I've set up my new Nano 7th generation, but for some reason I cannot hear anything through the earphones. What am I missing??

I cant get any sounds through the speaker. Cant hear sms or emails arrive. If the phone rings i hear it but pple cant hear me or i cant hear them.
The phone works fine with the headphones plugged in.
I have tried all the usual solutions, inserted and removed the headset (at least 50 times)
Soft reboot
full restore
Nothing seems to work. I have searched on this and it seems to be a well know issue but there doesnt seem to be any firm solutions that i can find to fix the problem

If no change after inserting and removing the headset at least 50 times, powering the iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset, and restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

Thanks for the question. The short answer is Yes. Once you change your Apple ID primary email address, the previous email address will be freed up for use with another account:

Haha I had the exact same problem. Once I had tried it like 4 different pairs of headphones i was ready to give my iPod back. Then I tried pushing the headphones in further and proceeded to kick myself. I seems a lot of people have the same problem, post it on here and realise a few minutes later.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off'). I just updated my original iPad 32 GB WiFi to iOS 5.1 about fifteen minutes ago. But I did it with the system restore feature in iTunes. So it wiped out everything on my iPad. But it did work. Then I restored an earlier backup and all went fine. Maybe you could try backing up your iPad and then using Restore to get it back to factory settings to see what happens.

The number keys are the main items that show up with the alpha letters also there like they are when you are in the phone dialing mode keypad. Can't seem to get to the alpha characters.
