I've given up on Safari, it's worthless.

A browser is only as good as the webpages that actually work with it. Safari has great intentions, but what's the point in having this great browser if so many webpages are designed with IE and Firefox in mind? Shoot, as flawed as IE is, at least you don't have to worry if a webpage will run on it.
I guess it's back to Firefox I go.

Whatever problems you are having with Safari 3.1 are not universal, and can often be rectified by checking a few things:
1. Did you install the correct version for your operating system?
2. Did you follow the recommended procedure for undertaking updates and upgrades? If you are not sure, please ask.
3. Do you have any third party 'enhancements' that may not play well (yet) with Safari 3.1? If you are not sure, please ask.
4. Have you tried what in many cases cures the problem, namely repairing permissions and then re-running the latest Combo Update for your operating system, and restarting your Mac?
5. Have you tried putting these in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
You may decide that the only solution for you, despite having gone through the steps outlined above, is to revert to Safari 3.0.4. Unfortunately, downgrading Safari from 3.1 to 3.0.4 isn't a simple process. The Safari installer modifies a number of files other than the Safari application itself, including WebKit and others. This may have implications for other applications like Mail, iTunes and various widgets. You will also lose the security fixes in the 3.1 upgrade. But here is one way to do it:
If you don't have it already, download Pacifist from:
http://www.charlessoft.com/
and install it.
Open Pacifist, and drag the icon of the OS 10.4.11 Combo Updater (if you are using Tiger), or the OS 10.5.2 Combo Updater (if you are using Leopard) to the Pacifist window.
Select /Applications/Safari.app from the list. Use the "Install" button at the top of the Pacifist window to force an installation of Safari.
Next, select /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework and install it in the same manner. Restart your Mac.
N.B. Repair permissions and restart both before and after installation.
But you may care to read about what the Safari 3.1 update included:

  • I've given up on Safari.  Thanks for being there Firefox.

Love Apple products but nothing is perfect.  I had to stop using Safari for my online banking with USAA, the most awesome bank ever, because Safari would not allow for full functionality with the USAA site.  I worked with USAA developers for more than a year but have been unable to make Safari work.  I was fine switching to Firefox just for USAA, however after losing my bookmarks on my iPhone with Yosemite I have hidden my Safari App.  Give me the ability to sync bookmarks with my secondary iCloud account, and fix the USAA web site functionality, and I am happy to switch back.  We use a family iCloud account so can sync up all calendars.  Then I had to get a separate one so could sync my contacts.  Now am forced to Firefox to sync bookmarks.  Contrary to the App Ratings, Sync for Firefox seems to work fine and only $.99.

  • AppleScript: Activate the frontmost Safari and run Javascript.

I have the applescript like this below:
    on run argv
set pid to item 1 of argv
set fileLocation to item 2 of argv
      tell application "System Events"
set theprocs to every process whose unix id is pid
      repeat with proc in theprocs
set the frontmost of proc to true
      using terms from application "Safari"
      set theScript to "document.querySelector(\"input[name='fileField']\").click()"
tell (application "Safari" whose frontmost is true) to do JavaScript theScript in current tab of first window
      end using terms from
      tell proc
      keystroke "G" using {command down, shift down}
      delay 2

set the frontmost of proc to false
      end repeat
      end tell
    end run
The above code, set the frontmost of the given pid to true. The pid given will be of Safari. It will bringing the given pid of safari to front most. But after that this breaks in the line:
tell (application "Safari" whose frontmost is true) to do JavaScript theScript in current tab of first window
    with exception:
hacking.scpt: execution error: Can’t get application "Safari" whose frontmost of it = true. Access not allowed. (-1723)
    Where I'm making mistake?

    Hi,
you're right. The script does not compile. I don't know the reason, perhaps Shane reads the thread and knows the answer. Macscripter.net may be a good point for posting this.
A workaround: Create the whole ID-Tellblock as string and do a vanilla run script command.
    tell application "Finder"
        activate
        set myApps to {"CS3", "CS4", "CS5.5"}
set selectedApp to choose from list myApps with prompt "Choose Application:" with title "Launch Application"
if the result is not false then
set myApp to "Adobe InDesign " & selectedApp
            set myFile to "Applications:" & myApp & ":Scripts:Scripts Panel:Sample.jsx"
        end if
    end tell
    set myString to "tell application " & "\"" & myApp & "\"" & return ¬
        & "do script alias " & "\"" & myFile & "\"" & " language javascript" & return ¬
        & "end tell"
    run script myString
    It runs here.

  • Safari - server has stopped working

I have tried the advice given to get safari to work but no joy. (deleting the app and restart. Also holding both home and sleep down to restart.) When I try to search I get "safari could not open this page because the server stopped working". How do I get it to work again and search??

    Hi Friend,
Can your iPad sends iMessages, Facetime calls or something through the internet?
If yes, try to reset your network settings, double check the Restrictions settings, check the Safari settings...
If not, you have some problem with iinternet connection. Look at airplane mode is off, if your iPad recognizes WiFi connection or not, check the Restrictions settings, if other device also faces the same problem with internet connection
    If still not working:
    1. Go to the Settings App.
    2. Tap on Wi-Fi
    3. Your chosen network will be ticked. Tap on its white arrow over a blue circle button to its right
    4. Tap on DNS
    5. Replace the current information with 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4
    6. Try visiting a website with Safari to see if this works.
    Hope something here helps

  • Some observations concerning Safari hanging

Many postings in this discussion group report that Safari hangs frequently. When that happens, you see the spinning polychrome ball, and you're more or less obliged to force quit Safari and start all over again. I experience that frequently. Many people have given up on Safari, and migrated to Firefox.
Following, is a specific report of ONE particular way that Safari hangs, in my experience. I'm providing this report in case it will help someone find out how to prevent Safari hanging.
When I copy URLs from IE6 in Virtual PC and then paste them into the address bar in Safari on the Mac side, the URL in the address bar looks good until I hit the "return" key. At that time, the three characters "%00" appear, appended at the end of the URL. More often than not, Safari cannot then find the desired web site. Occasionally Safari does find the web site.
Alternatively, after I hit the "return" key and see the URL with the three additional characters appended, sometimes Safari hangs" - i.e. Safari effectively freezes (apart from the spinning polychrome ball). The only remedy then is to force quit Safari.
I wonder if this is related to all the multitude of postings in this discussion group about Safari hanging!! If so, it might yield an important clue as to the reason for the hanging of Safari.
By the way, when I email URLs from Virtual PC to myself on the Mac side - that works fine. After receiving the URLs in the Mac, I can either click on them in the email message or copy them and paste them into the address bar of Safari, and Safari then performs beautifully.
Can anyone use this information to get the hanging bug out of Safari?

Hi Mike...for your question #3, I found a couple discussion threads about this issue which appears to be 'possibly' either a software glitch or Apple's way of discouraging people from listening to free music and forced to purchase music.
Anyhow here are the two discussion threads:

  • Screenshot of safari bookmarks

I have completely given up on Safari. I have tried everything but am unable to add a bookmark without Safari crashing. I am swiching to Firefox but like to compile a list of my current bookmarks to import to Firefox. Any suggestion on how to do this?

From your Safari menu bar top of your screen click File > Export Bookmarks
Save that file to yuor desktop for easy access.
For Firefox >  Import Bookmarks and personal data from another browser
unable to add a bookmark without Safari crashing.
Post a crash report. Might be able to fix Safari for you...
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • Safari broken revisited again

Been gone a while, back now...
And, I still can't get Safari 3.2.3 to work - I can't quit (sometimes); I get the spinning beach ball and can't get beyond http://www in status bar (sometimes). I've poked around here and it seems I am not the only one with this problem.
I had given up on Safari but old habits die hard and I accidently clicked on its icon on the dock only to have the problems recur.
I am successfully using both Firefox and Camino with no issues. I love the control I have over cookies with them both, something "Safari Plus" gave me with v.3x (thanks, Klaus!), but which I understand has no equivalent in v4.
Just wondering, since 3.2.1 stopped working and I followed everyone's instructions to make it work to no avail, and then went to 3.2.3 and that didn't work either, is there ANY reason to try 4x? or do I just kiss Safari good bye? (ie is there any reason that I have to have Safari?)

    Hello again . . .
So sorry to hear of your recent problems.
As to the Kernel Panic screen (grey screen with restart warning),
If there's anything attached to you Mac with a cable, unplug it.
Other than an Apple Keyboard and Mouse.
Then see how things go from there . . .
Which Mac is it, by the way???
    Thanks for your concern ~Bee.
I asked a question about the start up problem in the G4 thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097097&tstart=0
I just referred to it here.
It's not a "Kernel Panic screen (grey screen with restart warning)," problem - I think! The chime doesn't chime, but everything else works fine at startup. No warnings, no grey blank screens...
" If there's anything attached to you Mac with a cable, unplug it. Other than an Apple Keyboard and Mouse. " All that's attached with USB, (besides keyboard which is attached to display) and my mouse is a UPS power supply, and my LaCie HD which is my startup drive - don't ask - that's just the way my system was reconfigured for me by the Apple store when I wanted to move up to Tiger - OS 9 runs on my internal HD and OSX is on the LaCie.
I'll disconnect the UPS and try again tomorrow. I'm scared to try tonight.
If we are going to discuss this issue further, could we do it at the place where I asked about it - the link above, so I don't get people upset for posting the same thing in 2 places.
    Thanks again for your concern.

  • Safari 5 will not operate JavaScriptCore.dll error

safari 5 will not operate due to JavaScriptCore.dll error message

    JavaScriptCore.dll
You're having trouble with an Apple Application Support dll there, Sheryl.
I'd try uninstalling both Safari and Apple Application Support, then reinstalling Safari (thus reinstalling Apple Application Support). I'd also take a few extra explicit precautions along the way, just in case.
For the XP technique see the following post. (It's given for a Safari 4.0.4 problem, but the technique is the same with a 5.0.)

  • Safari can't find the server "www"

    Hi
Could some one provide same help on this?
Safari is given this message "Safari can’t open the page “http://www.mydomain.net/” because Safari can’t find the server “www.mydomain.net”
If I remove 'www' the site woks fine, but the problem is that the rss does not work, gives me the same message. But if I remove again the 'www' from the rss url, mail recognize it immediately.
Is there anything I can do? How can I solve this?

  • Access to live radio on Safari with iPad

I cannot access live radio on given Websites on Safari with my iPad although I can easily with my MacBook Pro on the same websites. Anybody can explain why ? Setting problem ?

Those sites are probably Flash Sites which do not work on the iPad. There is no setting to change that.
Ther are many radio apps in the App Store, Pandora Radio, Tune in Radio, iHeart Radio. Look at some of them in the app store.

  • Alternative to Safari 5

The obvious point here is that Safari 5 isn't working. I'm one of those boring people who dutifully install the recommended Apple software updates, and I haven't installed any outside plug-ins or anything else. I have liked Apple over the years because I haven't had to be concerned with technical details (as I do with Microsoft at my office). I'm sure Apple is dealing with this problem, although I haven't seen any public announcements. But in the meantime, I installed Mozilla's Firefox, and it is working perfectly. I haven't given up on Safari yet, but for the time being, Firefox works.

    Hi!
A bit of an update. I have two computers both 2 weeks old now. My iMac was a replacement provided by Apple after 3 video card and or logic board failures on my previous iMac. My laptop unfortunately was a replacement for a 3 day old laptop that kept on overheating (thermal shutdown saved me!). I have had Mac's for 25 years these were my only problems. Apple had no hesitation in replacing both machines - that is what I call service!
Anyway. I have been trying a few things on my iMac whilst leaving the MacBook untouched so I have a baseline against which I can check Safari. Clearing caches and checking plugins (I had none) no help. However I did a verify permissions and repair permissions - no change in speed etc. compared to laptop on same webpage. Did it a second time just in case I had goofed it up and there is a very noticeable improvement. Maybe first time round I hit the "verify" twice and did not do a "repair". I guess most of you have already done this but thought I would feed it back anyway.

  • New router solved my Safari problems

This is just an FYI. I have had many of the problems with Safari (both v4 and v5) discussed here. Frequent hangs, occasional crashes, Flash crashing, etc, especially when visiting pages with Flash Content. Also, after a hang I would quit (or force quit) Safari, yet would still have temporary connectivity issues (e.g., unable to connect to internet through Safari, Firefox, dashboard, etc) that would last about 20 seconds before regular internet connectivity was restored. During this time, activity tracker wouldn't show any obvious processes that could account for this. However, I connect to the internet using a wireless router so this was one possibility.
I tried all the remedies chronicled here, including checking for add-ons/plug-ins, deleting plist, clearing Safari and Flash caches, deleting and reinstalling Flash, reinstalling Safari, open DNS, turning off DNS prefetching, etc. I struggled with this (and have been frustrated by it) for quite some time, and had almost given up on Safari. However, being an original Mac user (I remember being excited about upgrading my 128K to a 512K) I really didn't want to admit defeat.
Accessing Flash-rich pages through Safari seemed to cause the connectivity problems, but the problems seemed to persist even after quitting Safari. For this reason, I decided to try using a new wireless router. I had been using a Netgear WGR614v5 (from 2004), and I had updated the firmware. I now have a new router (Netgear WNDR3400, N600) and all of these problems are gone. The old router was otherwise working fine (on an older, non-Intel iMac, a Powerbook, my iPhone and a windoze machine running Windows 7) so the problem seems to be how Safari (or OS 10.6) interacts with the router or its driver. I can now relate to those who are very happy with Safari and its speed and reliability.
So if someone is having similar problems, perhaps this info could be useful. Or, if the problem was unique to just my machine, then (if nothing else) this was just a chance for me to vent.
Also, there are a few users on this forum who have been very helpful (even for a lurker). So a big shout-out to you folks (you know who you are) and the very patient help you provide here.

    Ditto what Bee said!
That is just the kind of really useful information based on user experience we need more of in the forums!
Please feel free to keep it coming!

  • Fan speed and CPU temp viewing Flash video in Firefox vs. Safari ?

My MacBook (two months old) running the latest Safari version (3.1) seems to be working unbelievably hard when viewing a flash video. The temps seem to cycle between the high 60s and mid 70s, and the fan blows at max speed constantly. On the other hand, when viewing the same flash videos using Firefox (2.0.0.12), there is only a slight boost in temp (high 50s to low 60s) and the fan speed hardly increases at all.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
Why would the flash player on one browser be so much more efficient than another (Safari seems to labor, while Firebox breezes along)?

    Thanks!
Well I guess the code in the Safari browser just wasn't well written. This is true even of the later version of Safari. It does work much better in FireFox, with no crazy heat-up or fan action.
I've pretty much given up on Safari now on everything by my iPhone and iPt, and only because I have no other choice.

  • Safari Flash Player

my flash player for safari is no longer working. when i reinstalled the flash player i only see the quicktime logo with a question mark over it. in the past i've had problems with flash, a video i would be watching streaming would skip frames and to correct this problem in the past was to reinstall adobe flash player. but for my current problem, i've uninstalled flash player then restarted my computer and reinstall flash and i still get the question mark. i've reseted safari and no luck. however flash works on firefox. is safari just completely worthless and move over to firefox? or do i need to reinstall safari? anything on this subject would help.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    First welcome to the discussions.
If you UnInstalled the Flash Player you will need Pacifist to reInstall it. Thats the reason you get a question mark.
Pacifist will allow you to extract and reinstall Safari from the Original Disc.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812
A little different aproach to your problem could be 2 things. It may be the program used to develop the video you are trying to view. At one time it required a user to have several different players downloaded to be able to view from different Videos form different sites. Windows Media Player, Quicktime,Realplayer, and Macromedia just to mention a few. As you notice on most will give you a speed choice as well for the best viewing from a Dial-up Connection, DSL, and Cable. If the wrong speed is selected it will also cause you problems. Hope something here has help explain it for you.

  • Safari 5.1 CustomUserAgent Not Working

My web application requires that I change the user agent in safari. By default, this is possible from the Develop menu. However, it only remains in effect until you quit Safari, making it worthless for my needs.
I have been relying on editing Safari's plist field "CustomUserAgent" and since upgrading to Safari 5.1 in Lion, the field has no affect on my user agent string as reported to websites I visit.
    Any ideas are good ones!

    Have you test this :
    - Close Safari application
    - open the Terminal application,
    - type :  defaults write com.apple.safari CustomUserAgent "Automatically Chosen"
If you want to see the parameters :
    > defaults read com.apple.safari | grep CustomUserAgent
