I upgraded my 2009 MacBook Pro to Mavericks 10.9.2 and now gmail won't connect, Safari has issues. What's up?

Just a week ago, I upgraded from the latest upgrade of Snow Leopard to Mavericks 10.9.2, due to the news about security concerns on all Apple computers and IOS devices. I did this upgrade at an Apple store under the guidance of a "genius".
The initial upgrade worked, but as days progressed I bagan noticing long boots of the OS, then long and longer time required to connect to my gmail account. Finally, I'm unable to connect with gmail at all.  I tried using Firefox and Safari, but to no avail.
As of today, I've had difficulty in connecting with the Apple support website as well. It took several tries throughout the day to get to this place where I could post my delimma.
Have there been similar issues recently concerning the 10.9.2 so called up-grade? I'm about to connect to my backup drive and re-install Snow Leopard, which worked fine for all general purposes.

Your profile still shows 10.6.8.
Try running the combo update.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.6.8 today and now it hard crashes the Operating System when I connect my iHome USB keyboard.  I get a window that states I must press the power button until the computer shuts down and then restart.  On reboot sends Panic Report to Apple with lots of USB error type stuff in it.  WORKED FINE UNTIL I UPGRADED TO 10.6.8 TODAY.

    Hey KAYLIEH,
Thanks for the question. I understand that your iPhone 4s is not recognized in iTunes for Mac. The following resource may provide a solution:

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

  • MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

  • I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • I want to upgrade my ram macbook pro 15'' without retina to 16gb and want more than 1600 hz

I have a Mac book Pro 15 inch without retina I wish to upgrade the RAM 4 GB to 16GB and I want to putting a ram with more speed then 1600 GHz can someone please tell me what is the maximum and if possible where can I buy it from it has to be compatible with my mac or else it's pointless.
    Regards Axl

Sorry, read the post as with retina.
    Standard RAM:
    4 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    16 GB*
    Details:
4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free. *Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this MacBook Pro.
    http://www.everymac.com
The link you posted is compatible RAM and from a reputable company. I bought my 2 X 8 GB modules from crucial when I upgraded my MBP RAM to 16 GB.
    Go with that kit.
Note that DDR3 1600 MHz RAM is the only type of RAM your machine takes.

  • Upgraded to 10.4.9 from Tiger 10.4.5 and now mac won't reboot

    Hello everybody
I bought a mac mini recently "in perfect working order" with lots of installed software and the mac engineer who sold it said it could be upgraded from 10.4.5 to 10.4.9 apple's latest. I did this last night and now it won't reboot! I get a white screen with the little wheel turning and then it switches off and gives up entirely. What can I do?

Thanks all for your help. Yes I was hoping to use a disc for a Power PC mac mini when it's an intel. I got the disc out by holding down the mouse on startup. I contacted the seller and he says my OS has got corrupted and I can get a mac doctor to reinstall it. He never included the original OS10.4.6 when he sold it to me. It was bought as sold - does he even have the original discs one wonders. Anyway I also told him that I had originally plugged in my ipod which said it wanted iTunes updating then when I had done that a message said iTunes wouldn't work unless I updated the OS to 10.4.9. Included when I updated the software was a firmware update. So the OS has become corrupted and must be restored by a Mac authorized repairer. I hope this is possible without losing the applications already installed
Anyway that's what I'll do and thanks everybody for all your great help

  • How much ram can i upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro running 2.26ghz

i currently upgrade my MacBook Pro mid 2009 with 2x 4GHZ 1066 mhz ddr3 and keeps on quitting while I'm using it. why?

What brand of RAM did you purchase?
Have you taken out the modules , cleaned the contacts and reinstalled them?
Have you tried the original RAM?
Have you run an Apple hardware Test?

  • Hi i have bought new macbook pro for a few weeks ,,  Facebook and Twitter both won't open the page says safari can't find server for Facebook even google chrome and firefox booth won't open Facebook

Hi i have a macbook pro retina,,,
i have been using this  mac for 4 weeks ,,
in some reason Facebook and twitter booth won't open for two weeks and all of the pages work perfectly fine
i have safari Version 8.0.2 witch is the latest version for now
even google chrome and firefox won't open Facebook and twitter
    i have mac os x 10.10.1

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

  • My macbook pro can see the network, gets full signal, but won't connect.  When I run diagnostics, it automatically connects, but only if I run the diagnostics.  Why won't it connect by itself?

Macbook Pro won't auto connect to wifi, but when I start diagnostics, then it will connect.  It seems it requires diagnostics in order to get connected to wifi.
    any ideas

    SOLUTION!
I've been suffering from this problem for a few months.  I tried everything suggested by everyone, and then, today, I had a mad idea.
I used to work in a room in the house that's about 12 metres away from the router. It's on the next storey up and horizontally about 8 metres away.  The problem started when I began to work in the same room as the router.
Today I became so frustrated that for some reason I walked into a room about 8 metres away on the same level - Guess what?  I connected with no problem at all. Feeling full of joy I walked back to the room where the router is located - Dropped internet connection within a few minutes!  Walked back to the the room that's 8 metres away and, hey presto! I have a connection. I now realise that the problem was that I moved too close to the router.
I can think of no logical explanation for my experience, but empirically it seems to work.  Does anyone have the faintest idea of why this should be the case?  In the absence of an answer I think I may have to start believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden - I'm just off to set a meal for them.
By the way, I don't know if it has any significance, but the router is a BT Infinity router that has replaced the incredibly unreliable Virgin Media cable connection
