I upgraded to Yosemite, BUT A BIG PROBLEM HERE!

I upgraded my macbook pro to yosemite. It ran very smoothly after the installation yesterday. Then now It starts to freeze when I played a game. The cursor was just in that ball shape icon. And I can't even do the option+command+esc thing.
So I hold down the power button to shut it down. After that, I power it on and now it was just stuck in the apple logo with the loading thing below it.
I tried going on to recovery mode but nothing happens, it was just still doing the same stuck logo. But holding the option button, it WORKED BUT macintosh hd was just there, there was no recovery hd like some other people said. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS.

Try booting up in safe mode

  • I am experiencing difficulties opening some web-based PDF files on my iPad. I was having the same difficulty opening the same PDFs on my iMac (after I upgrade to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in settings.

I am experiencing difficulty opening some web-based PDF documents on my iPad. I had exactly the same difficulty on my iMac (after I upgraded to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in security settings in Safari (in OSX).
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to similarity adjust the security settings in Safari in iOS 8.
The message I get when I attempt to open the PDF (on my iPad) is as follows:
"To view the full contents of this document you need a later version of PDF viewer. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader from ..."
Needless to say this is unhelpful for two reasons:
    - I have the very latest version of Adobe Reader; and
    - in iOS Adobe Reader is not a plug-in and plays absolutely no role in opening web-based PDF documents.
If anyone has experienced this difficulty and has been able to overcome it I would be most appreciative to hear of you solution.
    Cheers

If you don't have it then you will have to reinstall Lion:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Then you can download and install Yosemite if your computer meets the system requirements:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Now that I have upgraded to Yosemite I have a problem when I scan documents.  Formerly, a window showed today's activity.  Now, I have to search through all the documents in my history to find what I just scanned.  Sometimes I can't even find the doc.

Most scan apps have a setting whereas, your scan(s) can go directly to your desktop.  No need to "hunt" for scanned docs.

  • Thinking of upgrading to Yosemite -  but want to be able to downgrade to mountain lion - How?

Thinking of upgrading to Yosemite -  but want to be able to downgrade to mountain lion - How?
    Hi all.
I am wondering if I upgrade to Yosemite is there a way that I will be able to downgrade / revert back to mountain lion if I find out that too many of my most essential applications  are no longer working?
I have read there have been compatibility issues  between some of my most necessary / favourite applications I use in mountain lion and Mavericks,  which is why I never upgraded to Mavericks.
However , I am noticing in the app store there are a lot of apps I am interested in which I no longer able to purchase / download because they require Yosemite, and mountain lion is out-dated.
However, if I upgrade my OS, I am afraid of incompatibility with the most important apps in my workflow though.
    Thanks.

Hi Arthur thank you very much for your response.
    Sorry for my late reply.
My following question is summed up in the last sentence of this post.
[is only one time machine backup possible per external backup hard drive? Or can I make separate Time Machine backups for separate purposes?]
I went ahead and installed Yosemite.
There are some things I like about Yosemite and I might trial it for a little bit longer,
but after a couple of days of trials and trying out, I've decided that I think I generally prefer mountain lion better,
and I will reinstall it , and get a disk image of Yosemite and run that as a Virtual Machine when I need it.
[^ This is what I should have done in the first place.]
Before I installed Yosemite I [stupidly] used Time machine to back up only my application folders / application support / general system files,
[I used system preferences to exclude everything else in the TM backup] so that I would not have to reinstall my applications / essential system structures.
I did not back up the rest of my files and folders / whole machine though.
    I should have done this.
I just didn't want to wait for about 800 gb of data to transfer [impatient].
[in retrospect I should have run Yosemite through a virtual machine within Mountain Lion to see if I liked it before installing it completely].
With Yosemite installed would I be able to make a SEPARATE time machine backup of all my files / documents / media folders in Time Machine on Yosemite, and use this to re-install these on Mountain lion if I downgrade ?
Or is only one time machine backup possible per external backup hard drive ?
    Thanks.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

  • Hello, I am trying to upgrade to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error. Resizing the partition does not work, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my macbook pro to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error.
Resizing the partition does not work for me and I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot and the disk manager is lost.
Anyway to tell the yosemite installer that it should not pay attention whether the disk is bootable or not ?
If I am doomed, any way to delete the installer and downloaded OS from my hard drive ?
    Thanks for your help

As usual, the Linux installer wrecked the partition table. You would have to boot from your OS X installation disc and repartition. Doing so will of course remove all data from the drive, so you must back up first if you haven't already done so.

  • I want to upgrade to Yosemite but I have questions

I have never upgraded my OS on my MAC, it's always worked fine, and still does. I'm still using OSX 10.6.8  but i'm thinking about upgrading to Yosemite. I have Word, Excel & Powerpoint, all 2008. I also Have Adobe Bridge CS4 and Photoshop Elements 8.0  I'm wondering if anyone knows if those programs will still work with the new OS, or am i about to be in the market for new software too?
Also, this Mac is pre-Cloud, will upgrading to Yosemite, make my Mac now a part of the cloud?
    Any help is appreciated
    TY!

I'm running Office 2008 on my 2011 iMac with 8 GB of memory and it runs fine.  I've got PSE 10 which also runs.  If you need to upgrade your PSE then the latest version would be the way to go.
PS CS4 should work with Yosemite as I'm running CS3 which works fine.  However, you'll need to download and install Java from this Apple webpage:  Java for OS X 2014-001 for both PS and PSE to run.
Definitely go to the Roaring Apps website and check out all of your 3rd party apps there before making the jump to see which will need to be upgraded.

  • Yosemite and mail - BIG problems with memory leak

Our small company has had significant problems since upgrading (?) to Yosemite, which by all we could glean from Apple would be a relatively bug free install. At random times, usually while composing an e-mail, the mail program will just spike in memory consumption, going from a couple hundred Mb of RAM consumption to over 70 Gb in just 3-5 minutes. This obviously causes the entire machine to come to a standstill and the mail process needs to be killed. A cascading problem is that when this happens any other programs will also become non-responsive, and they also will need to be killed, often at the loss of work. I've talked with the support people at Apple and disappointingly they seem to be unaware that this is an issue, or more likely they are aware of it (I mean, just do a search of "Yosemite mail memory" and see what you get) and want to downplay that the release has been a HUGE failure for MANY people. After about 20 of these application memory events since upgrading over this past weekend at our company I would like to see where Apple is on fixing this. BTW Apple, your user base is fairly sophisticated with computing, and having your online assistants continue to try and point the problem at the users - who are all having the EXACT SAME ISSUE - is alienating your user base. I've been using Apple for over 20 years and this is the worst release you've ever had. I think you're well on your way to becoming Microsoft in 1994, we need the old Apple company back.

I have the same problem and after a few days I am thinking seriously about abandoning Apple mail and .... going back to Outlook, I do not like MS, but may not have another option. Any suggestions.
I am amazed that Apple does not give any information about the problem. It does look like they are loosing their touch and appear to be following the Microsoft and Blackberry path.
Within a small company like mine, another few days of this and it will be impossible to keep it.
Hate to say it, but for the first timewith Apple I miss the old OS, it did not look as good but at least it worked..

  • I have an older mac, i purchased Snow Leopard so that i could upgrade to Yosemite but now it says Snow Leopard is too out of date to update to Yosemite!

So i have an older Macbook that ran Leopard and i was told via Apple that in order to upgrade fully to Yosemite i would first have to purchase Snow Leopard, then i'd be able to update to Yosemite for free. I got the Snow Leopard disc (it was scratched which REALLY ****** me off, since i paid $20, but it seemed to work installing the new OS so whatever), and it's now at version 10.6.3 - i tried to run software updates and it says it's successful, but that i need to restart my computer. Every time i try, the screen just freezes with the desktop image and never restarts. And now i can't update to Yosemite because i need to have 10.6.8! I am very frustrated and not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help?

Don't panic. You can download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then you can access the App Store in order to download Yosemite.
Meanwhile you need to reinstall Snow Leopard properly:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Can I upgrade to Yosemite but Not Keynote

I am looking to update my system but due to work and compatibility issues, I can not update my Keynote to the most recent version. Before updating my system, I wanted to make sure that Keynote does not automatically update itself after installing Yosemite. If it does I will have to roll my system back to Mavericks so I can continue to work on my company Keynotes.
I looked for documentation online to confirm these updates are completely separate but I have not been able to find anything.
    I appreciate any help/guidance.

When you download the OS, that is all that is being downloaded. Keynote, Pages, iMovie, etc. are not part of the OS itself; they are separate apps and will update/download separately. If you do not want Keynote to update, then make sure that you never hit "update all" in the Updates Section of the app store as that would include all the updates available. I update mine separately as I also do not want one particular app to update, so I make sure that I update each one separately and bypass the one I do not want to update.
In any case, make sure you have a full backup before upgrading - just in case.

  • I have a installed the free upgrade to yosemite but cannot get my computer to open.  Just get a grey screen, not a sign in screen.  How do I get it to start up?

I installed Yosemite on my Mac and after over 2 hours, the computer went to reboot.  A grey screen appeared and that was all that happened.  I couldn't move the cursor to close out.  I could not force quit.  I had to turn off the computer with the button.  Upon turning the computer on again, the apple icon showed up with a progress bar under it.  The progress bar proceeded to move until about 1/3 of the way across and then a lank grey screen appeared again  The arrow cursor appears, but no screen sign in or anything else will appear.  Again, to turn the computer off, I have to hit the button on the back of the computer and then I return to the loop again  Help!

Do you have your Mac backed up?
If not, you should use Time Machine to back up your Mac to an external hard drive just "in case".
But if all you did was change your existing ID, then deleting the Calendar infomation from the Mac when you sign out should not be an issue. Since it is the same Apple ID, it is the same iCloud account (just with a different name), so your Contacts, Calendars, etc. are stored in iCloud. When you sign back in, you will have the option to sync Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc. with iCloud - it should already be checked. Just sign back in, and your iCloud info will re-download to your Mac.
I just tried this, and all of my stuff showed up when I signed back in. Notes took a couple of seconds to load once I opened them, but they are all there.
Note: If you are signing on with a brand new Apple ID, then nothing will be downloaded because it will be an entirely different iCloud account. But if it is the same Apple/iCloud/iTunes ID with just a new email, then it will all be restored.
    Cheers,
