I upgraded to lion and can no longer use microsoft word

any ideas on how to access ms word etc?

If you were using Office 2004 or earlier, use Office 2008 or newer, TextEdit, Pages, OpenOffice, or similar software.

    They were already at v9 when Lion came out and decided that official support would be for v9 only; see here.
    According to this, the only thing PPC in v9 and v8 are video encoding for SWF export -- looks like an XTension according to System Profiler. Given their position of not officially supporting v8.x in Lion, that will probably always remain broken in v8. I use v8.5.1 in Lion; works fine for me -- I don't do any SWF exporting.
    I have a few other things on my MBP, recently upgraded to Lion; I upgraded just about every app to the latest versions with exception of Quark. The only  other PPC things besied that XTension are some scripts from Adobe Illustrator CS5.1, which got installed with CS 5.5. I guess Adobe forgot to upgrade those. No biggie, I never use them.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

    Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

    Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
    Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
    Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
    I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

  • UPgraded to Lion and can now longer access all my Entourage Contacts and Mail. What do I do. Desperate

    All my mail , contacts can no longer be opened as Entourage is a PPC app.
    What do I do to recover contacts and migrate to Apple mail.
    Would really appreciate help. Very important to me

    Download the 30 day trial of Office 2011 from Microsoft. You'll be able to open all your stuff from the antiquated version of Office and then move the info to Apple Mail.

  • I just upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer connect to the WIFI  any suggestions

    I Just up upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer connect to internet - any ideas?

    I have the same problem after loading OS X 10.10 Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008).  Wi-Fi (Time Capsule) connects OK, then I open Safari and it waits for a minute and then gives me a message that it can't load the page because I'm not connected to the Internet.  The Wi-Fi is fine.  When I run the network analysis, it shows that everything is fine up to the Internet; the dots are red after that.  I have another MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) and it loaded and runs with no known problems (so far).  I am writing this message on the Late 2008 MacBook Pro, so you can see that there is no problem with the Internet connection.  It is a Yosemite problem.  My iPhone and newer MacBook Pro connect with no problem.  I loaded Yosemite TWICE, then ran the Disk Utility and fixed some disk permissions but there were no other problems identified.  Restarting after reloading Yosemite and the same problem is there.  Restarted after running the disk utility and fixing disk permissions and it still can't connect to the Internet.  Same problem.  Does anyone have an idea how this might be fixed?  What's going on?  Thanks for your help.
    Update:  Air Drop also doesn't work.  Thanks.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?

    My screen sharing functionality did not show up in the dock with an updated icon.  It had a question mark- shows my connections but nothing works, I did make sure screen sharing is on and also connected to VPN.  Once I tried to launch screen sharing nothing happens.  Such an elegant solution in Mavericks not does not work. Ugh. Help!

    This is the post that got me set up- I too am running an older version at work vs. Yosemite. As soon as I followed is advice everything worked.
    Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?
    I believe the location of the "Screen Sharing" app has changed, which explains why if you had it in the dock it has been replaced by a ?
    Don't forget you can launch screen sharing (once your VPN connection is up) by typing in the Safari destination slot vnc://remotemachinename:portnumber  (omit the :port number if you are using the default VNC port, 5900).  This should launch Screen Sharing and put its icon in the dock.  You can drag the Screen Sharing icon to the left of your dock and it will hopefully remain there after you exit Screen Sharing, or you can right-click on the icon when it's running and select Options->Show in Finder to find out its new location and drag its icon to the permanent entries in your dock.
    Hope this helps; worked for me.

  • Difficulty scanning slides on my Epson V600  running Lion, Adobe Photoshop CS6,  and can no longer use the Epson scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?

    I am running Lion 10.7.5, Adobe Photoshop CS6, scanning slides on my Epson V600 and can no longer use the scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?
    In 10.7 there is not a twain that works with Photoshop for importing with all the options needed to scan transparencies. I noticed that when I was scanning in October 2012 I was still using CS6 so somehow I was managing to be able to use all the scan features.
    They sell 2nd party software (VieScan and Silverscript)which I found to be just mimially OK and very hard to use.
    I just want to scan like I used to.
    Can I use time machine to go back to an earlier operating sysytem LEOPARD,  and then do my scans and then save the photos and them go back to the LION system?
    I spent 7 hours trying crazy solutions - downloading Windows CS2 Photoshop and then using a program so I could run it on the apple. Then I couldn't figure out how to put a plug in for the scanner in the stupid windows Photoshop program. Googgling the computer like a mad woman trying to ask questions. I am not giving up...
    Please help if you can...
    Thanks...

    I assume you've tried using Image Capture. Give VueScan a try.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can not use my QuarkXpress program.

    Just upgraded to Lion and can not use my QuarkXpress program.

    Your best bet is to check the version of QuarkXPress you have. Since Lion does not include Rosetta my guess is this may be why it is not working. Check out this site http://roaringapps.com/apps:table. This site has a list of apps that work and don't work under Mac OS X Lion.
    If you are working in a production environment freelance or stuido that uses design apps like QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop you should always wait to upgrade your OS. We have a 3 to 6 month policy for upgrading computers and software.
    I hope the website helps.  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    Good Luck

    After the upgrade to ios5, I can no longer use my iPad to make purchases on ticketmaster.  Does anyone have a solution?

    Apple changed MobileMe to iCloud and then restricted iCloud to 10.7 users only unfortunately
    If your machine is a 64 bit processor Intel Mac you can upgrade to 10.7 for $29, however a lot of your 10.5/10.6/Rosetta based software could cease to function, especially third party hardware drivers for printers, fax machines, all-in-ones, scanners etc.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    Also depending how old the machine is, if it can accept 4GB of RAM (preferred), older video card, may not run 10.7 very well or stable.
    My advice is to keep at 10.6.8, get a web based email service that's plaform/hardware neutral, forward your iPhone emails there. Gmail/Yahoo Mail for instance.
    When your ready for new hardware and all new software, then buy a new machine.
    If your going to go to 10.7 on your present hardware, I advise you clone 10.6.8 to a external drive first, that way you can c boot off the 10.6 disk erase the drive completely (necessary to remove hidden Lion Recovery Partition) and option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and reverse clone.

  • If i cant upgrade to Lion how can i effectively use i cloud?

    If i cant upgrade to Lion how can i effectively use i cloud?

    OK paper weight is harsh, but i made the upfront investment to have longevity ....
    Reality:
    - We can't predict what Apple will do, we can only go on past behavior.
    - For the past decade Apple has stopped pretty much all support for anything except the current and previous operating system (OS) version.  Apple has brought out a new OS version roughly every 2 years.  This translates to roughly 4 years of update support.  In some cases Apple may stretch it a bit such as iTunes also still working under OS 10.5 (we're now on 10.7), but iTunes isn't an OS.   I do know with the recent malware incident Apple did not bring out a fix for any OS earlier than 10.6.  Now there's an interesting change ahead. Apple brought out Lion last year and is likely to bring out Mountain lion this year. We're now on a 1 year upgrade cycle. If Apple continues past pattern on only supporting the last two OS versions it means your OS basically only has an effective lifespan of 2 years instead of 4. Longevity?
    - Hardware.  We bought an iphone last December. I asked the person in the store about battery life. He said, "Oh, at least two years but you'll be thinking about getting rid of this one by then and getting a newer one."  Two years.
    I don't remember the exact criteria, but Lion won't run on the earliest Intel Macs (2006) and Mountain Lion likely won't run on some of the middle aged ones.  Snow Leopard (ca. 2009) won't run on any Mac made prior to 2006. Reviewing OS releases for the past 6 years or so it seems to me you get roughly 5 years before new OS releases won't run on your hardware any more.
    So, we have software support dropping out after 4 years or so (maybe now down to 2 years???) and hardware becoming obsolete after 5 years.  Is that longevity?

  • I updated to Firefox 4.0.1 and can no longer use the thumb/finger spreading feature on the trackpad of my Mac Powerbook (Mac OSX 10.6.7) to enlarge text on websites. How do I restore this function?

    I updated to Firefox 4.0.1 and can no longer use the thumb/finger spreading feature on the trackpad of my Mac Powerbook (Mac OSX 10.6.7) to enlarge text on websites. How do I restore this function?

    * [/questions/777886]
    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.
