I've got a new iPod touch. How do I transfer songs from my old 'classic' iPod?

So I've got a new iPod touch for Christmas. I want to transfer all the music from my old iPod. I don't store music on my computer, it's just on the iPod. The only solution I can find is to download a program, copy everything from the old one to the computer and then move them to the new one! Seems a lot of work. Is there no official Apple way to just move music across?

Ah! Well, here's a tip.
Use Smart Playlists to manage your iPod. This does of course mean using Sync to manage your iPod, but since manually managing is so much hard work, Syncing makes more sense...
By creating Smart Playlists, (which can add and remove songs according to rules you choose) you can create a Playlist which will be ever changing and you could then manage your iPod by Syncing Selected Playlists to it. You can experiment with Smart Playlists inside your iTunes Library without causing any irreversible damage. If you decide that you like - and can work with them, then is the time to start using them on your iPod.
Examples:
Starting with a very basic Smart Playlist: This Playlist would contain all your songs, providing they haven't been played in x days/weeks/months. Look at the following screenshots:
In the shot above, I've created a Smart Playlist with the rule "Playlist is Music". This Playlist will automatically fill with all the songs in my Library, taking up 123.16GB in storage. Now look what happens if I tick the box named "Match only ticked items":
This step was simply to keep my Playlist tidy, i.e. not having music that I don't have on my iPod anyway. Watch what happens though, if I add another rule designed to keep out songs that I've played recently and so don't want to here again for a while:
With this one simple additional rule, my Playlist is reduced from 123GB to just 61.75GB. However, if I only have a 64GB iPod, then even that's too large, so by increasing the number of weeks...
... I reduce the size of the Playlist to a more manageable 51.18GB.
What happens then is that I Sync selected Playlists to my iPod, i.e. this Smart Playlist, which you'll notice I have named "Reduce size Playlist".
I then have 51GB of music on my iPod, which I can then look for (and play) in exactly the same way as before, by Artist, Song, Genre etc.
At the next Sync with your iTunes Library, any songs that have been played recently are removed from the Playlist, while any songs that were last played more than 125 weeks ago are added back to the Playlist and the Playlist on the iPod (and therefore the songs on the iPod) is updated.
Now - that's the basic version. By creating more sophisticated Smart Playlists, you can Sync selected Artists, Albums etc. with your iPod so that any songs that you always want on it are there, while songs you don't cherish so much are only put back on after a while of last playing. For example, you could have five star songs go back on after just two months, four star songs after three months, and so on. If you use Playlists, you can Sync those as well, so that you can play by Playlist if you so wish. You could even keep the Recently Played Playlist on your iPod so that all songs recently played are left on the iPod for two weeks after last being played. If a song gets played again, it stays in the Recently Played Playlist, so it stays on the iPod. But if it doesn't get played for two weeks, it gets removed from the iPod.
If this sounds as though may help you, but you need help with Smart Playlists, you can always ask in this forum.

  • Does anyone know how I can transfer songs from my old Dell Digital Jukebox to iTunes so I can sync them to my nano?

I have a new Windows 8.1 pc, and a new iPod nano 7th gen. How do I upload songs from my old Dell Digital Jukebox (yes, I know it's a dinosaur, but it still works great) to iTunes so I can sync those songs over to the nano?

Also, I should mention that I spoke to an Apple rep. He sent me a link to download a driver for the Jukebox once we found out that the pc did not recognize the device when I plugged it into the USB port. He told me that once I upload the driver, it will recognize it and I can just copy and paste the songs into a folder, then import them to iTunes. So far it has not worked and when I tried to call back, it looks like morning is the soonest I can speak to someone. So I'm trying on here.

  • How do i transfer songs from an old ipod to a new one?

I had a nano and i now have a classic.  My computer with my old itunes account gpt stolen, so i dont have all the songs i didnt buy from itunes anywhere but my ipod.  how do i transfer all my songs to my computer so i can put them on my new ipod?

Some of the information below is summarized by turingtest2 in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18842615
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How can I transfer songs from my old Ipod to my new one?

I just bought a new ipod video from apple and I would like to transfer all of my songs from my old 3rd generation ipod to my new one, how can I do this?

Download iRip, the program will detect your iPod then select "recover". If you have a firewire connection this will be fast. If you have a new iPod then you'll wait a little longer for your music to be ripped. When everything's recovered you eject the old iPod and connect the new one, drag'n drop, voilá. Don't forget to get rid of your music once you are sure it's installed -and maybe backuped in a external hard drive- so your computer memory won't be affected.
I use mac, I'm noticing that you are windows, if this don't work, google "rip ipod" and you'll find something there. Hope it works!

If your iPod touch music is in your iTunes library, you just need to sync the new iPod nano with iTunes, the songs will be transfer to your new iPod. If not, you can follow this guide to transfer the songs from iPod touch to iTunes first, and then re-sync them to your new iPod. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

How do I transfer from my old ipod to my new ipod

You can't transfer it directly.  If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library.  Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

  • How do i transfer songs from itunes to my ipod

I tried to transfer a song that i bought from the itunes library to my ipod but a message always pops up that says i am not authorized to play it on my computer. what does this mean and how do i put the song on my ipod?

You need to play at least a part of songs purchased from the iTMS to authorize them. They won't copy to your iPod until you do this.
How to transfer Purchased Music from iTunes to your iPod
    iTMS Song and Computer Authorization
If you've played & authorized them in iTunes and they still skip, try this. De-authorize the computer in iTunes/Advanced menu, then re-authorize it. You re-authorize it by playing one of the songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store within iTunes. It should ask you for your Apple ID and password, and then the computer will be authorized again. Sync your iPod with iTunes, and those songs should play on the iPod once again.
Another common cause of this is not having the latest version of iTunes.
If you are using the latest version of iTunes (6.0.2), then you need to make sure your iPod software is up to date also. Get the iPod Updater software, install it, run it and update your iPod.
When you have done this, authorize your music in iTunes by playing a few seconds of it within iTunes, re-sync your iPod, and it should transfer by whatever synching method you choose.

  • How can i transfer songs from my old computer to my new computer?

I got an Macbook Air for a birthday present and i have all my music on my old computer! I am trying to figure out how to transfer it to my new computer. please help!

There are a couple of ways, you could share your library through iTunes on the original device and then let iTunes on the new machine access the share, then copy the songs to the new machine (You will lose all play stats using this route).
Secondly, create a network share on the original machine, access share and copy the library files over to the new machine, iTunes should on the first load validate the library (this route will keep all play stats).
