I've given up on Snow Leopard and gone to 10.5.8, and still have probs

While I was writing this post (in Safari on 10.5.8) Safari froze when I tried to save the page. So I'm rewriting it, groan.
Too many issues with SL have made it hard to do my work, writing etc. IE.,:
Word 2008 freezing, Force Quit just simply unable to to do its job with many programs, updates that may have fixed some probs too bloated to download with my limited broadband deal. Etc.
When the dust has settled for SL I'll get back to it.
After 30 years working with Apple products this has been my worst experience with OS software issues.
At least I have my trusty 17" G4 laptop on Tiger to go back to.
It'll all work out, I know and I will never give up my love of Mac gear.

Does the Mac meet the hardware requirements for Lion
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
If everything works perfectly then your data should be safe. I don't know about you but I am never going to trust my data to everything working perfectly so I always backup first.
The next step is to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and install it
Once you have upgraded to 10.6.8 so that you have the App Store for Lion then you can purchase and install Lion.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialog box so large I can't get to the eject card button.   I have to force quit Aperture.  How do I fix?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button.  Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture.  How do I fix?

I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button.  The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload.  It has never done that before.  It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open.  I have to force quit aperture.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

hello, I want to know if will lose my apps if I upgrade to Mavericks? I I have Snow Leopard, and I have not because I have fear of losing my apps

You will only lose Power PC apps.
To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mavericks.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Recently safari has been quit unexpectedly I've upgraded to snow leopard and I have the latest safari software. What can I do about it to rectify the problem?

Recently Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. I've dumped my cache several times and even upgraded to snow leopard.l I have the latest version of Safari 5.0.5. The situation has gotten quite annoying and been going on for about three weeks now. What can I do to fix this short of bringing it to someone?
I restart and it works fine for  awhile and then it quits again. I either restart and/or dump the cache AGAIN! This is getting quite tedious. I've even taken the battery out and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to stop the quitting.

  • I can't find the mac app store on my imac. i am running snow leopard, and i have run "update software" several times. what's up?

I am trying to upgrade to Lion. I need to go through Mac App store to buy it. I need to get the Mac App store icon in my dock. I have run Update Software several times, trying to get the Mac App store onto my iMac, but with no luck. It doesn't show up in the dock, it doesn't show up in Finder under Applications, and it doesn't show up when I search in Searchlight for App Store, Store, Mac App Store, etc. What am I doing wrong?

    I am running snow leopard
    James....
You arne't necessarily doing anything wrong.
Install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That should reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is finished installing.
You should see the App Store icon in the Dock and be able to access from your Apple menu also.
Make sure your Mac meet's Lion's requirements

  • I activated secure virtual memory on snow leopard and now have lost everything

Hi, wow I could use some help. I was curious and activated "secure virtual memory" in the security settings on my iMac 2.16 Ghz Intel core 2 duo and restarted. Now I can't access any of my files and the "users" folder won't open saying I don't have sufficient privileges even though I am not prompted for the administrator's password.  Every account seems to have reverted back to basic settings. When I try to open the finder I get a message saying:
"The home folder for user "-------" isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed. The home folder or Users folder may have been moved or deleted. If the home folder is located on the network, the server may be temporarily unavailable. If you continue to have problems, see your system administrator."
I have backups on an external hard drive with time machine. How can I restore my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

It appears I have resolved the issue on my own. I was able to change the permissions of the "Users" folder by right clicking and choosing "get info". I then was able to access the folder and saw that all of my information was still there. Whew!! And now that I've shut down and rebooted my desktop appears to be back to normal. I did hit the ? for information about the "secure virtual memory" option in security settings BEFORE I selected it and restarted, but the information about it was totally lacking so unfortunately this leads one to explore...

  • M1536DNF Duplex garbled mess, Lion, Snow Leopard and Win 7

I've had my M1536DNF for about a year now, everything has been fine, great printer, no issues whatsoever until recently.
I attempted to print some flight information, set it for 2 sided and thought nothing of it, went over to collect print job, the sides facing me are fine, the back side was almost entirely horizontal lines, some text did print top and bottom though. Exactly the same result on second attempt. As I was going away, I didn't have time to mess with it so I printed single sided and promptly forgot about it. This was with a Mac OSX Lion.
Month or so later, my partner was trying to print a document from her Win 7 laptop, same issues, multiple attempts and nothing useful on the back side. Transferred the files to another Mac - Snow Leopard and still same issues.
I've re-booted the printer, cleaned the printer, downloaded new drivers (which are not available for Lion yet so I don't know how this thing is working at all). Nothing seems to get it up and running again properly. Has something died on my printer or is this a software issue. I'm guessing hardware as the issue is 100% reproduceable from multiple machines, multiple operating systems.
At no point have I seen an error from the printer or print utility.

Scratch all of that. The issue is Chrome - the beta print panel seems to destroy the duplex side.
Turn it off with these instructions.

  • Mouse skipping- Wired and wireless, Snow Leopard and Lion

We purchased a new Mac Pro last year and from the beginning have had issues with the mouse skipping around while in use. Issue is intermittent. Exists whether using wired or wireless mouse and present in both of the two user profiles that we have set up. Initially we were running Snow Leopard, and now have upgraded to Lion - which hasn't made any difference. All updates have been installed.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM and trashing preferences. Hardward test resulted with: 4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController
Could an issue with the video controller be causing this?
I've read a lot of discussions with various mouse issues that are similar - yet no clear resolutions.
    HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP!
    Specs:
    Mac Pro - Mid 2010
    3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 EEC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

I plan to definitely have that checked out - but the machine is currently in high demand and if that is not related to the mouse issue, it will be tough to take it out of service at the time.
Do you have any idea if the video controller issue could cause this mouse issue?
    Thanks for the comment.

  • 64-Bit and 32-Bit: Snow Leopard and Windows 7

    Hi All:
I will eventually be dual booting Snow Leopard and Windows 7. I have never used Boot Camp before and have several questions, including one related to Boot Camp.
First, when installing 7, will I need to format the 7 partition, presumably NTSF.
Second, given my MBP's 64-bit architecture, will I be able to run 64-bit 7. I am aware, of course, that not many programs are available in 64-bit for either platform. Also, I know that the Snow Leopard renditions of all, or most, of the iLife programs will be 64-bit.
Does Leopard (and will Snow Leopard) run 32-bit programs in an emulation mode similar to the way 64-bit Vista/7 run 32-bit programs. In this regard, I assume, which surely must be the case, that OS X is a 64-bit program.

    hi donv,
    i run win7rc1 via bootcamp 32bit on mbp 17" 3.06ghz
and same, but 64bit on imac 3.06ghz.
    all works perfect, also apple's keyboard (brightness+-/sound +-/keyboardbcklight +-/eject ..
format is ntfs; backupable with winclone, also now (i have cloned from ssd to ssd).
apps run also in emulation, but where specified drivers are needed (e.g. for flashing ci-cards) 32bit are a must (therefore i have 32bit on my mbp).
partly i have boot camp 3.0 drivers (snowleo) in the mbp ..

  • Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
    So here's my dilemma:
    1.  Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on       the same "Fusion 5"?
    2.  Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
    3.  Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX  ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
    OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

    mende1
Thanks ... the "You have to purchase Snow Leopard Server" I knew about, and a few days ago I just ordered a copy from the Apple Store:
    Snow Leopard Server - Ordered at: 1-800-692-7753 ... OR ... 1-866-254-8313
I asked for Apple Snow Leopard Server (Model MC588Z/A (SLSVR)
    "Unlimited Client License"
It was around $25.50 (USD) with sales tax and shipping (NYS).
One thing though ... when you mention:  "you should make two virtual machines".
Not being too familiar with "Fusion 5" yet, Is setting up "two machine" all done under one installed version of "Fusion 5"?
Would you have "links" to any "Fusion 5" installation instructions/info for setting up the
"two machines" (one for Snow Leopard and one for Windows 7)?

  • I was using OS Snow Leopard and on 8/1/13 I downloaded Mountain Lion and found out it was not compatible with my HP printer (HP photosmart C5580) so I called Apple and asked how to get Mountain Lion off and Snow Leopard back on.  The Tech told me to

I was using OS Snow Leopard and on 8/1/13 I downloaded Mountain Lion.  Then I found out it was not compatible with my HP Printer (HP Photosmart C5580 all-in-one) so I called Apple support and the tech told me to erase the hard drive instead of going in the time machine.  Well I did that and then it took about three hours three days a week for about three weeks on the phone with an apple tech to get all my stuff back on my computer.  I have had trouble with my printer (won't do the scan anymore and wasn't printing on my DVDs.  Also the computer keeps freezing up when it is in the sleep mode, etc.
When I tried to list my problem on this forum it lists your OS at the bottom and mine had Mountain Lion listed as what I was using so apparently it didn't erase it.  Want to know how to get Mountain Lion off and put my Snow Leopard on so things start working right.

Go to the  menu/About This Mac - what OS version shows there?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.
