I upgraded to mavericks and now my wi-fi doesn't connect
I recently (and reluctantly) upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks (OS 10.9.2) so that it would be in sync with my desk tops. After doing so, I discovered that Wi-Fi is inoperative. Tooltip over the wi-if symbol shows "Wi-Fi: No hardware installed" and running diagnostics through system preferences: network simply contnues to scan without result.
Well, couple of options. As an FYI, the "No Hardware Installed" error is usually an indicator of hardware failure. It is VERY hard for software to damage hardware, so odds are, if this is a hardware issue, Mavericks wasn't what broke it. But, before taking it in for service, there are a couple of options that we have.
Option 1)
Rule out software issues.
To do this, open keychain access (easiest way is to open spotlight with command+spacebar, type in keychain, open keychain access by clicking it). From here, find your wireless settings, it should have your SSID in the name. Delete these. Yes, that means you need to know your wifi password.
Open a "go to the folder" window. You can do this by opening finder, and pressing command+shift+g on the keyboard. Once that's open, copy and paste this into it:
/library/preferences
From here, scroll to the bottom to find a folder named "SystemConfiguration"
Drag and drop this folder to the desktop (don't want to trash it yet. This file should auto restore, but just in case it doesn't, having a backup is nice). It will ask for your admin password.
Once this is moved (make sure it's also deleted from /library/preferences!), restart the system.
Once the computer is off for the restart, let's do an SMC reset.
Did that bring your wireless back up? If not, odds are, we're looking at a hardware issue. You have the option to take this in for service, and if it's in AppleCare, that's what I would do. You also have some 3rd party options. If this wasn't in warranty, I would grab a USB wireless receiver and just use that. Gets the job done for about $30-$50.
Note: These steps may cause your energy saver settings to reset. If you have anything customized, you can set it back up via system preferences -> energy saver after the restart.
Option 2)
Don't worry about ruling out software, just take it in for repair.
Option 3)
Don't worry about either, use ethernet.

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now don't have access to iphoto. I cannot find my iphoto library to back the photos up before upgrading the iphoto but see the photos when I try to change screensaver? Where are my photos so I can back them up?
The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Upgraded to maverick and now can't open excel projects
I recently upgraded to maverick and now can't go back to open excel spreadsheets I need for my business. I've even changed the permissions and I can only preview, not modify. Any suggestions?
Was just having this issue with my wife's computer after upgrading to Mavericks. Maybe a long shot, but if your filenames have forward slashes in them (such as for dates), change them to backslashes. No idea why but it works. I seem to recall having the same problem with Excel some time in the past and this was the solution then too.

I upgraded to Mavericks and now some of my utilities --- such as disk utility and system information no longer work. I find Disk Utility useful and would like to have it. Doesn't Makericks include
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall Mavericks over your current installation. -

I have just upgraded to Maverick and now I cannot find certain JPG 's . These files do exist however I can find them manually . I rely on the search facility and this is slowing me down, I am having to trawl through stuff to find the file I want , before I would put in part of the title and the machine would find it.

Upgraded to Mavericks and now my events from iPhone won't sync to iPad
I updated to Mavericks and now I cannot get any events to transfer from my iPhone to either my Mac or my iPad. I have read endless posts on this and have tried many of the suggestions. I think both my phone and iPad are set up correctly to speak to each other via iCloud, but nothing seems to pass through the ether. I know, from all my reading of other posts, I am not alone in not being very impressed with Mavericks but I should think by now, Apple would have solved our collective problems and concerns.
Does anyone know how to get the version for Lion?

The Safari download page specifically says the version is for Snow Leopard, and only offers this version, and when I try to install it, the routine gets blocked complaining that it needs Snow Leopard.
I also tried to simply remove the app in order to use Software Update. But this is blocked as well.

Help! I upgraded to Mavericks and now Aperture won't open.
It says "you can't open the application "Aperture" because it is not supported on this type of Mac. I would never have upgraded if I had known I would lose Aperture. And I don't want to pay to upgrade Aperture.
I have version 3.2.1 of Aperture. I didn't update it prior to installing Mavericks. Now I've tried to do 2 updates (3.2.2 and 3.4.5), but I get an error message saying I need a version later than 3.0 to update, and it won't install the update.

I upgraded to Mavericks and now can't open/save files
I upgraded my system to Mavericks 10.9.2 and now Creative cloud Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator (the few programs that I've installed) will now not either open files, or if they do takes 3-5 minutes for simple files, and if they do open and I try to save them again they take even longer to save.
I've re-installed these programs... have throw away preference files, changed finder preferences, restarted multiple times, even zapped pram... nothing has worked!!!!
