I've downloaded Elements 12, trial edition, twice but it does not automatically open

I could not not find the check box, prior to download, or following download giving the automatic download feature. What a waste of time!!

As an alternative to using the download assistant, try the direct route...

When I click on a picture, Photoshop Elements 12 does not automatically open (as it did when I used previous versions Photoshop Elements 4 and 9). I can't even right-click (Windows) on the picture and choose Open With and specifiy Photoshop Elements 12. I have called Adobe several times (Case No. 185140584) and they keep saying it has been sent up to senior management and they will call me back with a solution - but to no avail! No return calls and I still can't really use the Product I paid for and downloaded. The only way I can open up a picture to edit it is to open Photoshop Elements 12 and then then click "Open" and then search for the picture on my hard drive (which takes a lot more time! I did not experience this difficulty at all with versions 4 or 9!

You failed to say which Windows system you have - I can get the "Open With" to work on my Windows 7 64bit system.
When you try to set up the "Open With", are you setting the correct target program?
It's the green one (not the red one) in the above image.
Once you have selected that program, make sure you set it as default so that a double click will open the photo in the editor.

You may need to put the iPad into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad.
If you haven't synced to a computer them (from here) :
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

I don't know exactly what they said b/c they are nolonger on my screen. It said something to the effect of "incomplete dowload, there was an eror during the dowload of *Song*".
The songs purchased were showing in my purchased list with an "exclamation point" by them, which I believe indicates the download was incomplete. I restarted iTunes and the songs are no longer on my "Purchased list".
I was still charged after restarting iTunes

It might not be compatible with the iPad or the iOS version you're running on your iPad (you can check the app store to find out). You also have to have the same Apple ID in Settings>iTunes & App Stores and have Apps turn to On under Automatic Downloads.

Illustrator won't open on my computer.
I've downloaded the free trial of Illustrator, when I go to open the program the Illustrator logo appears on my start menu for a second and then disappears again and nothing happens - no error message comes up.
I am using Windows 7.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, restarting my computer, signing in and out of my adobe account and changing the compatibility mode, nothing has worked so far.

I have done several "attempted downloads, and see the full file download, typically taking 30 minutes to complete, and then something goes wrong.
I am happy to suspend AV and FW software, but would like to know if it is a good fix or not first?

Thanks for the information. I am a bit nervous about the method because I get a "serious" warning when I put the command in the URL. Also, I wonder if you know the answer to this: Someone/Firefox pushed an upload tab to me. That is the best way I can explain what happened. Now, sometimes I get an ! in a triangle, sometimes I get an outdated message with the Firefox logo in place of the ! and sometimes it does not show an icon indicating the program is out of date. This only works if you add her account as your primary accoun on your device and enable syncing "Documents & Data" in "Settings >iCloud".
