I use Firefox 4. Stop pestering me to upgrade to Firefox 5.

I was happy with Firefox 4. The toolbar across the top was very important. When I downloaded Firefox 5 I lost years of valued information. I was very angry. I am an average user not a computer geek. Somehow by fooling around I managed to download Firefox 4, which returned all my lost bookmarks etc. I am not the only user to complain about Firefox 5 not having a toolbar.
Now, every day I receive a message telling me to upgrade to Firefox 5. This is very irritating, if I press the wrong button I am back at version 5. I want these massages to stop.

Looks like you are using a bookmark add-on that is not compatible with Firefox 5.<BR>
To stop prompts for upgrades:<BR><BR>
# Go to '''Firefox''' menu
# Click on '''Preferences'''
# Select '''Advanced''' icon
# Click on '''Update''' tab
# Under '''Automatically check for updates to''' setting, ''uncheck'' '''Firefox'''
<BR>By the way, note that Firefox 4.0 is no longer being maintained with security updates. It means that if you continue to use it, you might expose yourself to internet browsing related security threats. It is ''highly recommended'' that you install Firefox 3.6 instead. Mozilla is still supporting it for a short period of time. Hopefully, your bookmarks add-on would be compatible with it too. You can download Firefox 3.6 from [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html here]. Please see this article on how to install it: [[Installing a previous version of Firefox]].

  • Another web browser has hijacked my Firefox and I cannot see how to get rid of it. In the meantime, I have stopped using Firefox on my laptop because I do not trust this other web browser.

A website I was using to find out some transport information has hijacked my Firefox on my laptop and I am unable to get rid of it. I do not trust this other browser so I have stopped using Firefox altogether on my laptop until I find out how to get rid of this other browser. I have an Apple MacBook.

Hi there and thanks for replying. I am not quite sure what you mean by 'restore back to the troubled date'. Would you please explain how I should do this?

  • The ability to Scroll when using Firefox has suddenly stopped but works ok in IE, microsoft apps etc. Help please?

The mouse driver is Synaptics but this works with all other apps and Internet Explorer, but suddenly stopped when using Firefox and all tabs. Not sure why so can you help?

If it is a laptop, I've heard of vertical and horizontal scrolling being switched on the touch-pad in Firefox. Bring up "Mouse" in the Control panel and see if you can fix there, best if just going there fixes, but that's really pushing luck. If you activate horizontal and deactivate vertical wonder what happens in other applications.
My driver only allows vertical scrolling control along the right edge and does not provide horizontal scrolling at the bottom edge I turn the mousepad off though and use a mouse.

When you click the download link on [http://getfirefox.com GetFirefox.com], you should be asked if you wish to Run or Save the file. If the described situation happens when trying to Run the download, try instead to Save it and put the file on your Desktop or a similar place where you are certain that you can find it again.
When the download is complete, try double-clicking the downloaded file in the normal Windows Explorer (browse your way to the file from My Computer). This should start the installation.
If you notice in the Explorer window that the file seems to be lacking the Firefox orange/blue icon, rightclick the file and select Properties. The picture should look somewhat like the attached picture (except that mine's in danish, but that is irrelevant) if saved correctly - if it does NOT look like this, please describe the contents or attach a screenshot of the box. Especially what it says under "File type" - it should be "Program"; if it's not, we'll have to look into what the problem could be here.
Slightly off-topic, your Internet Explorer seems to be quite a bit out of date (IE 6, where current version is IE 8), so I would strongly recommend that you try to run Windows Update to get your system updated. If this is a company system (like a Terminal Server thin client machine), this may not be possible, and your system administrator will most likely have to help you.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

I use Firefox as my default browser but, on any site, keep getting some words underlined in green from which an ad pops up. Really peeing me off! Doesn't happen on IE or Chrome. How can I stop this?

From what you have described, I don't think you are ever going to pick that up as malware at all. But I did look at the site you mentioned in Google Chrome, and in IE9. First thought was maybe Chrome suppresses it, but that would be contrary to trying to convince you that their AdSense or IntelliTXT is "helping" you.
What I did find in Chrome was
"Google Chrome's connection attempt to ad-apac.doubleclick.net was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
Since I don't have ad blockers in Chrome or IE, that tells me that my hosts file is doing its job, you can draw you own conclusions. There is something similar displayed in IE, but I can't read what was there because the font-size was too big. for the space. In Firefox with "Adblock Plus" extension it is all wiped out. The hosts file works across the entire system but is directed at blocking malware sites more than advertising. "Adblock Plus" is very good at blocking ads and can do its blocking with more generic filters, and can block a lot of malware from coming in but it can't block at the system level that a hosts file can.
In IE although I can only see "It appea" because the font is too large and text does not wrap it does actually say "It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet."
I would certainly suggest installing "Adblock Plus" extension and the "Easylist (USA)" filter subscription -- links are in the links previously provided, and installing the hosts file as well also in the links.
It takes a bit more work to install and maintain a hosts file but the directions should be clear enough.

  • Everytime I use Firefox it stopes responding. I can I get it to stop doing that ?

I have been using internet exporer because everytime I use Firefox when it starts to load a page, I get a message telling me that Firefox is not responding. How can I stop this from happening so I can use Firefox all the time?

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • How do I stop my whole laptop freezing when I use Firefox to visit a site that uses Java aplets?

For the last few weeks, whenever I've used Firefox to visit a trusted site that uses Java aplets, I've got a warning advising me to update Java. But when I check Java, it tells me I already have the most up to date version. However, as of today, whenever I visit the same trusted site my whole laptop freezes - cursor disappears, everything stops. I can't even use Restart - I have to manually disconnect the power. The same happens when I attempt to access Java via the Control Panel (to uninstall) - the moment the cursor hovers over Java, everything freezes and I have to disconnect power. I'm using Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit. HELP!!

Potentially unsafe versions of the Java plugin are "Click to Play" blocked, meaning that you have to click to activate Java for each site. See the [[How to enable Java if it's been blocked]] article for more information.
'''Note:''' To make sure that your Java plugin is working, you can visit the test pages listed in the article, [[Use the Java plugin to view interactive content on websites]]. If an "Activate Java" message box appears, click inside the box to activate the Java plugin.
When you see the "Activate Java" message box, simply click it to load the Java content normally.
    <br><br>
    [[Image:Fx24-JavaActivate]]
If there is no visible area to activate Java content in the page, click the red plugin icon in the address bar. In the message panel that opens, choose "Allow Now" to enable Java content temporarily.
    <br><br>
    [[Image:Fx24-JavaAllowNow]]
    <br><br>
The next time you visit the site or any other that uses Java you will see this message again.
If you want to always activate Java for a particular site, you can use the "Allow and Remember" option shown above.
After activating Java, you may also see a "Security Warning" dialog box, asking you to confirm that you want to run Java. This warning comes from Java itself, not from Firefox.
<b>NOTE: </b> After following the above steps, your computer may freeze for around one minute while the Java program is loaded.
Does this solve your problem? Please report back soon.

I have used Firefox for years and it has been great until a few days ago. Now when I try to open it, the homepage from a few days ago opens, but the green bar on the lower right fills in about 95%. On the lower left it says "transferring data from l1.yimg.com but it freezes there. If I click on anything, it says (not responding) on the upper left. I have uninstalled Firefox twice and redownloaded it and the exact same thing happens. Please help me. Thank you, Dave Schumer
