I used to back up on time capsule, but suddenly it can't connect to it now

i have an old apple time capsule which i used to connect to, but not for back up
recently i bought the brand new apple time capsule, it connected to it & made several backups until Nov 19th, but now the mac can't connect to the time capsule, even that the light signal is showing as green
attached is an image for the airport utility situation showing the current status
help me how can i reconnect to it & get my files backed up like before
note, the time capsule below is the one which i would like to connect to, even if i had to forget the old time capsule i don't mind
thanks

The first thing I would recommend is to change the base station name on both Time Capsule base stations to something a lot simpler. (No offense intended, but some connection issues are related to long names that have spaces and/or special characters in them.)
I would suggest something like: TCn for the 802.11n Time Capsule and TCac for the 802.11ac one.
Give this a try to see if it resolves the issue you are having.

  • I have copied my iTunes library to my time capsule. I am trying to point the iTunes to use the file within the time capsule but it does not show up. However I see the file when i open it thought the finder. Please assist.

    Hi,
    I will apprecite your help.
I find the copied file to time capsule though finder bt not when I open the pointer.
    can anyone help?
    Regards

No I have not watched a video to move iTunes.
You are trying to convince me that the video is correct.. but you are having issues..
I tend to consider Apple's documentation superior .. not that they always get it right.
If it doesn't work we need more info.
    Is this Mavericks?
Is the youtube video using Mavericks.. ?? If not then I suspect your problem is due to poor networking in Mavericks.
Ensure you follow the rules for SMB networking..
All names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Try manually mounting the hard disk in Finder via Go, Connect to Server.. make sure the TC is mounted before you try to connect to the library.
You will have constant problems because the TC is unsuitable for iTunes.

  • Time capsule visible in finder can't connect to TC drives

upgraded to yosemite on mac book pro. I can see TC in finder and finder shows my TC drive but when I click on that drive to see the files it says the drive isn't available. As a consequence Time machine won't back up either. I have reset the TC and unplugged it turned it back on. Sometimes it will then work but then stops letting me access the drive. Wifi is all ok.

    Try resetting TM as well
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But I highly recommend along with that a factory reset of your TC.. change all names to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg base station name.. TCgenx (use actual gen number for x) and TCwifi for wireless name.
All passwords should be pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
Then load the TC into finder as above.. then finally rediscover the disk and setup TM again to this new location.
It will say it is going to start a new backup but will find the old backup when it starts.
BTW.. I also have made a strong recommendation lately to use Carbon Copy Cloner (or any of those backup 3rd party utilities) to a USB drive as a failsafe for when TM is actually needed and does not work.. CCC can create a bootable clone of your current hard disk.. which makes it exact replica and easy peasy to test.. you simply boot off it.

  • Using network sharing on Macbook as router, but my ipod can't connect to the internet even though it can connect to wifi

Hi there, recently I've been trying to use my macbook as a router by turning on network sharing.
I'm sharing my connection through PPPoe.
It worked great for my 3DS and I was able to play online flawlessly
(unfortunately I don't have any other mobile device so I could only test this on my 3DS and ipod touch
But my ipod touch 4th gen, while it is able to connect to wifi with a strong bar, I cannot access the internet via web browsers and some of the apps.
It always gives me the 'cannot connect to internet' message.
What further puzzles me is that I can receive, update, and check my mail perfectly fine.
    I've already tried the following:
    1) unplugging and replugging my modem
    2) forgetting the network on my ipod and re-access it
    3) resetting network setting on ipod
    4) tweaking with the internet sharing setting like trying different channels and different types of security
    5) turning off and on my ipod, and turning off and on the wifi on my ipod
Anyway, I'm really stumped and I hope someone can help me figure this out.
Any help will be gladly appreciated.

oh I'm not actually using a router, I'm using my macbook pro as a wifi router by turning on network sharing.
And I'm sharing the connection through PPPoe
    ...unless, of course, I'm totally misunderstanding your question @@;
    I'm a complete tehcno noob =__=;

  • Older Macbook connects to Time Capsule, but not really

Problem: My wife's Macbook (Intel Core Duo) is able to connect to my new Time Capsule, but it quickly loses its connection. It doesn't really disconnect though - it still says that it is connected with full reception, but there is no internet, or time machine, and I can't even ping the router.
The router logs show that she is still connected though, because they don't say "Disassociated with station" until she turns airport off.
There are definitely a lot of wireless networks around here, but I don't think interference is the issue, since many other computers are working fine. Her computer can connect to some of the other routers just fine. She could also connect to my old router just fine.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
When that happens, if you open the Network panel of System Preferences, select the AirPort connection item on the left, click the "Advanced" button, then the "TCP/IP" tab, do you see reasonable values for the several fields?
It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until it works again:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    4) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    5) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.

  • Time machine has stopped backing up to time capsule. message is that sparse bundle is in use

Time machine suddenly stopped backing up to time capsule returning this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/xxnymacbooknamexx MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Complex procedure that will almost always solve this bug:
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • Cannot back up to time capsule using time machine on new MacBook

Have a time capsule that was seamlessly backing up my previous MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. Recently got a new MacBook Pro running Yosemite. After a horrendous file migration using migration assistant from my Time Machine backup (non Apple programs were crashing after migration), I erased the MacBook hard drive, reinstalled Yosemite, installed non Apple apps from original disks and transferred files from my old Mac manually (drag and drop). Now everything works well on the new MacBook except for back ups via Time Machine to my Time Capsule. Airport Utility can find the Time Capsule and Time Machine starts a back up but it stops and produces an error that ends in ".sparsbundle" could not be accessed (error null)"

Hmmm that is one of our old errors.
Haven't seen that one for a while which suggests one of you apps might be a problem.
Look at  C17 in particular here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Although the error codes have changed the basic reason for the error can be the same.
It can also just be a network error.
It is most important if you want to preserve the old backup.. that you make sure you still have enough space. and the new computer has a completely different share name to the old one.
Look at the reference and it has some info about names.. these are vital to get Yosemite to work properly as Apple have changed default protocols between SL and Yosemite.
I would even go further and say.
    1. Factory reset the TC.
    2. Redo the setup via yosemite version airport utility.. but do not use the apple recommended names.. use extremely short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    3. Use only WPA2 Personal security with pure alphanumeric mixed case and number password.
Tell me if you still have issues as there is some other stuff that might help.
    What gen is the TC?
    What firmware is it running?

  • Can I use apple TV on home network with time capsule or Airport Xtreme without being connected to the internet?

I'm wondering if I can use Apple TV to play movies and slide shows on my TV, play music over my sound system and print from my devices (Iphone 4S, iPad and MacBook pro 2011) by using an Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule (to back up the devices) if those devices are not connected to the internet. Can anyone advise pls? Reason for this is that I work on a moving ship and don't have an internet connection to speak of for much of the time (and if I do it's a wireless system that I need to pay by the minute and that is too slow to support the Apple TV), but would all the same like to create a wireless environment where my devices can interact with each other. I seem to get conficting info and a rep at the apple store in Honolulu told me that you cannot use Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule without an internet connection (it was busy, he may have misunderstood my question).
    Looking forward to your input.

Don't try to home share it.. as that is dependent on using Apple ID.
Just airplay to the ATV.. iTunes: Using AirPlay
The movie should play exactly as your doing music.. but get rid of the whole home share if that is causing issues.. there is no mention of needing home share in the above..
If you still have issues you might need to do it other ways.. like export the movie from itunes.. and play it using vlc which should allow you to stream it to the apple TV using airplay.
That is a bit tricky and I have not used that setup but it should work.
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/23412/can-i-stream-any-video-played-wit h-vlc-player-to-apple-tv
If you have a hunt around you should find it fairly easy to do.. but straight airplay should work.. there is a very recent update to ATV which might help it with airplay.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • Time Machine Won't Back Up to Time Capsule

I have an iMac 11.2 which was working really well with Time Machine and a 500GB Time Capsule when I was using Moutain Lion.  I then Update my machine to Mavericks (10.9.1) and my problems started.  It wiped everything in my backup and tried to start a new one.  So far it has stalled either in the prep phase or has managed start but is extremely slow - it took over a week to back up 300GB, but could not complete the last 50GB because it kept getting a sparsefile error.  I have tried the following in isolation or in combination :-
    1/  Deleting the plist file
2/  Running disk utility on the sparse file - no issues found
3/  Backing up in safe mode
4/  Deleting the hard drive content and starting again
5/  Backing up through my LAN rather than WAN - can't even find the drive.
I have thought about buying a new Time Capsule, but I cannot be sure the problem lies with my current one.  If anybody has any ideas they would be gratefully received.  If not then I can only hope Apple read this and they do something to restore my faith in their operating system.
    Many thanks

Before you do anything else, if you now have no current backup, back up all data to a USB hard drive.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Is there a way to use spare space on Airport Time Capsule as normal external hard drive?

A friend uses a hard drive with Time Machine for backup, but also has need for an external hard drive to hold a large number of photos that are filling up her computer's hard drive.  Hers isn't an Airport Time Capsule but I have one that is.  So that raised a two part question:
    1. Can her external drive used with Time Machine somehow also be used to store many of her photos (sort of a second iPhoto library) to let her to offload them?
    2. Can an Airport Time Capsule be used that way? (Mine is 2 TB but my hard drive is 500 GB.)
    Just curious.  Thanks.

Can her external drive used with Time Machine somehow also be used to store many of her photos (sort of a second iPhoto library) to let her to offload them?
    Not sure if I understand.
To keep things simple, let's just say she has an image library on her Mac it might be iPhoto or another library.
Time Machine is backing up the image library to the external hard drive. So, the "original" version of the image library is on her Mac, and Time Machine is making a backup copy on the external hard drive.
If you move the image library to the external drive....Time Machine has nothing to back up....and the only copy of the image library will be on the external hard drive.
If the external drive has a problem.....she has lost all of her images since there are no other copies of the image library on another drive.
Is this what you are asking about?  Do you see the danger here?
Can an Airport Time Capsule be used that way? (Mine is 2 TB but my hard drive is 500 GB.)
Yes it could, but the same dangers would apply.
Or, maybe I am not understanding what you are asking?

My 'old' files have been backed up onto time capsule (Leopard), I have upgraded to Lion (thro snow leopard) and now checking back to retosre some old files i can't see or access beyond the date I upgraded to Lion? Help please?

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17
