I've given up on Spaces

I think it is a brilliant concept and I love it. But it simply doesn't work. It loses windows and when it does the system is a pita. The only true fix I've found for the lost windows is to restart the machine. That is annoying to do every day (I shouldn't have to).
So, I will wait and hope Apple fixes Spaces. I'm sure it isn't entirely their fault as I can tell my Adobe and Microsoft apps, in particular, don't seem to "play nice" with it. Too bad, cool concept. It just doesn't work.
Anyone else give up on it?

Before the 10.5.2 update, many others, as well as myself, also frequently had disappearing windows while using Spaces (you can search this forum for "windows disappear") and it seemed the only way to resolve it was to restart.
I have had this occur only a few times since the most recent update. I found that when windows disappeared, if the Spaces are toggles by using the Control-arrow key combination to go to the next Space and then back the windows reappeared. This is much more efficient than restarting. It doesn't solve the problem, but it may be a work-around if you really want to continue using Spaces.

    Buying extra iCloud storage has given you extra space for your backups, it doesn't give you extra space on your iPad for downloading content. Your current free space on your iPad is shown in Settings > General > About > Available - the film's size should be shown on its description page in the store (HD films can be over 5 gig).
    If you want to stop it downloading then does it show in the Downloads tab in the iTunes store app - if it does then does swiping/dragging across it from right-to-left give you a Delete button on it ? And/or does it show in Settings > General  Usage > Videos, and if it does can you delete it from there ?
    You could also try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund you for the rental, or grant you a re-download so that can download it on your computer's iTunes instead : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
    If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Two JLabels sharing horizontal layout space

    My visual design calls for having two labels on a horizontal row, each justified to its edge. The leftLabel is anchored to the left edge of the panel. The rightLabel is anchored to the right edge. As their respective text changes, they grow toward the center of the panel, but I want to make the most of the horizontal space so that even if one of them is long, if the other is short, all the text can be seen. I don't want to arbitrarily restrict the width of either one since I don't know what the text will be at any one time.
    Say I have space for 10 chars across.
    If leftLabel is "ABCDEFGHI" and rightLabel is "Z", I want to see "ABCDEFGHI Z", but if leftLabel is "ABCDEFGHIJKLM" and rightLabel is "XYZ", they both won't fit, and I want to see "ABCDEF... XYZ".
    I've tried using GridBagLayout but I can't make it do what I want. The "GridBagLayout.columnWidths" constraints don't appear to have the desired "minimum size" effect.

    Use BorderLayout and place the left one at BorderLayout.CENTER and the right one at BorderLayout.EAST.
    The right one will be given as much space as it needs and the left one will take the rest.

  • String Manipulation with blank space at the end

    Hi All,
    DATA:  str1(999),
           a(10),
           b(10).
    DATA: len TYPE i.
    a = 'Welcome'.
    b = 'To all'.
    CONCATENATE a b INTO str1 RESPECTING BLANKS.
    len = STRLEN( str1 ).
    WRITE: len.
    result : 16.
    If I declared str1 as string result is 20. Because in above case empty space is truncated at last .
    So any otherway to getting result 20 with out declaring str1 as string.

    Hi vinoth ,
    To get spaces at last  ,
    data : str1 type char10 ,
             len type i .
    str1 = 'the ' .                  " space given by pressing space bar button
    len = STRLEN( str1 ).     " in len we get it as 3 , coz 'the ' is 3 only .
    str1 = 'the ' .                 " space given by pressing ALT 2 5 5
    len = STRLEN( str1 ).   " in len we get it as 4 , coz 'the ' is 3 and 1 space is given by pressing ALT 255 .
    This works,
    Hope it might be helpfull,

  • Recommendations for more disk space

    I have had my iMac for about a year and the 250GB disk is getting full. I'm considering getting an external storage device - what sort of factors do I need to consider when choosing? Any specific recommendations - I'm hoping to get an extra 500GB.
    Also, can I use the same external disk for Time Machine, or does it need a dedicated external disk drive?
    Thanks, Matt

    Also, can I use the same external disk for Time Machine, or does it need a dedicated external disk drive?
    Generally, Time Machine is best used on a dedicated partition.
    I have a single drive with 3 partitions - one of which is for Time Machine.
    So the answer is a qualified Yes.
    If you have nearly 250GB to backup - you will need a Time Machine drive of 500GB (as a minimum Apple recommends that Time Machine be given twice the space of the source).
    If you haven't purchased a drive yet - get a FireWire drive (800 if possible, I don't know if you iMac supports FW800 or FW400 if not).
    I have used Time Machine on a generic USB drive, and on WD MyBook Drives successfully. WD and Lacie are selling 1TB drives now.

  • ITunes could not back up the iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer

    iTunes 11.0.1 (22)
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    218.83 GB available
    iOS 6.0.2
    iPhone5
    I get this error occasionally since getting the iPhone5 in October. My last successful back up to thei Mac was yesterday. Tonight, no backup.
    One time when this occurred I had trashed files, and after I emptied the Trash the sympton went away. Tonight I had files in the Trash and emptie the Trash before connecting my iPhone and now no backup allowed.
    I have quit and relaunched iTunes, and unconnected and connected the iPhone tonight with no change in the symptom.
    My next counter measure will be to reboot.
    Any suggestions?

    On my computer (Spring 2006 iMac, Snow Leopard, iTunes 11.1.3):
      - I have 1.36 _terabytes_ of free space on my system disk.
      - I have 2.1 _terabytes_ of free space on my Drobo[*] which contains my iTunes library.
    My iPhone is an iPhone 5S 64Gb.
    A backup should require, one would assume, less than 64Gb. In other words, a drop in the ocean of free space available to iTunes.
    ... and yet EVERY time I attempt a backup to my computer since getting my 5S it says:
        'iTunes could not back up the iPhone "[name]'s iPhone" because not enough free space is available on this computer. Removing files and emptying the Trash will free up additional space.'
    It's very clear that there's a bug given how much space I have available, and it's been present for 2+ months. :/ I had been able to back up my iPhone 4S.
    - Stephen
    [*] As far as the OS is concerned, the volume has 3.22Tb free, but it is backed by 2.10Tb of actual available space. In any case, "a whole heck of a lot".

  • How to make more than one partition on Airport Time Capsule?

    how to make more than one partition on Airport Time Capsule?

    Only for the very brave......
    Open up the Time Capsule (voids the warranty)
    Pull the hard drive
    Place the hard drive in a separate enclosure
    Connect the enclosure directly to your Mac
    Use Disk Utility to partition the hard drive
    Reinstall the hard drive back in the Time Capsule
    For the rest of us.....
    The next best thing might be to set up one or more disk images on the Time Capsule, which will allow you reserve a given amount of space for each disk image.
    Open up Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Click on the New Image tab
    Navigate to the Time Capsule
    Set up the disk image by naming it and specifying how much space you want to reserve

  • High Eden Java Memory Usage/Garbage Collection

    Hi,
    I am trying to make sure that my Coldfusion Server is optomised to the max and to find out what is normal limits.
    Basically it looks like at times my servers can run slow but it is possible that this is caused by a very old bloated code base.
    Jrun can sometimes have very high CPU usage so I purchased Fusion Reactor to see what is going on under the hood.
    Here are my current Java settings (running v6u24):
    java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=256m -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch ........
    With regards Memory, the only memory that seems to be running a lot of Garbage Collection is the Eden Memory Space. It climbs to nearly 1.2GB in total just under every minute at which time it looks like GC kicks in and the usage drops to about 100MB.
    Survivor memory grows to about 80-100MB over the space of 10 minutes but drops to 0 after the scheduled full GC runs. Old Gen memory fluctuates between 225MB and 350MB with small steps (~50MB) up or down when full GC runs every 10 minutes.
    I had the heap set to 2GB initally in total giving about 600MB to the Eden Space. When I looked at the graphs from Fusion Reactor I could see that there was (minor) Garbage Collection about 2-3 times a minute when the memory usage maxed out the entire 600MB which seemed a high frequency to my untrained eye. I then upped the memory to 4GB in total (~1.2GB auto given to Eden space) to see the difference and saw that GC happened 1-2 times per minute.
    Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often? i.e do these graphs look normal?
    Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
    Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
    Note: These graphs are not from a period where jrun had high CPU.
    Here are the graphs:
    PS Eden Space Graph
    PS Survivor Space Graph
    PS Old Gen Graph
    PS Perm Gen Graph
    Heap Memory Graph
    Heap/Non Heap Memory Graph
    CPU Graph
    Request Average Execution Time Graph
    Request Activity Graph
    Code Cache Graph

    Hi,
    >Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often?
    Yes normal to garbage collect Eden often. That is a minor garbage collection.
    >Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
    Sometimes it is good to set Eden (Eden and its two Survivor Spaces combined make up New or Young Generation part of JVM heap) to a smaller size. I know your thinking - what make it less, but I want to make it bigger. Give less a try (sometimes less = more, bigger not = better) and monitor the situation. I like to use -Xmn switch, some sources say to use other method/s. Perhaps you could try java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -Xmn172m etc. I better mention make a backup copy of jvm.config before applying changes. Having said that now you know how you can set the size to bigger if you want.
    I think the JVM is perhaps making some poor decisions with sizing the heap. With Eden growing to 1Gb then being evacuated not many objects are surviving and therefore not being promoted to Old Generation. This ultimately means the object will need to be loaded again latter to Eden rather than being referenced in the Old generation part of the heap. Adds up to poor performance.
    >Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
    You are using Parallel garbage collector. Perhaps you could enable that to run multi-threaded reducing the time duration of the garbage collections, jvm args ...-XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=N etc where N = CPU cores (eg quad core = 4).
    HTH, Carl.

  • 10.6.1: panic running latest vuze

    Happened a number of times. Have run disk verify, etc; happens
    without any uncorrected problems. Panic message
    (give or take the hex) always the same. HW: Macmini2,1; various USB/FW devs,
    Only other oddity 4GB RAM installed (3 usable, maxmem=3072 was
    put into boot-args back before upgrade from Leopard so top and
    Activity Monitor wouldn't lie). Some crashes early after upgrade to 10.6,
    not much or at all after 10.6.1, but happening again. Main change
    around when it started happening again was change of cable modem/router
    from Linksys WCG-200 (all in one) to D-Link DCM-202 and DIR-825NA
    (latter stank at 2.00NA firmware, seems otherwise great at 2.02NA; switched
    hoping that smarter router wouldn't lock up due to torrent downloads
    (didn't at 2.00NA, but dropped/reset/ran slow; fast and smooth at 2.02NA
    for everything else, but now the Mac crashes again, whenever using vuze). One
    last possible complication: direct automount of ~/Documents/Azureus Downloads
    from Sun Blade 2000 NFS server (running SXCE snv_97); that's never been
    a problem before (my ~/Music/iTunes is also mounted like that, given vastly more
    space (1TB fully mirrored) on the Sun. But given that the panic is a networking issue,
    and the Mac's link to the new router runs at 1Gb FDX (old was 100Mb FDX, I think), while
    the Sun and the cable modem can both send/receive 100Mb or less, I'm probably
    able to push the Mac's NIC harder than before now. Router IP, everything directly
    visible except internal router MAC addr is the same. Both routers doing NAT and uPnP,
    and vuze using it.
    Sent in a couple of these via the panic reporter, but without all the endless ancillary
    data (too much to review meaningfully).
    Not switching cable modem back, too much better than old one for that, and
    the cable folks are minimally clueful. The one experiment I might be willing to try is to
    temporarily make the Azureus Downloads directory local (if I can figure out how not
    to corrupt the capability to resume a download too big to store locally that was running
    at the time of the crash - maybe keep copy of existing ~Library/Application Support/Vuze)
    and try vuze with strictly local download dir.
    Still...apps shouldn't crash kernel...and I don't think 3rd party kexts
    should have been involved...

    Nice catch. Same issue repeating crash on 10.6.2 with a Macbook Pro 2.2 & Vuze 4.3.0.0. Disabled IPv6 and so far so good. I'll reply again if it crashes or if I find a workaround.
    P.S. I haven't spent too much time with 10.6 but Apple hasn't always been a big fan of RFCs. We had a nightmare dealing with 10.3-10.5 OSX machines spitting out DHCP discover requests while still in the bound state and older tiger machines sending malformed dhcp requests causing ip conflicts and bad addresses all over our network.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

    Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
    Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

    I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
    EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

    Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs.  Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc.  Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

  • Can't Get Rid of Dropped Frames in FCP 7

    Hello all,
    I am editing in FCP and have only gotten as far as laying down a music track (MP3), and some b-role. I have given myself some space at the beginning of the track, and as soon as the video kicks in I get the dropped frames message. There are no fancy edits or effects, just the video. It happens with both .MOV files taken with my Canon 7D, and with footage I had converted from .MTS.
    The RT drop-down menu in the timeline only offers the following options:
    Play Base Layer Only
    Use Playback Settings
    Full Quality
    I have gone into Playback Control under System Settings and adjusted the options to the following:
    RT: Safe
    Video Quality: Low
    Frame Rate: Quarter
    I am still receiving the dropped frame message. My footage is stored on a 500 GB external Rugged LaCie drive, and is connected using 8-pin FireWire. The footage is being edited in 1080. Everything is up to date.
    Much appreciation for your help.

    Thank you both for replying.
    I converted the audio file (but still getting the error message) to AIFF/16bit/48kHz using iTunes. I had converted the .MTS fils to .MOV with iSkysoft Converter to the following settings:
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Frame Rate: 23.97
    Bit Rate: High Quality
    Channel: 2 Channels stereo
    Sample Rate: 44100
    Bit Rate: Medium
    I did not convert any of the Canon files to Pro Res. What do I need to do with those files? and is there something I can do during capture to help save a step in post?
    Thanks again to you both!
    Warmest regards,
    ~Shawn

  • Configuring Disk for ASM in a Standalone environment

    Hi,
    I am attempting to install ASM for the very first time ! I am installing ASM in a Standalone Linux 6 environment. I am following CH3 of the 11gR2 Database Installation Guide. I have installed the Oracle ASM packages and have configured ASM.
    I am now trying to configure the disk to use the ASM Library Driver
    In my case, my server has a single 250 Gb SCSI disk. I have used this for the install of Linux 6. However I have left some space unformatted which I had intended to use with ASM.
    when I do fdisk -l I get
    Disk /dev/sde: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

    A couple of things I am not sure of -
    Q1. Has the linux install in effect created some virtual disks i.e.
    /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_root, /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_swap and /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_home ?
    Q2. Are /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2 virtual disks in their own right or partitions of /dev/sde ?
    The 11gR2 install manual states on P3-13 that I should use fdisk or parted to create a single whole-disk partition on the disk devices to use
    I am not quite sure what I need to do -
    Q3a. I assume I can use part of my physical disk ( i.e. /dev/sbe2 ) with ASM rather than it having to be a complete physical disk ?
    Q3b. Do I simply mark /dev/sbe2 as an ASM disk using oracleasm createdisk DISK1 /dev/sbe2 ?
    or do I somehow have to create a partition on /dev/sbe2 ? ( I guess this harks back to Q2. in that is sbe2 a disk or a partition ? )
    any help greatly appreciated
    Jim

    Thanks Billy.
    I have checked back to my Linux install note and indeed it does seem to create the logical volumes at that stage i.e. it creates Lv_root, Lv_home and Lv_swap. During the nistall I was offered to specify the type of installation. The following options were given -
    - Use All Space
    - Replace Existing Linux Systems
    - Shrink Current System
    - Use Free Space
    - Create Custom Layout
    Q1. I chose the Use All Space. However from what you are saying it looks as if I  perhaps should have used the option 'Create Custom Layout'. I am guessing the use all space option is what created the Logical Volumes - is this correct and should I have used Create Custom Layout ?
    I reduced lv_home from 183732 to 50000 Mb. This left 173 Gb free - I intended to use this free space with ASM
    Q2. Can a single disk only have 4 primary partitions ?
    I guess I am where I am now, so I am wondering how I proceed with the disk layout I have presently.
    Can you clarify from my output of fdisk -l that was in my original post, what exactly I have. My understanding is as follows -
    There are 3 logical volumes created :  /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_root, /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_swap and /dev/mapper/vg_lab3-lv_home
    There is then the physical volume /dev/sde. On this physical volume is /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2
    Q3. Are these partitions on that volume ?
    Q4. /dev/sde1 appears to be a boot partition and /dev/sde2 appears to be the partition of 173 Gb that I did not allocate during the Linux install. Is this correct ?
    Q5. Is it possible that I can now take /dev/sde2 and mark that as an ASM Disk ? I wasn't sure if creating an ASM disk is restricted to an entire physical disk or if you can use a partition ?
    When I do the following as root user
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sde2
    Unable to open device "/dev/sde2" Device or resource busy
    I cannot understand how this is the case - /dev/sde2 is not mounted
    lsof /dev/sde2 does not show anything using /dev/sde2
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm status
    shows ASM is loaded and /dev/oracleasm is mounted
    Any help you can offer would be greatly received.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • HD TV Resolution - Help Please!

    I just purchased a 32" Samsung LCD TV as a secondary monitor for my new MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.2). I purchased an HDMI cable to run from my computer to the TV, however when running the resolution on the TV at 1920x1080 images look great but text looks horrible!
    Any suggestions as to how I can make the text look more crisp? I have read in some posts on other forums that there are drivers that I can download, or tweaks to the monitor control interface...but can't find any solid leads.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Scott,
    You don't mention the resolution for the 19", but I assume it is less than that of your Macbook Pro, or at least less dense.
    Refresh rates for LCDs are fixed, unlike CRT displays which support varying frequencies. As long as it is being properly recognized the the MBP, the rate should be correct. Another quirk of LCDs is that they only display well at their native resolution; they can go lower, but they look much worse when they do. This makes "mirroring" problematic, at best.
    Keep in mind that the apparent quality of the display is going to be based on what you can see on the MBP, sitting right beside it. This might actually be the only problem, because the Macbook Pro's display is very, very fine!
    What I think you should do is try connecting up to a higher-resolution display at a store. Take your Macbook Pro in when traffic is slow, and the customer reps will probably let you have free reign with the display models. Stick with LCDs, if that's your desire (CRTs still have many benefits, even if they are not normally as large), but go directly to the higher-resolution units. The Cinema displays in an Apple store would be ideal, but you may want to check third-party offerings, too, just to prove to yourself that it is the quality of the display, not the manufacturer, that is the issue here.
    Specifically, it is the number of pixels that are packed into a given amount of space (1 square inch, for example). In this regard, Apple's offerings are at the top of the heap, including the display in the MBP. In order to match or exceed what you have built-in, you're going to have to go with higher-end displays. In this, physically bigger is not always better.

  • GetRuntime().exec("chmod 777 a file.txt") - does not do the intended task

    Hi,
    I am trying to change the permissions of file (file name has spaces) using the Runtime.getRuntime().exec() method on AIX platform. My sample code is -
    import java.io.*;
    public class ChangeMode
         public static void main(String[] args)
              Process p = null;
         String cmd = null;
              cmd = "chmod " + "000" + " " + "a file.txt";
              try
              p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec( cmd );
              p.waitFor();
              catch( Exception e )
              e.printStackTrace();
              System.out.println("The exit value "+p.exitValue());
    In this case - I am getting exitValue of 2.
    But, the strange part is that - I am able to run the command
    "chmod 000 a file.txt "
    from the command prompt successfully.
    Any ideas what does an exitValue of 2 means and where is this program getting failed.
    Thanks!
    ~Saurabh

    Is 'a file.txt' the file name ?
    If I'm right, the Runtime.exec(String cmd) method will split the given string (using spaces.)
    The first token will be used a the command and the other ones as the arguments.
    In your example it will call chmod with three arguments: 000, a and file.txt
    In order to avoid that, you should either use the Runtime.exec(String[] cmd) method with: String[] cmd = new String[] {"chmod", "000", "a file.txt"};or try to put your file between ticks: String cmd = "chmod 000 'a file.txt'";You could have a look at this article to learn more about Runtime.exec() :

    I hope it will help.

  • Format of the verizon email page

    The email page is cluttered with headers and tabs and miscellaneous junk. The actual text that I receive and send is given extremely little space at the bottom of the window. See the picture here.
    Can I change the format to see more text area??

    You might find it better to use an email client app on the android (Verizon or vanilla) rather then trying to use a web version.
