I've Had it with my powerbook

Hi, I have a 10/2004 Powerbook 1.5 ghz $2400 model and I am on my last straw becasue last year, about a month after i got the sleep light went crazy and started blinking uncontrollably, which i had my logic board replaced, then the light wouldnt work at all and they replaced the logic booard again wiht no success, then becasue they installed a faulty board the display went crazy, had it rplaced again no my sleep light doesnt work and i think there is another problem becasue i cant boot to mac oos x and when i try to boot from the cd it wont work then i tried to safe boot only taking me to the terminal thingy and i tried fsck with no luck but then it says that a sensor is failin and needs to shut down now i got my files off and i am going to take it in but is there anythin i should do? I want Apple to give me a new computer becasue it has had way to many problems and I needed it for one of my exams tommorrow which puts me in a really bad rut

will I have another f**** prblem on my hands
because that was the only option they gave me
Yes!
There are some unsubstantiated reports that there are some lineless screens out there. But, the audio issue is on every hi-res 15" and 17".
So far Apple has been playing the denial game with both of these issues even though there are hundreds of posts all over the place about them.
OTHO, maybe you'll get lucky!!

  • Is a WD My Book Studio Desktop 3TB Hard Drive - FW 400/800, USB 2.0, Apple Time Machine Ready external hard drive bootable with my Powerbook G4 12" PPC 10.5.8?

    Sirs or madams,
Is my Powerbook G4 12” PPC 10.5.8 'bootable' with a Western Digital My Book Studio Desktop 3TB Hard Drive - FW 400/800, USB 2.0, Apple Time Machine Ready external hard drive? Western Digital says officially no, but that it MIGHT be. I primarily live in China and bought a datastorage.com.cn Clearlight s400+ external hard drive enclosure with a 320GB disk drive a few years ago in China. My computer 'boots' fine from it, but since I got it in China all the paperwork, etc. is in Chinese; my Chinese isn't quite sufficient enough yet to read it. But there are references to something called "SATA", whatever that is.
My level of computer 'under the hood' knowledge is extremely low. I've been told that SATA has some relationship as to whether or not an external hard drive will boot a computer via the Firewire connection, something relating to 'interface', which I assume is how separate electronic gadgets work, or don't work, with each other.
I frankly don't care much for computers, the internet, or their related gadgets such as all these fancy phones. I longingly reminisce about the days when there were no such things. I use a computer & the internet because I have to, and unfortunately unlike a car where one doesn't have to have 'under the hood' knowledge to operate it, just knowledge of the steering wheel, brake, gas, etc., one seemingly must know a ridiculously great amount of 'under the hood' knowledge, including jargon, to operate computers.
So, please try to respond accordingly; thank you.
If this particular external hard drive won't, for certain, be bootable with my computer, can you advise as to what readily available brand/model would be in the 3TB range for a similar price, roughly $150ish??
    Thank you very much.

    Mr. BGreg,
Thank you very much. "...under the covers...". I think you meant "under the hood", as in a car. I suppose "under the covers" would be man/woman interfacing, which I am familiar with!
Actually, I'm back in the US now for a few months. I looked at the OWC web site, but only cusorily so far. I'll contact them; they appear knowledgeable about Apple computers.
As to what you wrote about Western Digital's cases, I certainly wouldn't want a poor case. In China I had over time gotten 3 different external drive cases, 3 different Chinese brands, and separately bought Hitachi brand disk drives that 'simply' plugged into the cases. The drives are roughly 80GB 120GB and 320GB. The two larger ones are in cases that have Firewire plugs/jacks, which are bootable with my computer.
So my understanding, as you wrote, has been that my Powerbook will boot from an external hard drive, provided it connects via Firewire, and the disk drive itself is 'normally' formatted with however my computer's own disk drive is formatted, (HFS OS extended (journaled) or some such??). So I was left wondering why Western Digital would indicate that even though their such-and-so external hard drive case/drive was Firewire capable, that they would then say it would not be bootable with my Apple PPC computer......
Well, anyway, since you indicated Western Digital's case quality is suspect, then I'll try OWC and disregard Western Digital.
Naturally, OWC should be able to address this, but your thoughts are also welcome. You mentioned the OWC cases are good with Apples. Would the disk drives OWC supplied with the cases also be of relatively dependable quality?? From my so far only cursory look at their web site they appear to have various options, including case only options where I could insert my own or their own drives. These sorts of options seem preferable, also along with quality components.
My Powerbook has been in use since 2004. In China I put in a 1.25 memory 'chip' in the bottom and installed the 10.5.8 operating system, which I understand are the maximum workable with my Powerbook. When I inquired with Chinese friends if my 1.33 GHz processor could be taken out and a more powerful one put in, they said it wasn't feasible because in my particular computer my processor was, as I recall them saying, soldered/'permanently' connected with the 'motherboard', that it would just be easier to get a new computer.
I would be with them and they would nonchalantly open it completely up showing me all its tightly arranged 'innards' while at least giving it a good internal dust/dirt clean job for cheap lunch and a beer (& so much dirt/dust/lint there was!)...these are the same folks who build the things of course...fast moving hands with tiny screws flying everywhere, but everything 100% all back in place when finished.
My Chinese friends also said that nowadays Apples are not as well built as when my Powerbook was built, that nowadays an Apple's life expectancy was considerably lower, so I fear that when I get a new computer that, though it will be more up-to-date and powerful, etc., it most probably won't last near as long as my Powerbook has. They also said that in an older computer the fan was often the first component to go bad, and if a new one couldn't be easily found, as they said was my case, then you're just left with having to get an entirely new computer.  Part of why I dislike electronic computer gadgets generally is that they are obsolete so quickly.
So, anyway, thanks very much for your information.

  • Target Disk Mode with G4 PowerBook

This week I'm installing a new hard drive in my 2003 867Mhz PB. I plan to do a fresh install from the original CDs so I will have a computer clear of much data for a trip I'm going on next week. I will apply all updates to 10.4.11 to match my Mac Pro.
    1. Can I install my '08 iLife apps onto my PowerBook? I'm the only user of both machines and normally I wouldn't care that the PB still has '06 since I rarely use it. However, the purpose of my trip is to take photos for five days. My PB doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Aperture. I want to start culling some of the photos on the trip so I won't have too many to import to Aperture when I return. Taking a bunch of DVDs isn't an option because the PB doesn't have a SuperDrive.
    2. If I can install iPhoto '08, will Aperture see the PB's iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? If I can't install '08, will Aperture see the '06 iPhoto Library in Target Disk Mode? I will not be editing any photos in iPhoto on the PB - only viewing them to delete the bad out of the collection so I won't have to import a huge collection. Obviously iPhoto won't be running on either machine when I connect them in Target Disk Mode, so technically I won't have more than one copy in use at any time.
I have a wireless home network. I could set up file sharing on my PB to transfer the photos, but I think that would be much slower than using Target Disk Mode. Since I'm taking photos for my job, and knowing the schedule of events and shoot list, I'm estimating 10G of photos minimum. That's a lot of time with a pokey old PB for transferring. I won't be taking a Firewire hard drive because it's too bulky with all the other equipment considering that the 120G hard drive I'm installing in the PB won't have many apps. I also won't have internet access so I can't upload the photos to my iDisk.
    3. Does anyone know if Target Disk Mode can be used with my PB when I upgrade my Mac Pro to Leopard? I'm not planning on installing Leopard on the PB (don't know if it meets the minimum requirements) because I don't see myself using the PB too often. By the time I need to be portable more frequently, I will buy a MBP. I hadn't turned the PB on for over a year until last week to make sure it still works for this trip. It would be more useful to buy an extra iPod to store photos than to buy Leopard for the PB.
Sorry if that seemed like a confusing bunch of questions. I tried searching the forums and Apple's support site and now I'm too exhausted to think too clearly. Thanks for any help or pointers.

I have to answer my own post as this question probably isn't allowed here. After installing the new hard drive I read the license agreement while waiting for the restore DVD to finish. I didn't bother with upgrading 10.2 which is what the PB had when new. I immediately installed Tiger and after it's done updating I'll see what software I need/want besides iWork. I'm sure Tiger isn't different in the license than Leopard. (So I'll have to plan on getting a new portable soon as I think the Target Disk Mode is faster for transferring unless I get another Firewire drive.)
But at least the new hard drive and maxed RAM has made my PB a bit more peppy. Or maybe I'm not remembering how slow it was because I haven't yet used it. I'm currently still waiting for Tiger to finish installing. I'll hold off a little longer before upgrading my Mac Pro to Leopard to find out if there are any network gotchas I should know about with my PowerBook. If I'd been using the PB, I'd know all these answers. I've just been so thrilled with my Mac Pro and 23" monitor that the PB hasn't had much appeal. But maybe I'll try to wring a little more life out of the PB.

  • Am unable to find my network in my new office with my powerbook G4

I have moved into a new office and am unable to find our new network on oir Powerbook G4. However, I also have a MacBook Pro and this can not only pick up the network but also has a very strong signal
I have NEVER had a problem finding a signal with this laptop
Is there an issue with the PowerBook G4 finding network signals at all???

  • Can I use my HP Deskwriter  550 c with my Powerbook Titanium ?

The 550C was connected via Appletalk to my old Mac. Is it possible to connect it to the Titanium ? Will it be recognized by OS X ?
    Many thanks.

Hi, Carenne. If the 550 has no ethernet port, you won't be able to use it with your Powerbook and OS X. The DIN-8 serial Mac printer port used by most old Mac-compatible inkjet printers is not available on your Tibook, and it isn't supported by OS X even if the Tibook had one.

  • External speakers with 17" Powerbook

I am having a problem getting my PB 17" to play through a set of external Logitech speakers (mm50's). They are mainly used with my iPod for travelling, but on occasions, I want to utilise them with my Powerbook. When I connected it via the USB port and the speaker connector, I got nothing. The computer continued to play through the built in speakers. I have tried through system prefs - sound - output - but it only indicates output through internal speakers - no option for adding external speakers. Any ideas?
    G5 dual 2.3GHz, 1.5Ghz 17" PB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   300 GB Maxtor External Drive

    Harry,
Are you sure these speakers include the functionality to play music via the USB connector? I've had a quick look at the Logitech site and it doesn't seem to suggest they do. (Also the fact that the USB connection isn't recognised as an audio output device reinforces this idea in my mind.)
If that is the case you'd need to run an audio cable from the output socket on the PowerBook to the auxiliary input on the speakers.

  • Can I develop apps with a PowerBook G4?

I had been wondering how to develop an app with a Powerbook g4. Will I be able to?

As all current development is targeted for Macs with Intel processors--that could be the dealbreaker. You possibly could write the code but would not be able to test it.
You might consider looking in on the Developers forum here:

to see if someone has actually made this work.

  • What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs?

    Hi!
What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs? Sell it for almost nothing? Give it away to somebody?..
I just thought you may share some ideas about it!..
It was my first portable mac (before I had a LCII), but I have to move away from a place and I have a lot of stuff..
    Thanks!!

    Give it away to somebody?..
Yes, why not? As you know, this computer is perfectly good for word processing. With a modem, it can be used for email and light web surfing during travels. Someone might even want to try to use it wirelessly.

  • Problem with My Powerbook G4

I have had problems with my 15" Powerbook G4 for the past year and a half. Suddenly it seems to only have half of the RAM that I bought for it. Initially I was terrified that I had somehow mistreated my computer and that it had lead to its malfunction, but I had never dropped the computer or done anything to damage it. I had always put it in a case when I carried it, I never spilled anything on it, I never ate near it, there was absolutely no way that I could have damaged it! And then I talked to someone who was having the exact same difficulty and they told me of the Powerbook Memory Extension program.
I went online immediately to see if my laptop met the specifications required, and was quickly told I didn't. My computer unfortunately was built just a few too soon to make it into the program.
So my question is, what do I do? I am incredibly upset that my computer no longer functions at the level at which I expected, and which I paid for. I can't have more than 1 program open at one time or the computer will freeze. So what is the solution?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
The cheapest fix is to put a 1GB RAM strip in the working memory slot. Tiger works pretty well in a 1GB environment.
Apple will be glad to swap in a replacement logic board for a fee.
There are also one or two companies that say they can repair the logic board (do a search of the discussions).

I recently updated my primary email address associated with my Apple ID account.
Now when I go to App store on my iPad it still tries to login to the App store using the old email address I had associated with the account, and naturally my password doesn't work. I can't figure out how to tell my iPad to login using the updated email address.
So in effect I'm locked out of the app store and I currently have 26 updates waiting.
I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting my IPad to iCloud with no luck.. However I cloud happens to show the correct/updated email address.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Thanks

Did you change the email for the Apple ID or did you create a new Apple ID? A new Apple ID cannot be used with content that was bought using a different Apple ID.

Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

That's what I would have thought, but even after saving the setting, as soon as I shut down my computer or log out of Mail, it automatically defaults back to 25. It's a bit frustrating.
Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of those horrible pop-up banners but still have my glass sound and number of emails in the red dot when I get an email...
These little tweaks are the only thing I HATE about upgrading my OS.

I have an older version of Adobe Digital Editions (around 3 years old) and was very happy with it.
Then I had problems with my Kobo Reader and asked a friend who works in IT to assist. She could not fix the Kobo but she messed up my Addobe. She downloaded version three and I have an account and a password - was not able to transfer my books from my reader to version three (and I don't like the lay-out - I would prefer to stay with the old version as I also loose all my download date info..)
But all the books I have bought over the last three years are in the old Adobe Digital and I cannot access them any more. When I use it I get the message "that the document is licensed to a different account. I can't even open the books on my computer.
When I go to my Kobo library, I cannot also not open my books and get the message "this doc is protected by adobe digital rights management and is not currently authorized for use with your adobe. please sign in with your authorized adobe id and try again"
I believe the problem is that I do not seem to have a digital id for my old adobe or that the Kobo is not in sync with it anymore.
can you please help me - going on vacation in three days and cannot go without books.
