I upgraded my Mac last night to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8, successfully, but this morning on start up, after signing in, I get a screen up saying "Setting up your Mac" and after an hour still nothing has happened. I have restarted, to no avail.
Upgrade successful, but this morning after signing in, Mac has locked up on "setting up your Mac" screen. Ive restarted it, and powered down and started again, but the same thing happens. Help!
I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!

Well i wouldn't see why your photo's, videos and music would trasnfer. As that is a android device, there is no way to have them transfer over the air to the iphone.
Contacts probably came from google. Your videos and such you would have to move them to PC then to the iphone. Same with your music. -
After updating to mavericks on my MacBook, the screen keeps saying "setting up your mac." It has been like this for hours! How can I make it go faster? It's has been like this for 4 hrs.
I don't think your mac is setting up. It's stuck.
I would:
hold the power button until it shuts down
unplug all peripherals
do a safe boot (restart and hold down the shift key until you see the apple logo).
If it starts up in a safe boot, then you can try restarting with a normal boot.
If it does not start with a normal boot, then you probably have some incompatible third party software. Likely culprits are:
MacKeeper
CleanMyMac
third-party antivirus software
any other "cleaning" or "optimizing" or similar third party "utilities".
A good place to start would be to uninstall any of those (while in safe mode) and then restart. -
I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.
The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it. -

Only if you have Office 2008 or 2011. Older Office versions are PowerPC apps, so they no longer work with Mavericks.
If you are running Office 2008 or 2011, open any Office app, go to Help menu (in the menu bar) > Check for Updates, and install the latest version.
If you are using an older Office version, uninstall it and install another application:
Upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011 by buying it from the Microsoft website.
Install Apple iWork applications after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
Install LibreOffice > http://www.libreoffice.org.
Remember to make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading. -

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

Hi, I am upgrading to Mavericks from Snow Leopard and after I downloaded the OS X from App Store, my MacBook Pro restarted automatically but unfortunately I am stuck in a grey screen with the apple icon in the middle and with the loading wheel turning underneath the apple. It's been so long as around 2 hours that I'm stuck in this screen. Can someone help me please??

if Mavericks installed successfully, then it should have created a recovery partition on your internal drive. Are you able to hold down a Command key and the R key while booting, to see if it starts into the recovery partition? If that doesn’t work, then you’ll need to use the original model-specific grey installation DVDs that came in the box with your MacBook Pro. Put the disc marked “Mac OS X Install DVD” into your internal SuperDrive, and reboot while holding down the C key. You’ll then be able to run the DVD’s Disk Utility command to “verify” your internal drive. -

If you have iPhoto from iLife '11, then I would first install it on your computer. In that way you would be able to get the new iPhoto free since you are running Mavericks.

I have just received an email encouraging me to upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Currently I do have in my computer several 3rd party software and programs (from Adobestuff, finalcut Pro, MS Office, ILife etc.
Will upgrading to OS X Mavericks affect the running of these software /programs? Will I need to also upgrade these softwares?There may be issues with compatibilty, as with any OS upgrade. Snow leopard (10.6.N) includes a piece of software from Apple called Rosetta. This software allows older PowerPC applications to run on Intel based Macs. This software does not run on any OS X higher than the latest Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. You can see if you have any of programs that require Rosetta installed by bringing up the "System Information" application through spotlight (click on the magnifying glass icon on the upper right, type System Information in the search field and select the application thta is found).
Once in System Information select "Applications" under "Software" near the bottom of the list. Scroll through the list of applications and if any indicate that they are PowerPC based then they will not run under Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Can anyone offer advice on this please, trying to upgrade to mavericks from snow leopard 10.6.8, when tryin to download from app store the mavericks X icon drops into the dock and continuously says ‘waiting’, I’ve installed the installer update which is meant to make this possible for snow leopard 10.6.8. Hardware is a macpro 2009 and fits the requirements in terms of memory and disk space. Thanks
Check the App Store Purchases tab to make sure the download hasn't been paused.

I upgraded to Maverick from Snow Leopard. Since the slowness problem is that I don't have enough RAM, how do I get my MacBook Pro back to Snow Leopard?
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They also have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the minimum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

Grey screen with spinning gear after downloaded maverick from snow leopard.
I have downloaded a osx maverick from my original snow leopard. It downloaded successfully but by the time need to restart,the grey screen appear with a spinning gear without any further progress,it jz hang there. What should I do? I have tried to re-download it for three times,it still the same. I have performed a disk utility repair, safe boot,nvram/pram reset but I haven't re-install it from a disk. Can anybody tell me what to do further? I'm not a computer genius.
Have you seen this Apple note on gray screen/spinning wheel boots?

The reference is to RAM. You need at least 2 GBs of memory installed.
