I've got a 2012 Mac Book Pro that won't let me restore...
I feel like I've tried everything at this point. While using the disk utility, first aid told me that there was an issue with my Macintosh HD that couldn't be fixed (I tried it several times just to be sure). So I tried using the internet recovery, nothing. I would verify my mac, but once I agreed to the terms, there was no HD I could select to install to. The internal recovery HD did the same thing.
As a last resort before taking it in I just decided to erase the entire HD, and that finally worked. Now I'm not sure what to do. I'm running into the same issue trying to re-install the OS (Lion over internet recovery mode). It takes me past the apple verification screen then there's nothing I can select to install to. I have a back up external hard drive, but no idea how to go about restoring from it. Please let me know what might be happening!

'Word' prior to 2008 will not work in Mavericks. No PPC program will work in Mavericks. Word 2011 should work.

I would open Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) to check and see if there is something using an inordinate amount of CPU cycles......select the CPU tab and click on the drop down menu from the top of that window.....choose (All Processes's).......double or triple %'s....will ramp up the fan...

10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;

have a mac book pro that crashed. ran disk utility to repair. comp booted and ran for short time. then crashed. ran repair again. disk utility said it could not repair disk and needed to format and start again.
comp said it could not unmount disk and now when comp trys to boot all i get is a question mark on the screen. helpErase and Install
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. -

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

Recovering Disk Space
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files or purchase a lager disk or SSD (see below). You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again. More headroom is better. If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
- Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
Empty the Trash.
- Start iPhoto.
Empty its trash.
Restart.
- Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart the computer.
As soon as you hear the chime press and hold the right shift key.
Be patient. Hold it down until you see the Apple icon.
Empty the trash.
Restart in normal mode.
- Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the drop down menu.
Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
- Empty the Trash.
- Restart.
- Re-index your system disk (Macintosh HD):

How much disk space is available now?
Normally you should backup before proceeding to delete other files but at this point it may not be possible. Having taken the steps above will the backup compete now? If not, stop, post back, for emergency data protection procedures and/or how to free more disk space. -

Beginning to think about moving from my eMac.
Now that Marathon has moved along,
the only thing I want to bring along is Photoshop 7.0
which runs on OS X 10.4.11 at the latest.
Currently, I have a firewire hard disk with a 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 volume.
I boot into 10.4.11 when I want to use Photoshop.
I might inherit a 2008 mac book pro that came with 10.5.5 installed.
Any way to get it to boot into a 10.4.11 volume?

Try doing a click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

1. Download (save) the disk image file 2020PluginInstaller.dmg
I double click on the link which says "Install 3D Planner"

A file downloads to my download folder called 2020PluginInstaller_IKEA.dmg
2. Mount the disk image (open/run the downloaded file) if not mounted automatically
I double click on the downloaded file
3. Find the 2020PluginInstaller window (might be behind the window on top)
A small window opens up with a lego brick called 2020PluginInstaller_IKEA.dmg and a folder called Internet plug ins. I highlight the lego brick and do File, Get info and unlock it
4. Drag the lego piece to the folder (if you do not have admin privileges you will be prompted to authenticate)
I do this and put in a password to authenticate
5. Restart the browser (it is not enough to close the browser window, you need to restart the browser
application)
I've tried restarting Safari, I've tried re-starting the computer
6. Access the same link and you will now see the Start button and be able to start planning your room!"
When I go back to the IKEA kitchen planner I don't see a start button, I just see the exact same screen as before prompting me to install the 3D planner

I went by the Apple Store and they told me that there was a "Flat Rate" repair service for this particular part where they would replace the logic board along with the USB ports for $350. Seems like best avenue. All of this would have been moot but my wifi in the computer also doesn't work so I was using my phone as a hot spot and tethering it to the computer for Internet access when the last port quit. This left me with no internet and no printing capabilities on the computer I use for my business. Basically became a nice paperweight. lol
They will ship it off Monday and I should have it back Thursday!

AnnaAccording to this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 the Late-2011 MBPs have the same EFI-version than the Early-2011 ones ( MBP81.0047.B24 EFI 2.3) but different (updated) SMC-versions.
And since the Late-2011 MBPs ship with OSX Lion 10.7.2 chances are slim that an older OSX version will work.
