I've gotten a kernel panic 4 times in a row while trying to reinstall lion osx from a flash drive to a reformatted hard drive. How is this possible when there's "nothing" on my computer?
My SSD failed and I was instructed to reformat my hard drive and restore my files. I erase my hard drive using Disk Utility and reinstalled Lion from a flash drive. While Lion is installing, I get a kernel panic. That's happened now four times in a row and I'm befuddled because I don't have anything on my computer to conflict right? Please help.

Do you think it's ram related?
No way to tell unless you test it. Like I said kernel panics are usually hardware related. Since your Macbook Pro is from the "2009" era, run the Hardware Test disc which you should already have - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
Apple Store diagnostic testings are FREE. It's the repairs you are responsible for if out of warranty.

I have a Macbook from 2007 or earlier. I currently run OSx 10.6.8. I wanted to upgrade to Mavericks so that I can get the new aperature. However I was wondering if my Macbook model was to old to run mavericks. Is this the case? Do i need a newer model? The other option is to get an different aperature. Does anyone know what Aperature runs with 10.6.8? Aperature 1.5.1 does not run with my current operating system.
Probably not, but check below:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
I use my PowerPC Quicksilver G4 (2.1), 867 MHz, 1.5 GB standart video card system 10.4.11 to scan (lack of driver for my Mac Pro 10.6.8)
The G4 has been running flawless, now I get kernel panics every time (shut down your computer). When it stays on I get blotched video
left-over spots, tearig and then shut down your computer...
I did all recommended software tests Diskutility, rebuild with DiskWarrior and Apples full Hardware test. Everything comes out fine!
I am at the end of my know how. Thank you for any help

Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?
Thank you again for your input BDAqua

Hi,
my imac crash with a kernel panic many times per day, many applications are unable to open correctly and the close after 1 or 2 seconds.
I suspect a memory problem but i am not sure. here is the dump of the last crash.
thanks

Kernel Panic every time I plug in my external drive
I'm getting kernel panics every time I plug in an external drive. This is happening on a MacBook Pro as well as on a Mac Mini (G4). Both are running 10.5.6.
The drive is one of the Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives that are having all sorts of other problems. I have it in a CoolMax USB 2.0 enclosure (this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159076) I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks and didn't have any problems until this morning when I consistently get this kernel panic.
Obviously I can't run Disk Utility on it, unless there's a way to plug it in without it automounting. I could boot my MBP to XP, but the drive has two partitions and both are HFS+. Ideally I would like to preserve the data on the drive. They're only backups, but I don't have access to the originals at the moment, as my main machine is out of commission. Lots of hardware problems lately.
Any ideas?Pondini wrote:

Ha, you're right, I didn't even notice that.
I did a google search for that error and found another thread with the same problem but no clues there either: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8833182 -
Is anyone having a problem connecting 400 firewire thru an adapter for the 800 firewire port on a Macbook Pro 2011? It does a kernel panic every time I connect it. Is there a "proper way" to connect it? Just in case it makes a difference I am trying to hook up an Avid Mbox Pro for Pro tools.
What is the part number and model of Firewire adapter?
I have used them in the past without any problems whatsoever.

That error often indicates that the Time Machine drive's filesystem is damaged, so Time Machine can't back up to the drive and it crashes.
As you are backing up to an external drive, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Then, choose the Time Machine's partition of your external drive in the sidebar, and repair permissions and verify the disk. If it gives you an error, repair the drive. Can you repair the drive? If not, you may have to format the Time Machine drive -
Kernel Panic During Time Machine Backups
I get a kernel panic each time I try and backup using Time Machine. It works fine for the initial backup, but after that each backup causes a kernel panic.
I thought the drive was going out, so I got a new one. It still happens. I have done disk permission checks and run Onyx, as well as checked plists. I have checked through the console around the panics, but do not see anything too crazy. I've checked for kernel extensions, but the terminal command does not bring anything out at all. Any help?

Kernel panics several times a week
My MacBook Pro keeps having continuous kernel panics several times a week. How can I figure out what's causing them?
Hi serylup,
I think I was able to find the cause. I realized that the kernel panics only began happening soon after I bought a Logitech Wireless Bluetooth mouse. Instead of just using the mouse with the Bluetooth connectivity, I also installed the software that came with it.
So, what I did was turn off the mouse and delete it from the list of Bluetooth devices on the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences. Then I went and purged my system of the Logitech additional software. I made sure that all the suspect files like .plist files and Application Support files were removed as well.
Then I rebooted and started using my machine. The kernel panics stopped immediately. I then proceeded to use the mouse but only with the Bluetooth connectivity and no extra software and I haven't had any problems since.
So, I guess what I would recommend you do is to try and figure out if you've installed any third-party software for any peripheral devices (especially if they come from Logitech!!!) and uninstall those third party devices. You really don't need Logitech software for their keyboards and wireless mouses; they work just fine as "plug-and-play".
I hope this helps!

What is CIJScannerRegist? I've gotten two Kernel panics in the past 2 hrs
My Mac Pro has been stable for over 2 years now. I've just gotten two kernel panics in the last 2 hours, both related to a process called CIJScannerRegist. Who owns this process and what does it do? I did a ps aux on it and at least found where it is located:
$ ps aux | grep CIJScannerRegist
phoppes 406 0.0 0.0 2439324 1100 s000 RV+ 3:01PM 0:00.05 grep CIJScannerRegist

I still don't know what it does. Any help would be appreciated.

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist
Message was edited by: rimcrazyOk.. I have one question answered but it brings up another. For anyone else that is having this issue, CIJScannerRegist is some daemon that is getting kicked off on boot. At the moment I don't know WHY it is getting started but I have found this. The application is located at: /Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister . This is an app related to Canon All-In-One printers. I have a Canon Pixima MP800R Scanner/Printer. For some strange reason that escapes me all of the sudden this is causing Kernel Panics. I have a New MBP and an older Mac Pro. Both have SL 10.6.2 installed. Both have the Canon Driver installed. I found that both had an earlier version so I downloaded the latest driver from the Canon website. The one you want is the 45.3Mb file named mp800rosxns10ea7-3.dmg. This has the printer/scanner/network all rolled into one.
What is very curious is on boot my laptop (which does not kernel panic) boots but the process CIJScannerRegist does NOT start. On my desktop however I get the following two additional processes that are running:
$ ps aux | grep Image
phoppes 702 0.1 0.0 2435032 532 s000 R+ 8:46PM 0:00.01 grep Image

phoppes 717 0.0 0.0 2435032 484 s000 R+ 8:50PM 0:00.00 grep Image
You can see process 257 and 254 were started on boot. If I kill both process, I don't get a kernel panic. What I would like to know is what in blue blazes is starting the processes? If I go under System Pref's on BOTH machines, under Login Items there is the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility but only on my Mac Pro am I getting these additional two processes. I did a ps aux | grep Scan and I see the network Scan utility. That is a different process. Something is starting this CIJScannerRegist process. What I would like to do is simply fix that this process is getting started but I'm not sure where in the boot process that this is getting kicked in.
So for anyone else with this issue, the hack fix is do a ps aux | grep Image in a terminal window. Get the process ID of CIJScannerRegist and then do a kill -9 ID# where ID# is the process id you got from the first command. That will stop the kernel panics but still doesn't explain why they are getting started.
I will stop this thread and make a new post on the process as that is really a different question. -
Kernel panics with Time Machine on TC
I have my TC now for 4 days and I had to quit using Time machine as it now seem to creates a kernel panic every time it creates a back up.
I'm really not very pleased with TC. Since I started the initial back up, with ethernet cable, i've had the windows feeling. Initial Back up failed 4 times before i even got to start Time machine working.
Since 2 days i'm noticing drop outs with the wifi connection, this resulted presumably in a faulty back up because since my last dropped connection every Time machine starts creating a back up I get that grey curtain of death.
If the only solution to getting everything working is again to start all over, ill just stop using Time machine as this little box that should do everything in the background has become the most forefront user experience since I got it.shouldn't be doing that. Call AppleCare and use your telephone support for Time Capsule

I am trying to reinstall Dreamweaver CS3 from the CD after having computer issues. Now getting error "You can only install one Adobe product at a time. Please complete the other installation before attempting to install ......." There is no other Adobe product installing. I have used the Adobe Cleaner Tool many times and uninstalled other Adobe Products but neither has worked. I have uninstalled/reinstalled this CD version of Dreamweaver several times when changing computers and after having computer issues. A google search of the problem suggested it may be an error related to the number of times I can reinstall this product due to licensing issues. Please help.

Absolutely not. You are misinterpreting things. The activation check never happens when just running the installer, only much later. It means what it says - there is another "install" pending/ active on your system, meaning somewhere there is an (invisible) process still blocking things. Either way, since you haven't provided any real technical info, we can't advise specifically. if you are on Windows, you may want to check your task manager and terminate any setup.exe and msiexec.exe processes plus potentially may need to manually fix/ delete some registry keys. For anything beyond that you will have to be much more specific.
