign in with your AppleID. If there is an "Accept" button, accept it.

how do I update from ios 10.8 to yosemite

Make a cloned backup of your current system should you want to go back or if the upgrade isn't successful.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Can't update to Mavericks, says my hard drive is backup

When trying to update to Mavericks, the system won't do it and only says that the selected drive is used for time machine backups. This is my hard drive, and I don't use it for time machine backups.

You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive, and this is the folder used by Time Machine to create backups. Because of that, the OS X Mavericks installer thinks your hard drive is being used by Time Machine.
To fix this, you need to remove the folder:
    1. Open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
    2. Delete "Backups.backupdb", and if there was nothing in it, empty the Trash.
    3. Run the Mavericks installer and follow the steps

  • IPhoto update from Mavericks deleted my library. How can I get my pictures back?

Soo my iPhoto just decided not to find my photo library anymore.
When I open iPhoto, it only opens a windwo where I can decide which library I want to open, but gives me no choices, the list is empty. Normally this window opens when my external HD is connected to my macbook since then there's two iPhotos available, but now it just doesnt find even one.
I had another problem with the iPhoto on my external HD, i wanted to open it but a window opened to tell me that my library is used by another programm or that the library can't be read anymore. I was able to save those pictures by showing the contents and copying the pictures.
Buuuut now on the macbook, when I do the left click thing to open the contents of the package, there are no pictures in it at all, no folder has pictures in it. When I copy the version from time machine, nothing changes. iPhoto has a size of 1.7 Gb, which is way to small. God dammit.
How can I get my pictures back?

    Thank you Terence!
    Okay, so here the details:
    iPhoto Version 9.5.1
    OS X Version 10.9.1
So here what I did, detailed. (pardon my english, I'm swiss)
I downloaded Mavericks, few days later updated iPhoto (the iPhoto icon was orange before and turned blue after the update). All went well, until one month later, all of a sudden, I was not able to open my iPhoto on the external harddisk. A window opened to tell me that either my library is being used by another programm or that it can't be read anymore. To solve this problem iPhoto tells me to do several things, for example shut down the computer and then open iPhoto again, or set up my library again or open iPhoto by pressing command and alt. But non of those instructions helped. So I opened the contents, I looked for the folder with the masters of my pictures and copied the whole thing onto another harddisk.
I think I got those Pics saved, but I still can't open iPhoto on the external harddisk.
Oh and by the way, the iPhoto icon on my external harddisk looks different now, it's three pictures in a row and the one on top shows a redish flower.
So now, two days later I try to open the iPhoto on my regular macbook. A window pops up and says that I have to choose a library that I want to open. (iPhoto usually did that when I had my external harddisk connected since there were two different librarys then, one on my external, one on my computer) But now, instead of showing me the library's I can choose from it only shows nothing, no list or anything i could even choose. And then below there's this button that says something like "create a new library".
    So what I did:
I open the contents and looked for the masters of my pictures, but there weren't any pictures at all. The iPhoto has a size of 1.7 GB which I think is too small for all the Pics and videos i stored in there.
I tried to get the IPhoto from Time Machine, but nothing changed. Iphoto still's 1.7 GB.
I opened the file "Pictures" in the Finder, but there's no such file like "iPhoto library", like it's deleted or something like that.
So i think that I used iPhoto usually, nothing speciall. I imported Pictures from my iPhone or camera and left them there.
    Does that help?

  • Switching From Mavericks Back To Mountain Lion (Without an Optical Drive)

So I normally am not one to post to a group asking for help (blame it on the mid-20's stubbornness), however I seem to have run into an encounter that I cannot exactly find via Google or through clever sleuthing. I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro which I upgraded to Mavericks back in the early Spring. I currently would like to try to revert back to Mountain Lion or even possibily Lion, however my predicament is that I have unfortunately never ran a Time Machine backup (don't own an external) and my optical drive in the past couple of months has finally kicked the bucket. Since I'm unable to use the install cds to do a clean wipe and fresh install off of those, would anyone have a recommendation of what else I could do? Thank you so much and have a wonderful day.

You can only install Snow Leopard from an installer DVD. You can purchase one from the online Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
Alternatively, you could relate what problems you have with Mavericks. Perhaps we can help with those.

  • HT4972 Updating from iOS4 to iOS5 or later without newest version of iTunes

I can't download the newest version of iTunes (my computer is work-issued, I don't have an administrator password), but I would like to update my iPhone from iOS4 to iOS5. Is there a way I can do this without updating iTunes?

You can not upgrade to iOS 5 at all. Only to iOS 6. Over the air updates can only be done when iOS 5 or higher is installed.
Even if you find a way to update to iOS 6 using another computer, you will not be able to sync with your work computer any more.
Side note. Syncing your personal information to a company owned machine may not be wise. If the phone is not company issued/owned, you really should be syncing it with your personal computer.

Updated from Mavericks to Yosemite, which made my current Aperture 3.5 unavailable, I went to the App Store, went to "Purchased" to update to 3.6 found Aperture and clicked update. I get a small spinning thing on the upper left, but there is no activity, I get a little spinner but it stops and looking at what is being downloaded I see very little activity from the app store.

  • Will I need to update from Mountain Lion (10.8.4) to Mavericks prior to the Yosemite rollout this fall?

I am running Mountain Lion (10.8.4) currently. I rolled back to Mountain Lion from Mavericks back in October 2013 because I was having problems with it. However, I've heard there are improvements to Maverick since my initial install. My question is will I need to update from Mountain Lion to Maverick in order to update to Yosemite this fall? Thanks in advance.

If your goal is to install Yosemite upon its release, I doubt you will need to do it from Mavericks.
If Mountain Lion does not have features you need and Yosemite will, then, as WZZZ suggest, give Yosemite a chance to have any bugs worked out first.
If your concern is security, Mavericks is the current OS but Apple is still providing Security Updates for Lion, so Mountain Lion should still be good to go for a while yet.
