I usually use my laptop plugged in. How should I store my battery?

Hi,
I just bought a new MacBook pro 13". I usually use my computer plugged in at home. I use it for work and use it this way all day and sometimes leave it on 24/7.
My concern is if I should keep the battery in place in the the laptop, or remove it? I ask because in my old PowerBook 12 inch I kept the battery in it and seldom used it. That battery seemed to die really fast, and after a couple years would only hold a charge for about 5 minutes.
Maybe that was just a problem with the battery in that model, but I wonder if it had anything to do with leaving it in the computer and not using it.. Basically always charging.

Yes, it did. That battery's premature failure was caused, not by leaving it in the computer, but by *never using it.* It doesn't matter whether the battery is in the computer or out of it — it will die young if it isn't used regularly. So leave it in place (to allow your computer to run at full speed), but unplug the AC adapter and use your MBP on battery power for an hour or two every day or two to give the battery the regular light exercise it needs. You can leave the charger plugged in, as you cannot overcharge...charging automatically stops when your battery is full. Once every 2 ~ 3 months, its a good idea to drain the battery to about ~ 40%, then recharge to full. Otherwise, you can charge whenever you like & leave connected whenever you like.
Try to avoid full battery discharges, Lithium batteries don't like that & frequent full discharge/recharge cycles will eventually kill your battery.

  • Media browser - How should I store a movie to be replayed on my computer?

Under iMovie>Share>Media browser, that window says "This allows you to view your project in iMovie even when the original content is unavailable." Does this mean I can delete the project or original clips and still see the movie I put together?
If not, what does it mean?
I'd like to keep a copy of the iMovie I've created somewhere on my computer (or an external disk drive) so I can see it at better resolution than DVD can provide. At the same time I want to delete all the source clips, photos, music that went into it to free up space, clear directories, etc. How should I store the movie?

It would be safest to store it in iTunes.
You can store it in Media Brower also, but if you edit your movie at all, the Media Browser copy gets deleted, because it assumes you will want to re-share your movie. The copy you Shared to iTunes will not be automatically deleted.
When you share to iTunes, a copy is automatically shared with Media Browser.
If you prefer, you can use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and name a folder to store your movie.
It is then possible to go to iTunes Preferences and uncheck the box that automatically adds new files to iTunes. You can then drag the movie into iTunes, but it will only have a link to your folder. This is how I do it so I don't end up with multiple copies, and I can see my movies in a single folder.

  • How should I store files (nef, dng, other)?

As a new user of CS5, I would like to know how most experts save images.  Right now, I load nef (Nikon raw)  images from the camera to my Windows PC using "get photos from camera" in Bridge.  I then edit some images using Camera Raw and (sometimes) using Photoshop with layers. I also add metadata of my own.   I would like to have one file for each image if possible.  I just do not like to have  a lot of different versions hanging around.  I am not concerned about backup because I backup the entire PC daily.  I do want to preserve all potentially useful data from the camera though.  When needed, I use Save to create jpegs for external use, e.g. for Shutterfly or (using different settings) for Web use.  I usually save these separate from the original nef files and their companion files.  When a file has been edited only by Camera Raw, I notice that it remains a nef file.  When it is edited by Photoshop, it gains a companion psd file, and when metadata is added it gains a companion xmp file.  I keep these nef files and their companion psd and xmp files toegether in the same folder sorted such that the three are adjacent.  Is this the best way to store these images?
Incidentally, the Photoshop Essentials course from Lynda.com and the Adobe Help documentation do not cover the above companion files adequately in my view.  Can you comment on this point?

Since you asked how others do it, I'll describe what I do:
I save all my original files by Year \ Month \ Occasion on my computer on a 2 TB RAID 0 - based hard drive partition.  These include raw images, JPEG images, and scans (saved as .PSD files).  All are online (about half a terabyte of data total) so I can easily access what I need when I need it.
I back these files up to two different external USB MyBook drives in two different parts of my house, as well as to DVD (more recently blu-ray DVD for the added storage).  I do incremental backups that ever-accumulate, so I'm protected from accidental erasure, as well as full system image backups that can be used to completely restore each of my entire systems.
I never overwrite my original files, and I even go so far as avoiding using Camera Raw to open JPEGs because it will write metadata back into JPEG files.  And I never write any editing products back into my original photo folders.  This helps avoid accidents.  Photoshop CS5 now actually has a setting one can configure that will instruct it to remember a different default for Saves as for Opens.  I like that.
Usually, for most uses, I just reprocess my original file if I want a print, or to use a copy online, etc.
For complex Photoshop projects, I save PSD files in separate folders from my original photo files, named for the project.
Regarding making backups, I suggest this mantra:  "Don't invite disaster, but there's nothing wrong with preparing for it."
    Hope this helps!

  • How should I store and handle all my photos?

I have an iphone and ipad. I take all my photos on my iphone. Is there a safe way to store all of them? In the past I had a desktop and stored all photos on a cd. Now I think that's a bit outdated perhaps and I don't have a desktop anymore.

I wish to second the other two replies you have received so far in an effort to show how right they are.
Neither the iPhone nor the iPad are good place for long term storage of your photos.
My suggestion is to get them to a computer as quickly as possible and then backup them up from there.
Only after that is you want them on a mobile device, you can move them back again.
As to all of the rumors that you hear about the death of the computers, I think it is a lot of hype. The devices like the iPhone and iPad are nowhere near ready to replace then yet.

  • How should I keep my battery while I am away?

I will be away from 34 days and I wanted to know the best way to keep my MacBook battery "new". I was not sure if I should keep it plugged in, unplugged with a full battery, unplugged dead, or any other way. Thanks for anyone's help!

Turn off the computer (complete shutdown.) You can leave it connected to the AC adapter or not. The latter will save a small amount of electricity.
For long term storage the battery should be discharged to about 40% of full capactiy.

  • How do I use my Mac plugged into power?

Hey guys, I usually use my laptop at home, plugged into power, for 3-4 hours a day (at night, most of the time), always with full charge.
I'm aware of the battery calibration and that Apple suggests that we do it once a month and everything.
My doubt is, during the period when I'm not using my Mac (during daytime, when I'm at work), what's preferable:
    1. That I leave it plugged into the power, so the charger keeps the green light and the battery level?
    OR
    2. That I unplug it from power when I'm not using and then, when I get home to use, I plug it and use?
I've been doing the second way, but I'm afraid that during the hours that the laptop is off and unplugged from power, that it might lose some battery capacity and then, when I plug it again, the charger start to charge the battery.
Anyway, the way I've been doing, when I connect the charger, it's always the green light, it never starts to charge, although the battery level never exceeds 99% ( but it says "fully charged").
    So, what's preferable?
    Thanks!

There is no reason to leave the computer on battery power if you can connect it to an AC power source. Leave it connected to the charger unless you need to use it on battery power.

  • How to Fetch & Store Richtext in MySql

    Dear Friends ,
I am Developing a System in Java - Swings , I am Using MySql as Backend .
How can I store & retrieve Richtext in MySql.
I am Using TextPane in Swing as the RichText Tool in Java .
I collected Some information & which says to use BLOB / CLOB Objects to store Rich text .
It will be Helpfull for me if you give me Ideas & Suggestions in this regard.
I need the ways & means for storing & retrieving Richtext in MySql.
    Thanking you

You can store RichText as BLOBs in the database. Take a look at the PreparedStatement class and the following API's:
void setBinaryStream(int parameterIndex, InputStream x, int length)
    void setBlob(int i, Blob x)

  • How do I change my Ipad to access Itunes store in a different country than the one I usually use and have my account with?

I usually use the Itunes application on my Ipad in FRence and use the French Itunes store. I am now in Cyprus and after synchronising my Ipad there I now can access the US Itunes Store but my purchases are refused as my account is with the French Itunes store.  How do I either open an account with the US Itunes store or revert to the French Itunes store on my Ipad?

synchronising is not the problem i think, you need a new US apple id. i only have a malaysian credit card but i have separate ids for US UK and Malaysia. i have travelled to these 3 countries and have home adresses in each country but for buying stuff, I use an iTunes store card instead of a credit card cos its easier. you do not need a credit card that must have billing address from the same country as the iTunes store. So I would suggest if you are currently based in the US go the nearest apple store buy an iTunes store card (i buy in multiples of US$100 with a credit card) and use your current US home address as the US iTunes address.
so log off your french iTunes store account, create new US apple id for your iTunes store account using your current US address and then redeem your itunes store card and voila you are set to go. (did i mention you will also need a new separate email address for the new apple id) i have one each from gmail, yahoo and hotmail for each separate id.
the only drawback is that when you want to do an update for the apps that you buy from the different iTunes store, you must log in to that iTunes store account ie if you buy an app from the US store you must log in and update with the US store id and to update the apps from the French store you must log off from the US store and log in again with the french store id.
hope this makes sense to you.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!
