I upgraged my macbook 2.4 GHz ram to 4g and now lower slot shows empty

I have recently upgraged my ram to 4g and now the lower memory slot always shows empty.
Any suggestions?

I currently have 4gb in my core 2 duo (First Model) macbook. The last 700k is not recognized due to the internal design of the macbook, so the real "maximum" the computer sees is 3.3 gb. A web site published the speed gains with more memory, here is the web page for the results:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/MacBook/Testing/Memory_Benchmarks
4 Gigs of ram works great in my macbook, I noticed a huge speed increase even on boot, everything is much snappier than the original 1 gb.

changing the ram has nothing to do with the photos missing.  Did you install the ram or someone else?

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

  • I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • MacBook 2.2 GHz (late 2007, SR) and 4 GB CRUCIAL RAM

I got two sticks of RAM from CRUCIAL, and I cannot use both at the same time. The MacBook will boot with one Apple OEM and one Crucial stick, and it is happy (crucial RAM works), but as soon as I take the Apple stick out, the MacBook will not boot up. I tried various combinations of slots, sticks, no way.
Searching I discovered this is a problem only with CRUCIAL Ram, seems like other brands are working OK. Apparently Crucial is aware and they exchange the RAM, but I am not sure if I want to take a chance or just send it back to buy.com

First, this isn't a compatibility issue. The problem is that the OP has RAM that doesn't work, Crucial has acknowledged it's a known problem with their product, and has offered to replace the bad RAM. How is this a compatibility problem? How is this a problem for Apple? How is this an appropriate technical problem for the forums?
Of course it's a compatibility issue. It's not much different than if I posted a question asking why my Simpletech Pininfarina drive doesn't work on my MacBook with a single plug (doesn't supply enough power), or why doesn't my PC2-6400 memory module work (that's still a mystery). I think the OP simply want to understand a technical reason why it may or may not work.
I'll just say for the OP that if there's any reason why it works in certain configurations or doesn't, it isn't likely to be an issue that gets fixed in firmware. I think it would be helpful if maybe the part number of the modules were given, and if they were PC2-6400 (DDR2-800). I've heard of some strange issues where people tried using 2GB PC2-6400 modules, and they worked singly, along with an OEM 512MB PC2-5300 module, but not with both 2GB PC-6400 modules together.
I think you need to review the Terms of Use along with the OP.
I did last night before I replied, and did so again. Can't find anything that suggests the original topic violates the terms of the Apple Discussions Use Agreement. The OP is trying to use a MacBook more effectively, which is perfectly on point.

  • I'd love some help trying to figure out why my 2008 MacBook no longer recognizes my external drive and now is not downloading photos from my iphone....?

After many years of having no problems at all on my Macbook, I recently figured I should finally upgrade my OS. I did that about three weeks ago, updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I used Time Machine at least once after the OS upgrade but now Time Machine no longer recognizes the external drive I have used for all these years to back up. The MacBook does not "see" it. (Disk Utility does however.) The computer then also stopped recognizing another La Cie back-up that I have and now... my iPhone cannot download photos? Yikes.
I have, of course, shut down numerous times, used different cables (that worked for some) and the two USB drives. I even used a firewire. Nothing worked. I also tried to "Repair disk" on Disk Utility. It didn't work either, giving me an error (that I didn't save, sorry).
I read many other discussions on the file format of the external drive and of course I'd be happy to reformat the external drives--however, it is obviously a tad nerve-wracking to reformat drives before having an accessible back-up. Suggestions? I do not remember what file format they have but am pretty sure it's not the Mac file system someone mentioned. The drives are a 2009 WD "My Passport Elite" and La Cie 2007 d2 Quadra,
In terms of other hardware available, we do have another MacBook Air but it has  started rejecting both drives as well (without the Snow Leopard upgrade). We have an old Dell but it wouldn't have the disk space to help out much.
Any thoughts on the process involved would be welcome.  Any ideas on the iPhone rejection would be helpful as well! It is a 30gig iPhone 4 that has 20 or so gigs free (not clear as iTunes says that there are abour 18 Gigs on the phone but 24 free gigs? I may be bad at math but that's 40 gigs...).
I am checking out iCloud but apparently there are only 55 gigs available?
Will be glad to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

    Good afternoon Lyssa,
Phew. First of all, thanks in advance...these blogs are always comforting help!
So, to answer your questions: For the age of the hard drive.Well, I added memory a couple of years ago (RAM and hard drive). Being a mom leads me to eat up a fair amount of gigs with photos of my kids and, in fact, I think I entirely replaced the original drive, so it is a couple years younger than 2008 since I did that in March 2010. If there is some way to verify that (whether or not I replaced the entire drive), I'm all ears. I have 311 Gigs free, so it is not a space issue. I verified the startup disk on Disk Utilityand nothing showed up.
    Question 1- What formats...
The La Cie is format Windows NT Filesystem 3G ....At the time that I bought it I was still using a PC as well as a Mac and was told by afriend to use this format...
The WD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I again tried to repair the WD last night and this is the error message: "Error: DiskUtility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Also, Time Machine tried again to back-up and gave  me this error: "Files can't becopied onto the backup disk because it appears to be 'read only'. You may needto repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't berepaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machinepreferences to select a different backup disk."
    Question 2. Other cables...
I used two other cables with the WD and that didn't change anything.
Question 3... Fire Wire from the La Cie
Yes, I used the Firewire cable from the La Cie and it is indeed present, though still not visible in Finder. Since it is not Mac OSExtended I know that I can't use Time Machine with it.
    So, in summary...
I can plug in the La Cie and it is functional on the MacBook, visible on Disk Utility but not visible in Finder. The WD drive is not visible and not functional. So we can think it is indeed the WD that is not working.... Also, the iphone photos did, in the end, get downloaded, so it is not something more general.
    Causes...
I forgot to mention that there is a "lost+found" file on the WD which apparently points to a UNIX /OS issue?
    Some kind of "insurance"?....
I'm curious about how people avoid this kind of issue. You just regularly replace back-up drives and hard drives before problems come up? Time Machine is great and saves many of us from disasters, however, knowing that your Time Machine back-ups are vulnerable makes the whole system insecure. No way to have alarms ring before the drive goes out?
    As for ways ahead...
It seems that I ought to be able to copy off of the WD to the MacBook then erase it and reformat it and start over again. However, I haven’t been able to see its contents except on random occasions. If you have any ideas on how to copy the Time Machineback-ups from the WD, again, I'm all ears!

  • New ram, install in upper or lower slot? Any difference

    Hi
I have just purchased a 1GB of ram.
I already have a 512MB which is installed on the lower slot. I have installed the 1GB on the upper slot and it works, just because it was easier.
I was wondering if it makes a difference for performances if the biggest chipis set up in the lower or upper slot.
    Many thanks

    Hi, lune. No, it doesn't.

  • I've installed icloud on my ipad but when I tried to install it on my MacBook re mobileme, must have blocked it and now get a message saying I need to enter another name

How can I uninstal my mobileme account and install my icloud address? Mobile me doesn't recognise my Apple ID....won't allow me to open icloud on my MacBook. keep getting a message saying I need to enter another name or pin......nothing works........I've probably blocked it as server keeps saying try later.......

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). (If you are currently pre-Snow Leopard you will have to upgrade to that to access the Mac App Store: it's available in the online Apple Store.)
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • 15" MacBook Pro runs hot, fan is loud, and incredibly low battery life

My 15" MBP was bought in March or April (can't remember) from Singapore Apple Store. Here are the stats:
    MacBook Pro 15-Inch, Late 2011
    Memory 8 GB 12222 MHz DDR3
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Also I'm using about 1/2 of the available 750 GB of storage.
    Here's what's up:
    1. The fans boot immediately after the computer is turned on and never stop, making everything much too loud...like a plane is taking off or something.
    2. The computer is WAY too hot. Right now I'm running Astrill, Chrome, Activity Monitor, and System Utility, and when I put my hands on the thing it feels like my fingers are going to melt.
    3. The battery life, even at a full charge, is about an hour overall, which ***** for so, so many reasons.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. I took it to the Shanghai Genius Bar, but I think that the language barrier is impeding my ability to really say what's wrong. I backed up, and they wiped the hard drive, re-loaded the OS and put all my old stuff back on the computer. They also deleted SOMETHING from the Preferences part of the library, but I don't know what it was. Everything runs much faster now, but the fan, the heat, and the battery are still having their issues.
    2. I've checked the "all processes" CPU usage. There's nothing unusual (as far as I can tell), so I'm at a serious loss as to say why the computer is running so hard. Even with all the processing running as you see below, the fan's still blasting and I've lost 50% battery life in the past 40 minutes.
    3. I've tried the fix that requires deleting com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.lockfile. It changed the way the desktop looked and absolutely nothing else.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me! I'm a graphic designer and often run the CS6 Suite. (Currently, however, I am NOT running any Adobe programs and I'm still experiencing the problems.) It's really important that I am able to run Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign at once, and it CAN, but with the heat problems I'm having without ANY of the graphics stuff running, it worries me.

Just took another look at iStat Menus (I've only had it for a couple of days - I used to use the old iStat Pro widget) and it seems as if you can make fan speed defaults and use them instead of relying on your MBPs sensors to take care of the fans... see...
Might want to use that 'medium' speed (there by default as I know I didn't add it) and keep an eye on your temps. If you start heating up to much, go back to the 'Default'.

  • Too much RAM... and now?

    I have an iMac 8,1 - 24-inch, Early 2008. It is fitted with 2x2 GB (4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) RAM.
This is expandable (unofficially) to a max of 6 GB addressable memory.
The best thing (but not necessary) is to place them in 'pairs'. So 1x 2GB en 1x 4 GB is possible, but slower than 2 equal DIMMs.
What I'm wondering now is what happens if I place 2 pcs. of 4GB DIMMs:
    • Will these DIMMs be recognized?
    • If so, are of the placed 8 GB now only 6 GB recognized as addressable memory?
    • Or are things bound to go very wrong?

You CANNOT use two 4 GB RAM modules stabley.  The correct procedure, which I too have done, is to use one 2 GB module and one 4 GB module.  That will give you the maximum stable speed in your system.
    Hope this helps
