I've got 6 Pro. What is entailed in the upgrade process to 7? Dongle?

I was thinking about jumping up to 7 Pro (I have 6 Pro now). I wanted to first know what was involved. Do I have to send in my existing USB dongle to get the new one or anything like that? Or do I just switch it out for one that will come in the retail box? What kind of procedure and I looking at?
Also, assuming that it is infact just exchanging the dongle I have now for the new one, will the new dongle allow me to run the previous versions of logic that I currently employ (Logic Platinum 5.40 and Logic Pro 6.4.3 specifically)? I need to be able to run Logic 5.4 in conjunction with the latest version so I was wondering how authorization would work for that with a potentially new dongle.
Thanks for the info in advance! In case I upgrade, I want to keep the downtime to a minimum!
p.s. could this upgrade just be moot? could we expect a pretty big update pretty soon? one that might raise the numerical version of the app?

My key is a blue Emagic one. i got it with Logic 5 PC, and I bought the ES1 and EXS24 so had those authorised on it as well.. When Emagic axed PC support, I got a free Mac authorisation. Then I upgraded to Logic 6 Pro, which also enabled all the instruments for the PC version.
I then upgraded to Logic Pro 7.
So my little blue Emagic XS key is bulging at the seams, but seems to be quite happy running Logic 5 PC, Logic 6, Logic Pro 6, and Logic Pro 7.
On the other hand, if I did ever exchange my blue key with an Apple one, I would definitely lose the PC authorisations, and lose the ability to run my PC version. I'd probably lose the 6 authorisations too...

I just received a new Macbook Pro. I turned it on for the very first time, entered in my name and password, etc. Then I inserted the SL upgrade diskd circular arrow, then black screen again.. It started up, I acknowledged the license agreement, it said it would take 56 minutes to install. So I walked away. Came back ten minutes later to a blank screen. It would not respond to swipe or click, i.e. no wake-up. After a few more minutes the computer seemed dark, cold, silent. Holding down the power button finally started it back up.
Disk spun, Apple log and spinning arrow, then blank screen again. I was finally able to eject the upgrade disk. I had to re-install Leopard and parts of iLife.
So what is a normal looking upgrade? Should the screen go blank? Did I screw things up with lack of patience?
Any insights appreciated.

Actually, this is normal for the default installation method (IOW, not starting by running from the DVD). The installer will first run some checks & then transfer a bunch of files to the drive for later use. The screen will be normal while this happens, but eventually the installer will restart the Mac & for a while the screen will be black -- typically less than a minute but sometimes longer. After this, the screen should reappear.
So, it is best to be patient & give the process some time to continue before deciding something is wrong & forcing a shutdown or restart.

Early Intel Mac Pro--what are my graphics card upgrade options?

I bought my Mac Pro in June, 2007 and want to improve my ability to use it for games--right now it's a bit of a dog in that respect. I have a 3 GHz dual Quad-Core processor setup that my hardware overview says is a MacPro2,1 model identifier. My stock graphics card is the GeForce 7300GT using the PCIe bus. Any help would be greatly appreciated--I know there are some expensive cards out there for newer models and that there is some discussion on what is compatible with earlier models like mine, but I would hope that my $5,000 system has no viable upgrade path for this.

The card is dead silent on idle. I haven't tried it on any games yet, but with 720p HD content like .mkv files playing in VLC, the fan only goes up to 20-25%, and even at that I can't even hear it.
Idle fan speed is about 5%
Idle temps are 63 deg celcius (note that its summer, and my ambient room temps are hot)
Note these temps and fan speeds are under Windows 7 on ATI CCC. I can't get the temps and fan speeds under OSX, but I doubt they are different, the card is very quiet. And yes it does work under bootcamp
Aside from maybe dual flashed PC 1GB 4870s in crossfire, this is most likely the best gpu upgrade you can do presently; it is the best upgrade if you want to stay with apple oem parts.
There is always the dark horse: the GTX 285 from nvidia, however I doubt (wish) that it will be supported for 1st gen MPs. It's possible, though highly unlikely.

What Is Up With The Upgrade & Activation Fee?

I noticed that AT&T is charging both an 'activation' & 'upgrade' fee for iPhone 3GS users:

Last year I remember AT&T charging me $38 activation fee. I read that the activation fee was cut in half, but they add an 'upgrade' fee which new users don't have. So in other words, AT&T sticks the $36 to you no matter what.
I wonder if AT&T gives a discount for not delivering MMS/high-speed 7.2 HSPA/tethering available?

Macbok pro screen goes dead during the startup process

Everything was working fine tonight until the computer went to sleep. After that I couldn't get the screen to stay on. I restart and it seems typical then the screen goes dead while the laptop continues to boot. Any ideas? The screen stays on during firewire target disk mode, ***!

It's a warranty issue. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Hello my OS upgrade process was interrupted due to Internet failure, how may I re-try to upgrade it? I got a message that says I can´t, the serial number can be used only once!

Hello I bought a macbook pro on August this year and got a bonus to upgrade the OS from Lion to Mountain Lion for free. I started the donwload but it was interrupted due to internet failure so the upgrade process was aborted. When I tried to initiated the process again, I got a message that says I can not used the same serial number to download Maountain Lion. What can do in order to upgrade the OS using the "bonus" I received with the purchase?

I have the same problem, only Purchases in the App Store shows nothing. The download NEVER showed up in the App Store only in the Launchpad with a progress icon. The Icon said paused but when clicked, it just disappeared with no download.
How am I supposed to get my free upgrade now?

Got Early 2008 mac pro - What kind of power do I possess?

To whom it may concern, for a long time now I have been with powerpc and finally made the jump and transition to the mac pro. The machine I currently have is a Early 2008 8-core 3.0ghz machine. I'd like to know what kind of real power I have here. Also, how do I set up a regular raid setup using either disk utility or a 3rd party program?
My hard drives are as follows: 2 320GB hard drives, 1 1TB hard drive w/32MB cache, and 1 250GB hard drive. I also am going to get the ATI Radeon 4870 HD so that I can use the mini-display port with a new 24 inch ACD.
Bear in mind as of right now, I am not much of a heavy graphics or pro-app user, though I plan to delve into imovie and creating my own movies of my family. I also plan to learn a little bit about high definition encoding(really don't know what this is), and possibly maybe a little bit of the other video apps.
I got the mac pro for mainly being able to stick with the intel technology, as I realize now that Intel is the way to go. Also, got the mac pro due to its powerful expansion capabilities.
So, my question is this: What options are available for my machine? I am aware that the max memory is 32GB, though will I ever need to use that much? What is optimal or the sweet-spot for my mac pro to be fast?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

either something got damaged when you installed the hard drive or you need to perform a pram reset (other possibilites could have occured, these are the ones I think)
