  • My MacBook Pro 15 won't sleep. I'm wanting to find out why.

    I have a late 2006 model MacBook Pro 15" (MacBookPro2,2). Running OS 10.6.8. Over the last 6 -8 months my computer will not sleep on it's own. I either have to menu sleep it or close it. It will sleep then, but not if I just leave it alone. Is there a way to monitor the processes and see what is keeping it awake. I assume I installed something that continues to work behind the scenes and will not let the computer rest.

    Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
    Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
    Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
    If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
    Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
    If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
    If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

    am working on a very important project for about a week now then i did some updates on it that took me almost an hour and a half after i save i don't find the file then gladly i found the last auto save that didnt include the last work i did but this is not the first time and its sooooo annoying please if you may., do something

    If you just hit Save its saves in the project file you are working on.
    I would not rely on auto save.
    Best is to also do a Save a Copy to another drive after each edit session.
    And please write the punctuation. Very difficult for a non-English person to read.

  • 5th generation iPod Touch speaker is not working with music and apps, but the alarm sound goes off fine. Why?

    I have a 5th generation iPod Touch and it got a small amount of water in it around the speaker. When I tried to see if my music would play through it, it couldn't. But, when I tried my alarm to make sure I could still hear it, you could. The sound was fine from the alarm, not as loud as it used to be but I could still hear it. Why doesn't the sound work with my music and apps? Also, would I be able to exchange it if I have a warranty?

    Could be the charger, cable or the iPad.
    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    And this - Unplug the charger from the iPad and then replug. May resume charging.
    Or - Recalibrate the battery. See link below.
    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging).     When I checked the plug ins there are some that are not active. How do I know which ones to make active? When I clicked on research it just took me to a google search with a lot of different site to go to. Is there a way or a place to find out which ones should be activated? When I go to a site general don't understand what they are talking about. There were some that I thought I should activate, but don't want to do that with out checking. Last time I did something with out checking had lots and lots of problems. (some REALLY GREAT PEOPLE on this site helped me get things working again) Want to avoid that situation if possible. Thanks

    You need to go to add-ons, and when it opens up, there are a list of things to the side, and then click extensions.

    I am having to write this email in work, whilst working nights, using a poor 3G signal so bear with me please!
    On 17th October our broadband stopped working. It can be very intermittent so when it still wasn't working on Monday 20th I reported it. After spending over an hour on the phone discussing ADSL' s and phone sockets the person on the other end checked the line and then announced that there was a problem at the exchange and that an engineer would have to call with me. They could only offer an appointment in 7 days time so I took it.
    A few days later we had a message to say that the engineer would not need to call & that the fault would be fixed on the 27th. It wasn't but since then we've made and received a number of calls but nothing has happened and we still have no broadband.
    The calls have fallen into a pattern, I don't hear from BT so I call and we go through the rigmarole of being told to check ADSL's & cables so I try and explain that these have been checked and then I'm told that the operator will check with Openreach. A check is made and we're told that there is a problem under the road and it needs to be dug up and that someone will phone with an update. This doesn't happen and it all starts again
    Today we had a call from Openreach who asked us if our telephone line was fixed. When my husband said that it was our broadband the man said that he had no record of that just a faulty phone line.
    We seem to be going round in circles. The mobile signal at home is too weak to use the Internet, hence this written tonight using a slighly better signal.
    Can anyone tell me please how to get a diminutive answer from BT/Openreach. It's been 4 weeks now and I'm losing the will to live!
