You can, but if you find problems, you'll know where they come from. BTW the faster memory will degrade to slower mem. speed. Also, if you'r running a 333FSB CPU. memories will run at that max.speed.

  • New MSI KT3 Ultra 2 Raid Board Install

    Hi All
    I have Just installed a new KT3 Ultra 2 Raid board and XP 2000+ CPU with 512MB Memory.
    Problem is that since I installed this new Board CPU and memory my PC has been playing up a little, Mainly Adobe Premier 6.5 . The audio that I capture will not playback off the time line, but I can hear audio from the timeline on stuff I have downloaded from the web. Also Get weird message boxes pop saying that PC Alert or Fuzzy Logic are already loaded (buggered if I can find Fuzzy logic).
    ALso CPU XP2000+ what is the operating speed of this Chip? I thought it was 1.6ghz, on boot up my PC claims it is running at only 1.2ghz.
    Am I wright in saying that I need to totally reinstall everything fro scratch including win XP?
    (sorry just put new board etc in on old install, slap wrist)

    Hi tazman,
    It's not quite obvious from your explanation, but did you just install your new mobo, CPU and RAM without reformatting your Hard Drives and reinstalling the o/s?
    If so, this is a big no-no. This can cause all sorts of headaches for you and you are lucky that your computer is able to run at all. First things first, backup all of your important data files, then reformat your entire hard drive(s) from scratch, ie fdisk to get rid of all partitions, re-establish your partitions, then format away.
    Once this is done, you can reinstall your o/s, your updates, drivers and applications, etc. Not a particularly invigorating job but necessary I'm afraid. It all comes back to the UPnP activities where the o/s and your hardware become very much intertwined. All the best and have fun,  :D
    All the best,
    Dimal.

  • MSI MS-6380E v1.0 Mobo - KT3 Ultra

    Hi
    I have updated this board with the most recent BIOS (v5.7) from MSI website.
    This update supports AMD Barton XP3000+ (FSB333) CPU (For KT3 Ultra2 Only)
    The CPU support page does not shed any light on whether the board will support
    FSB 166 but I believe it does with Thornton and Thoroughbred cores as the board
    does have the KT333 chipset.
    Could someone please confirm?
    Thanks

    Henry, please don't feel offended. This was written before I posted (remember question is will barton work):
    Me:        "No Barton because max fsb is 133mhz"
    JEWilson: "Y - but the KT3 Ultra has the KT333 chipset which will allow you to run FSB 333Mhz for RAM"
    Grayone: "Try your 3200 in it and see if it will run it at a 166fsb.  The bios may show it as an unknown processor or one with a lessor model number
                   but that should answer your question."
    You:       "Yes you can use PC2700 (333) memory, it shows that in the manual."
    So things were mixing up between fsb and ram clock, I know you were correctly refering to ram speed but in this context it seemed if ram has something to do with fsb.

    Setting the multiplier to 9 or above: no problem.
    My CPU is an Athlon 1400 and its L1 bridges are "factory unlocked".
    How could I fix this issue?
    Many thanks.
    Not that this may help, but years ago I had an old Pentium 2 that had its multiplier locked when going above its default, but unlocked when going below its default multiplier.  It came this way from the factory. Pretty good FSB overclocker, btw.... :]   Later I found that Intel had changed this and subsequent P2's came from the factory locked in both directions.
    Might it be that the cpu is not as "unlocked" as you've been led to believe?  Just a thought.  A way to prove this one way or the other I think would be to try it in another motherboard.
    Well, I don't think this is the same kind of issue because I used this Athlon 1400 with any multiplier on an ABIT KT7A before buying this MSI KT3.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU + All In Wonder Problem

    I've got a odd problem that is related to putting my machine into Standby.  If I do so the night before, then wake the system up in the morning I see issues that point to memory corruption or driver failure or a conflict with the VIA chipset.  Outlook Express will lock up on launch, the ATI digital VCR app will either not launch or fail to shutdown if it does.  I clean installed Windows XP, then updated it with XP SP1.  Of note is that the video card works ok with the OS supplied driver but if you install the ATI drivers (which are needed to make the TV and Digital VCR work) this stuff happens.  I have reinstalled several times so I am pretty sure this isn't just a messy config issue.  I've had bad experiences similar to this with VIA chipset mobos in the past so this doesn't surprise me.
    Anyone ever see this?  Know of a fix?

  • KT3 Ultra Deluxe Processor Upgrade Question

    I purchased a Computer, custom built by a local shop(before I got into the spyware/virus removal business and woulda possibly tried to build my own) a few years back, and it has been a great system except that now the one online game I play, Everquest, is running slow when 30+ players are on the screen.   Other friends with brand new computers experience no lag/choppyness...  The lag is only experienced with multiple players on screen.
    With some friends, we have decided that it is not my Video card or anything else in the system, but the processor that needs upgrading.
    I have :
    AMD AthlonXP 1800(1507mhz in bios i think)
    MSI KT3 Ultra Deluxe(VIA KT333 chipset based) (it has RAID, so im assuming the ARU model)
    1024mb PC2100 or PC2700 ram..(not sure how to check)
    NVidia GeforceFX5500 256mb Video
    Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy
    Maxtor 7200rpm 40gb hard drive on Raid IDEs(set as dummy IDEs, not RAID)
    Maxtor 7200rpm 80gb hard drive on Raid IDEs(set as dummy IDEs, not RAID)
    Lite on 16x DVD-Rom drive(Primary IDE master)
    Plextor 8/4/4/2/12 DVD-RW PX-708A(Secondary IDE Master)
    Originally windows98 installed by the store.
    Reformatted twice and Windows 2000 installed presently.
    a SMC $10 junk NIC that I will be replacing with a 3com cause im tired of it after 2months(my good netgear FA311 went bad)
    What I am wanting a definite answer on, is whether I can stick a 2600mhz, 333 Barton Athlon XP in this.
    I have searched the forums and most topics say yes/no... 50/50...  so im confused.
    Is it possible to put the 2600 in there...  will that even help...  on player movement/etc in the game..(a friend with a similar system and a Radeon X800 Pro 256mb sees no difference and has similar lag to me(only in large player raids with multiple players on screen))
    I am just trying to see if I can spend $100 to throw a Barton 333 2600mhz in here and I think that should help it..
    or if I have to spend $250+ to possibly get a new PS, ram, processor/mobo the works.
    So.. is it possible?
    How much work would be put into it, besides
    Turn system off, unscrew the fan/heatsink, pop the processor out
    put the new processor in.
    Put the new heatsink/fan on
    start the system?
    Or is there going to be alot of.....  BIOS work involved.

    Friend has very similar system
    1700 AthlonXP
    1gig ram
    ATI Radeon X800 256mb(a premier card I thought?   as in performance) Pro
    He experiences lag/choppiness same as me, at times with 30+ users on the screen/game.
    I had read that officially Barton was impossible, im just asking if there is anyway to put a barton on it and will it work/how much work will it end up needing.
    266mhz 2600s arent available anywhere I look....   no 266mhz is actually..
    So Im just fearing ill need to upgrade the entire motherboard too.. and may be better off getting a new barebones kit.
    Its not gradual... its just when 30 players/characters are on the screen.... especially when they move... it gets choppy, take the number down to 10... and its lag free/choppy free.
    5v and 3.3v = 245 max watts
    5v, 3.3v and 12v = 380 max watts
    115/230 Volts
    3.3=28A
    5=40A
    12=18A
    The NIC is being ordered as im typing this...   hopefully a 3com NIC will provide better power than a SMC 10$ replacement for my netgear FA311...
    It has to be either the NIC or the processor.
    The reason for this im just saying.. is my friend has sound blaster audigy, similar processor(1700), cheap nic, a MSI mobo, not sure if its Ultra3 or not... and has very similar issues to me, despite throwing $350 down on that Radeon X800 256mb Pro, supposedly the best video card you can get.
    It didnt relieve hardly any of his lag... and hes quite....   happy about it... /sarcasm

  • RAM or MOBO error? KT3-Ultra

    I have just gotten the Kt3-Ultra and have
    when first turning it on, been greeted with a 3 beep from the speaker.
    The D-Bracket LED's show that the error is a "Onbord memory module may be damaged or not installed correctly"
    The system then hangs.
    What does this mean?
    Is the RAM stuffed (DDR-PC2700)
    or is it the MOBO.
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!! X(

    I have the same problem, w/ same MOBO.  I have found that if I disconnect the power cord or turn off power strip after turning off computer, the problem is gone temporarily.  It comes back again when I turn off the computer again.  Could there be a BIOS problem, or possibly something to do with the MOBO not resetting correctly??  Please help!!!

  • KT3 Ultra 2 processor upgrade

    I currently have a kt3 ultra 2 mobo with xp 2000 and 2100 ddr, bios version 5.6 running stock clock 266 fsb. I just orderd a xp 2800 barton. Do I have to update bios to version 5.7? and if I do is live update reliable? Do I have to purchase 2700 ddr for the system to run at 333 fsb speeds? I have never flashed a bios or changed a processor so any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

  • KT3 ULTRA MEMORY UPGRADE

    I had for necessity run PC2100 memory in my KT3 Ultra. I was running 1 256m stick and just upgraded to 2 256m PC2700 sticks.  I am getting a config file missing problem and it won't boot. Is there something I need to do to reset the board for the memory? Thanks

    I was wondering what CPU you were using as I had an XP2100 till a week ago and I was using DDR 2100. I then upgraded to an XP 2600 with DDR 2700. It work fine for about 24 hours and then I decided to overclock using fuzzy logic and the machine locked up the moment I hit auto. After rebooting the machine wouldn't load windows and I noticed that I was getting a page fault so I decided to try putting the old memory back in and it works fine. The DDR 2700 does not seem to be faulty as it works fine in my brothers system. The other odd thing is that the DDR 2100 is now running at 333Mhz without any problems. Any idea as to why DDR 2700 won't work and DDR 2100 does?

  • KT3 ultra.. adding a new HDrive ?

    Have a KT3 ultra.. has worked flawlessly :-) So far.
    Currently have an old WD ata 33 HD installed (only HD..2 Cd's though)
    Want to install my just bought WD 80JB hd (ata 100)
     Any tricks tips or hints to temporarily install both HD's so's I can "copy" my old drive onto my new one, before removing it??
    Am worried about compatibilty issues re old and new drives coexisting long enough for a successfull data transfer.

    Best thing to do is  make the new drive the master,take out the old drive,reinstal xp(you are using xp,right)put the old drive in and copy the files you need and then reformat the old drive and use it as storage or backup..Ide controllers now allow you to use  two ata speeds,like 100 or 33,without any performance loss..in the old days the ide controller only ran as fast as the fastest device also if you must do a copy,WD has software on there web sight for tranfers such as yours. :P

  • KT3 Ultra 2R + Barton 3000+

    Hi all..
    Hope someone can help.
    I have a KT3 Ultra 2R board with the following stats:
    Athlon XP (Barton) 3000+ FSB 166 CPU
    CoolerMaster HHC-001 heatpipe H/sink with 80mm fan
    Antec 520W PSU
    2 x 100 ATA Maxtor Viper 80Gb HDD's with 8Mb cache each in striped RAID array
    Asus TI 4600 Ultra 128Mb V/card
    Audigy S/card
    Lite-on CD/RW
    Lite-on CD/DVD
    2 x 512Mb Corsair XMS 3000 DDR Ram (333 and above) with aluminium heat spreaders
    Lian-Li PC70 Tower case with 6 x 80mm fans
    Rounded cables throughout
    Win XP + SP1
    The Problem:
    This system worked fine with an Athlon XP 2200 CPU and I read MSI's CPU support list and saw the KT3 Ultra 2 6380E supported the Barton XP 3000+ CPU's so I bought one.  :P
    At first I had trouble booting on the 5.7 version bios, with the lock ups throught the bootup process. I reset the bois to the defaults and slowly worked up the settings using the recommendations in the forums.
    At the moment, the system will boot up with fast command set to normal, no agressive DDR timings, 1T command disabled, fastwrite disabled, agp read/write disabled and SDRAM set to SPD (HCLK).
    My 3DMark01 & 3DMark03 scores are lower than when I had the XP 2200 CPU installed and the SiSoft sandra results are the equivalent of a Athlon 2000. MSI says the board supports the Barton 3000+, but at what cost ???  :O
    The system is very unstable and and requires on average 3 boots to boot up successfully. The 3DMark03 test often locks up mid way.
    Any help or the settings MSI or you used to achieve their results would be VERY helpful. Please Help... ;(

    I have had a similar problem running my kt3 ultra2 (non raid) at 166 fsb. In mid april I bought a 2600+ 166 fsb athlon to upgrade my system from a 1.2 ghz athlon. I bought some new pc2700 crucial ram to go along with the processor. I had also recently bought a radeon 9700 pro in late march, and a 1.2 athlon would just be a waste of this great vid card. I had been running fine with the radeon and the 1.2 athlon with the msi 5.7 bios and 4.43 via 4-in-1's.
    I battled this problem for weeks. I bought a new antec 550 watt PSU, corsair xms 3200 ram, and new antec tower case trying to find out if the problem was ram, power or heat. I should also note that turning on spread spectrum helped a little in stability. Setting it to .50% made it stable in windows and games, but the computer would not turn on if shutdown unless I cleared the cmos. No setting besides this had any effect on stability. Even conservative ram timings. I was about to buy an Asus a7n8x when I realized that I had once run my old cpu and ram at 166 fsb when I had the 5.6 bios a couple of months back. I did not keep it like that in fear of damaging the ram while overclocked.
    So I reflashed to 5.6 which still supported the 2600+. That finally worked almost perfectly, although I still have to keep spread spectrum at .25% to be stable (which is odd, people say that is supposed to hurt stability). So in my situation, it was the bios that was faulty. I have had some very ramdom crashes to the desktop (3 of them) in games and one hardlock with a blank bluescreen in unreal2. This is over a span of a month. So it is not perfect. It might be the display drivers causing this, which I have recently upgraded, or I might need to back off my ram timings which are at 2-2-2-5 which this ram can handle easily at 166. 3dmark has yet to crash. Prime 95 passed when I ran it for 30 minutes. Im going to run prime 95 today and see if it will run for like 12 hours stable. Im still looking into getting a new nforce 2 mobo, however (abit or asus).
    I hope this helps your situation, you should give it a try. Although, the 5.6 bios does not support the 3000+. It might still work, it will maybe just not show up as a 3000+ in the bios, but as a 2.17 Athlon XP.
    I think MSI should be made aware of this possible 5.7 bios fsb instability. Why spread spectrum seems to be related in my situation, is really odd also.

  • PSU Query for MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU running 3000xp

    Hi There,
       Before buying a new Motherboard I was just wondering if the problems I'm getting are related to the PSU which is about 5 years old. I've just upgraded my processor to a Athlon 3000 XP 333 FSB which goes into the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E v1.X) motherbaord, which I've upgraded the Bios to version 5.7, I've also  upgraded my graphics card to the Leadtek Geforce FX5900XT which also plugs into the PSU. When setting my fsb to 166 my PC either won't boot or when I try to run say 3DMark it just freezes, but when I set my FSB to 133 it works fine. I was wondering if it is trying to draw too much power from the CPU.
       I don't really know how to write the PSU details down correctly so I've just copied everything from the unit.

    The 1/4 dividers has:
    PCI = 1/4*133 = 33mhz
    AGP = 2/4*133 = 66mhz
    The 1/5 dividers has:
    PCI = 1/5*166 = 33mhz
    AGP = 2/5*166 = 66mhz
    The futuristic 1/6 dividers will have:
    PCI = 1/6*200 = 33mhz
    AGP = 2/6*200 = 66mhz
    Your equation "...and the AGP card of 4X = 4(FSB/5)" would yield a result of 4(133/5) =  106mhz for the agp so it is way out of spec.
    Hey man, I've unlockes my athlon xp 1900+, changed multiplier to 10x, fsb to 166 and sisoft sandra 2002 sp1 said that the pci was running at 42 mhz and the agp at 84. MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU, bios 5.5
    Also, I can't run with 12.5/13x, it uses 12 instead.
    Can you help me?
