I updated to Mountain Lion. I noticed 2 problems I would like to resolve. I can no longer get iCloud or Security

Since updating to Mountain Lion I cannot LOAD iCloud or Security & Privacy. It just says ..."Loadind iCloud or Security & Privacy". Then I have to kill the process in Activity Monitor since it taks 99%+ of cpu. How can I get iCloud and Security & Privacy to load?

I tried the part about logon as ROOT and rename the Preferences file and logon as normal but that did not correct my problem.

I just updated to Mountain Lion and now I notice on the side bar under "shared" an icon of a computer. It states that it is a memory card.  What is this? I can't seem to open it. FYI: my wifi router is password protected.  Thank you!

Do you have a printer that has a memory card slot on it?

  • Has anyone else noticed since the last update to mountain lion, if you pit it to sleep, when it wakes there is no sound. you have to reboot to get sound?

I have found, in the past few days, since the latest update to Mountain Lion, if the Mac is put to sleep, there is no sound available when it wakes. I have to re-start to get sound back. Is this general??

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • HT1338 since updating to mountain lion i have noticed a considerable decrease in the performance  of my iMac - most notably when loading pages on the internet.  Is this common and is there a fix?

Since updating to mountain Lion, it's like being back in the 80's taking 30 seconds to load a page?  Is this common or are there any ideas?  I've checked my router and my ISP are all in order.  Whilst the mac is wired to the router, everything else in the house is running fine off the wifi network.  I am not very technically minded so any help is appreciated.

Which model and version of iMac do you have, AND more importantly, How many GB's of RAM do you have?  Mountain Lion has shown itself to be very memory intensive in operation and the bare minimum amount of RAM to achieve any system speed is 4 GB's, according to other Forum users' experience, and mine.  And more RAM than that speeds it up more.
    Hope this helps

  • Updates from Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 on my iMac Intel Core i7 are giving me problems.

I recently updated my Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 on my iMac Intel Core i7. Now I am experiencing all sorts of problems.
    1. It won't recognize my phone: Under the last OS I used to just plug in my phone and it would automatically recognize it and give me a desk icon. Now, nothing. I am forced to use bluetooth, which is so time consuming, to off load my photos. I even tried lauching iPhoto first and then plugging in my smart phone, and it would not recognize it.
    2. Clicking on files or folders on the desktop acts as if I have the shift or command key engaged and highlights all the ones I clicked on, instead of just releasing the last file I clicked on when I click on the next file.
    3. My mouse keeps disappearing all of a sudden. So I have to keep moving my mouse around until the cursor finally becomes visable.
    4. Some applications, when clicked on in the dock, open a new window as if the computer has lost the path as where to find the original except I don't get an error message saying the alias needs to be fixed. It just opens Applications.
These are the most annoying things that are happening since I have upgraded my iMac. Number 1 is the most important thing now as my videos are taking hours to off load.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eric... I restarted my iMac in Safe Mode. It gave me the option of Me or Guest. I chose Me. It started up. I ran Disk Utility and I noticed that the repairs of permissions were focused on my scanner and printer. Nothing else. Restarted. Noticed that the mouse issue is fixed. Yay! Folder issue is fixed. Yay! Application/path finding also seems to be back to normal. Yay!
My Smartphone will still not mount. Disk Utility did not recognize the phone. Going into About This Mac showed me that it can recognize the phone via Bluetooth. Under About This Mac>Hardware>USB, it also sees the phone. So why is it not mounting like before? Or what is the next step? I read those articles you attached in your initial response.

  • Error code 104 while installing updates to mountain lion?

I am trying to perform the latest update of mountain lion, which consists of an iMovie and Java update, and I am recieving an error notice (104), saying that another update is already taking place. Oddly enough, when I went to add/remove programs in my Windows XP Parallels virtual machine, trying to remove a program results in a similar error notice. Does anyone else have this problem or know what's going on?

Exact same thing happened to my 3g. Ive tried reinstalling itunes, downgrading both itunes and iphone software and nothing has worked. My phone is useless now from taking an update. Perfect.

  • Help!if i don`t update the lion ,is to say i can`t update the mountain lion?right?

Now, I don`t update the Lion ,but I want to update the Mountain Lion .Is to say I must first to update my mac to Lion, then I can update to Mountain Lion?right??//   please give me a help thanks!

No App Store, no spaces, no Time Machine, etc. etc.
As I said, no technolgical advance, no compelling reason to use it. Time Machine is not at all what Apple once promoted it as, since they dropped it in Lion.
And as far as Lion goes, a few that could not adjust their habits to a few interface changes went back to SL, which is still two OSs ahead of you.
This has nothing to do with people not being able to adjust their habits; it has everything to do with productivity, loss of features, and introduction of a new, confusing set of behaviors.
I don't know where you get your numbers from, I would like to see you back up your claim of 'so many people' as 6 million copies were downloaded in the first week alone
I didn't cite any numbers, so wondering where I got them is pointless. Reciting a claim that over 6 million copies of Lion were downloaded in the first week proves nothing.
Judging by the number of people on the forums who are not at all happy with Lion and asking how to downgrade is evidence of user dissatisfaction. Most people who are dissatisfied will not say anything at all, resigning themselves to being required to use it, thus making them unhappy customers and less likely to purchase another Mac or any other Apple device in the future.
Yet you seem to claim that 10.4.11 is where people should stop?
I didn't say or imply anything of the sort. I said that there's no good reason to upgrade just because it's shiny and new. Mac OS X has become bloated with "features" that have little or no practical value, and are seldom used, while at the same time breaking long-established features for no good reason, and having no replacement in place. At the same time, features that worked perfectly well in 10.4.11 and before were deliberately removed from later versions, without prior notice and never restored, along with bugs being introduced that also have never been fixed.
That's not my definition of progress, and I'd wager millions of others share that viewpoint.

  • Are there no security updates for Mountain Lion?

I was just downloading updates for my wife's 2008 white MacBook and noticed that a Security Update was in the mix.  The MacBook is running Lion.  While I was doing that I checked my Mac Mini for updates to Mountain Lion.  Got notified of 10.8.5 update but no Security Update.  Come to think of it, I don't remember ever being notified of a required Security Update for the Mini.  Are they just buried in with other OSX system updates and too routine to mention?  Just curious.

Non-critical security updates for Mac OS X 10.8 are part of the regular OS updates.

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

i just bought a new Mac, and i cant seem to update to Mountain Lion, any idea's as to why? also i can not seem to download pages from the app store, any idea's on why, please help!!

You need to describe more clearly what you are trying to do and how it is failing.
Was your mac new, or just new to you? What OS did it come with? Lion? Snow Leopard?
Have you already bought Mountain Lion? If so, are you using the same Apple ID that you used for your purchase?
What are you seeing in the App Store? Come to think of it, are in the MAC App Store? (not to be confused with the iTunes App Store!).
If you give answers to these questions we may be able to help!

  • Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8

Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8.

First, repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, make a bootable backup to an external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Third, purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Be sure you meet the requirements for Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
