I upgraded to Lion, Excel won't open, and what is "Solver" found in the "Launchpad"?
I upgraded to Lion last night, I have Mac OX X 10.7.1 and all other Microsoft Office products (Word & PowerPoint) work just fine, but within the "Launchpad" of Lion, there is an icon called "Solver). When I click on it, the Excel - icon opens up but the program does NOT, and something called "Solver" (found in the Launchpad) also opens up but immediately shuts down, showing an error. WTH???

From what you are describing it sounds like iTunes thinks the files are there, but they are missing or have been relocated. Use this article to locate the files.

You also have the option of deleting the entries you see in iTunes, and re downloading them using:

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?
Regarding not being able to open iPhoto. As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
"NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly?? I don't know....

First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility. If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD. This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files. The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also. -

It sounds like you moved Mail out of the Applications folder, and mapped that Mail to the Dock. Go to the Applications folder and see if your current operating system compatible Mail program is in the Applications folder. Note 10.7 is Lion. 10.6.8 and earlier versions of 10.6 are Snow Leopard. You posted in the wrong forum for Lion. We can ask a moderator move the thread once you verify what operating system you are running, and update your profile to be more accurate.

I'd be grateful for your help.
I've just bought a new laptop and installed Office 2013. I used Excel 2013, did what I needed to do and saved it. This was 5 days ago.
Today, I've tried opening the file from my desktop and get the error message 'There was a problem sending the command to the program'.
And when I try to open Excel to do the DDE fix, which seems to be the best suggestion, I can't open Excel at all. I've tried to get into it from the Apps screen.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
ThanksDon't seem like this can be fixed so I went back to version 6.0.2 which works good.
I have Chrome now as my default browser and will not use fire fox until they fix it!

I have restarted my computer several times but no result.Well we thought it may be something to do with the way FCP writes all the Sequences that it may have something to do with it, but we have hours and hours of tape that we are editing and we need to work on small sections at a time and we are testing different flows of the edits and save as needs to be used. If FCP can’t handle save as, why do they put it in the program? We are pushing for an hour of video and we are now ready to give up on the HD and just convert it to DV, because of FCP 5.1.4 crashing or just being slow on the G5. The DV stuff is quick and it may be best for us anyway. This thing needs to look rough.
I started with FCP4 and my partner had experience with FCP2 and then we both are now using 5.1.4 and it is doing strange things and he said he was use to doing commercials on FCP2 on a laptop and it was easy…they have so many options and settings it’s no where near the same as FCP2, but we will learn what we need. I know some of it is a learning curve on our end, but as we upgraded our programs the last time, all Apple sent was disk and the only manuals I have are 4.5. and I need info on how best to go from FCP 5.1.4 to compressor then to DVD Studio Pro 4 so we can see how our edits look on DVD. The help menu is not the best I’ve seen and that’s why I am looking to the group.

I receive the message: The file "iTunes library.itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I do not know exactly what this means. I have Windows 7 on my computer and was able access itunes until just recently. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes multiple times and that does not work. Sometimes I can get in when immediately after installing, but then if I close it, i cannot get back in. Now, i can't get in at all.
That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

This problem only started when I upgraded to FF 4.0. I am running Windows 7. When I go to the task manager I am able to see the error message in the processes area, if I highlight it and tell the task manager to stop it, FF immediately starts and runs normally. I have no idea where the error message is coming from.

Messages in search results won't open and can't be found
I run a local search in the search box on the top right of the email screen. Three messages are found. I click on any of the three messages, and the message list screen appears, but the message is not listed.
Is there any way to determine where these three messages are stored? They apparently still exist somewhere, but I can't find them.
I can search for other keywords, and the search function works just fine. Somehow, these three messages are being stored somewhere obscure.

Additional Information: The left side bar of the search results indicates that the messages are in a folder I created within Local Folders, but that folder just isn't there.There's good news and bad news. With your guidance, I was able to rebuild the Global Database. It took just a few minutes to re-index. Unfortunately, those three messages are gone completely now -- no shadow of them remaining when I rerun the search. I suspect that, while the messages were seemingly invisible, the folder they were in got deleted under the assumption that the folder was now empty. Oops. Oh well. Whatchagonna do! It makes me wonder, though, what other emails might be gone now that I'm not even aware of.
It sounds like rebuilding the Global Database might be a regular maintenance item for me moving forward.

My time machine backup disc has apps from Mountain Lion that won't open now that I have Yosemite. They all say need to be upgraded to Yosemite. Go to app store. But app store sees that I have yosemite so doesn't even show me an udate option. How can Update these files??
How do you know they won't run in Yosemite? You're not trying to fiddle with stuff in your backup from the Finder, are you? If so you are likely to render that backup unusable.
WHen when you restore them from your backup, they should be updateable. -

After upgrading to Lion, I went to open Mail and received the message that it needed to upgrade my Mail database - this may take a few minutes. The bar shows it is about 1/5 along and has been there for over 10 hours.
I tried quitting and starting again but it just jumps back to the same spot.It is quite large, but I have tried two of the fixes suggested and things now seem to be moving along.
