I've installed firefox 4 but some add ons won't install as they say I'm still running 3.5.6 What's going on?

I'm getting messages saying "This addon requires 4.0.* you are running 3.5.6" Help>About says I'm running 4.0.1

Either an add-on (or you) set an override for your Firefox version. To clear that:
(1) Type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type '''usera''' and pause for Firefox to filter the list.
(3) Right-click and reset any bolded lines that contain "override"
Any luck?

  • I didn't finish the 8.01 upgrade, but firefox turned off some add-ons anyway. How do I know if I'm running 8.01?

I chose the apps/add-ons I wanted to keep, clicked next, and when I found out Norton security wouldn't work, I clicked the X (close button), thinking the update would NOT finish. But now I've lost my centurylink add-on, and I suspect my norton security. How do I get the pre-update version back?

  • Ran a previous version of FF, then closed and ran regular (5.0) version, but some add-ons, toolbars, and other stuff has disappeared. How can I get this stuff back?

I have been running 5.0 great for a while now, but today I tried downloading and running FF 3.6. As it was opening it stopped responding, but then I tried to force quit but then it worked and loaded up the pages I had open on 5.0 when I closed it.
I then closed the 3.6 version and ran the 5.0. I noticed a few things were gone or different...
~Several add-ons/extensions and toolbars were gone. Some of them were: Adblock Plus, Read it Later (and all its saved pages), Stumble Upon toolbar.... and more I am not sure of...
~Some of the saved sessions in my Session Manager add-on were gone.
~FF 5 seems to not be asking if I want to save my pages whenever I quit.
~The settings for how my tabs appeared has changed also... Like the color of text and where a new tab goes when I click on a link (to the right of the current tab or all the way to the right)... I am not sure if this is because of an associated add-on/extension being deleted.
UPDATE: I checked my profile folder and all of the extensions' data is all still there but FF5 is just not reading it correctly. (like adblock plus... I see the folder for it but FF5 doesn't have it on the add-on manager page when I run FF5) (The stumble upon toolbar folder is also in my profile folder but is not showing up in View->Toolbars when I actually run FF5)
Any help would be extremely appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks but I don't think this will help. Like I said, all of my add-ons were working fine and compatible until after running a previous version of FF. I am sure they are still compatible, but they are not working at all.
I even checked my profile folder and all of the extensions' data is all still there but FF5 is just not reading it correctly. (like adblock plus... I see the folder for it but FF5 doesn't have it on the add-on manager page when I run FF5)

  • How can I download Firefox 4? (my add-ons won't work with later versions!)

The newer versions of Firefox aren't supported by the U-Promise turbo-bar. I shop with U-Promise a lot, so i really need this!
I also want to be certain that it will work with Webroot Internet Security Suite.
I am using Windows 7 on this laptop.
    Thank you.

If you just need an older version for a shopping site then consider using [http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36 firefox portable 3.6]
I am guessing major security suites will maintain compatibility with current Firefox versions, but any ancillary toolbars etc may not work. I know Kasperski and Norton have just updated to be compatible with Firefox 6.
It appears Webroot's SpySweeper does work, or has been implicated in Firefox problems see [[Warning Unresponsive script]] and a quick [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/search?q=webroot search] of the forum lists many posts & seems to suggests Webroot is not working with Firefox.

  • I updated to Firefox 4 and ever since it won't open. It says the process is running but no matter how long I wait it won't open the browser and restarting or ending the process and trying again doesn't work either. Is there any way to fix this?

I thought it might be a compatibility issue with Windows Vista but the same problem happened on a computer with Windows 7. I'm not sure if the Windows 7 problem was resolved, though.

You probably have other problems but for a start right click on your task bar and click on Start Task Manager. In "Applications" if Firefox is shown, click on "End Task". In "Processes" if Firefox.exe is shown, click on "End Process" and ignore the warning and click"End Process" again. Wait for a few seconds then start Firefox in the usual way. There is a chance that this may solve your problems.
If not, you probably will need to do a complete uninstall and re-install. If you can't start Firefox you could try starting in Safe Mode - Hold down Shift key as you double click on the Firefox icon>ignore the page that opens>and Continue. If you've been able to open Firefox you could work through this Troubleshooting Procedure -

If at any stage you are not making progress, report back here for best advice on an Uninstall/Re-install which is quite likely to be necessary.

Look at the highlighted copy of your Help > About Mozilla Firefox image attached below this message.
    <u>'''Reset general user-agent'''</u>
-In Firefox, type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and press the Enter key.
-If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful).
    -Filter = general.useragent.extra.firefox
-Right-click that preference and select Reset
-Then restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)

EDIT: Sorry I meant the "Save Complete" add-on, not Download Helper.

Be sure "Add-on Bar" is checked (click on "Add-on Bar" to check or un-check)

  • READABILITY crashes Firefox. Just installed READABILITY on Firefox. It broke my plugin to WQXR, and Firefox won't re-start without a reboot everytime. ADD-ONS won't display. How can I correct this.

I installed READABILITY from its website onto a perfect functioning copy of FIREFOX (latest edition). Although the install seemed fine, READABILITY doesn't appear on the FIREFOX menu, and my plug-in connections (e.g., to WQXR-FM) no longer function.
Further, if you quit FIREFOX and try to re-start, FIREFOX won't restart unless you reboot the computer.
I tried to uninstall READABILITY, but the ADD-ONS menu won't appear.
    How can I uninstall READABILITY?

    HI Noah:
Thanks for your answer. I'm working my way through the blog, and trying to take all of the steps. Hitman Pro did find 5 trojans, and many remnants of other malware, so hopefully that will help. I'll post again when I've finished trying everything else.
I had already run Malware Bytes, It did not find/remove the sweetim toolbar, but found a different trojan. Something is up with my antivirus I think.

  • Cannot install some add-ons

I am running latest Aurora (8.0a2), though this problem also existed in 7.0a2. I have the Add-On Compatibility Reporter extension installed, so I should be able to install add-ons for older versions of Firefox, and I can.
However, some add-ons do not install. (Three that I have tried are WebRunner, the AdBlock Plus Element Hiding Helper, and Open IT Online.) The little bubble that pops up says that it is downloaded. If I go to about:addons, the status of installation is given as "Verifying," though nothing ever happens. If I restart Aurora and try to install again, I get a message that the add-on is corrupt and could not be installed.
What can I do to fix this?

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
*Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Why is Firefox having problems with add-ons since I upgraded to 3.6.9?

Firefox upgraded it self today to the latest version 3.6.9 and now my add-ons don't start. I can still see them in the Tools>Add-ons>Extensions window. But they are not running. I have allready tried to delete the extensions.ini, extensions.rdf and extensions.cache files but it didn't help. And if I click on any of the Option buttons in the Add-ons window it just freezes. Firefox keeps runing and seemes unafected but the Add-ons window doesn't respond any more. I can't close it and it even stayes open after I close Firefox.

cor-el, thank you for your reply.
I tried disabling all add-ons and resetting all user preferences but it didn't fix the problem. So I tried your second recommendation. And when I booted Firefox with the new Profile everything was OK. I added my add-ons and they worked great. The only problem was that if I closed Firefox the new profile I created disappeared. The old, corrupt profile was still there but the new one wasn't. In the end I even deleted the old, default profile. This only made the matter worse. Every newely created profile would still disapeare if I closed Firefox and without a profile Firefox wouldn't start, saying that it is already running in the background and that I should stop the process or reboot my PC. Needless to say there was no firefox.exe process running in the background and even rebooting wouldn't make Firefox start. Well not knowing what to do next I did a compete uninstall of Firefox, rebooted my PC and installed a fresh copy of Firefox 3.6.9. I imported my bookmarks and added my add-ons and (for now) everything works as it should.
Thank you again for your effort.

  • Firefox slower due to add-ons.

This is not a specific question, as it is more of a general frustration with Firefox. I notice Firefox is much faster if I disable many add-ons I have installed over the years. It seems like Firefox gets a bad wrap because some add-ons slow down Firefox. Aren't there benchmarking tools available to show before and after results of using an add-on? I am using 5 out 19 add-ons at the moment and performance is a lot faster. All this time though, I just thought Firefox sucked when disabling add-ons leads me to believe that the culprit for the slow performance is due to an add-on.
Anyway, I think if Mozilla wants to protect their reputation more, the benchmarking tools should be a tool a browser user can interact with.

Chrome has built-in a "Task Manager" It allows users to see all their extensions in use, their CPU, Memory, etc ...
It would be nice if firefox had something like this. Would make narrowing down which addon is becoming a resource hog.
I got over a dozen addons and I know at least one of them is making firefox slower the longer I keep it open. Eventually, it would eat up 50% my CPU when clicking on links. I have a dual core leading me to believe the addon is not multithreaded? Can't pin point which addon it is yet.

  • Some add-ons were disabled because of the incompatibility

    some add-ons were disabled,
like :kaspersky URL advisor 9.0.0.463 ,
    realplayer browser record plugin 1.1.5,
    and Firefox synchronisation extension 7.3.3.42
they are not working because they are incompatible with Firefox 4

Those "programs" need to be updated to work with Firefox 4.0.
For Norton, you might be waiting until May for an update.

I just got a new I phone and it requires new software for my osx version 10.5.8 but the new software won't intall. It says I need the thing I'm installing to install it?

You need to contact Apple and order and purchase the next Upgrade Disk, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, install that and then update that to 10.6.8.  You didn't give enough information to know if you need to then Upgrade that to Mountain Lion 10.8 in the Mac App Store by purchasing that,  Or even IF your computer is capable of Upgrading to 10.8.
OS X Mountain Lion system requirements
To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
    Hope this helps

  • Adobe Flash Player has Disappeared from my FF Add-ons & won't reinstall

Adobe Flash Player has Disappeared from my FF (version 4.0.1) Add-ons & won't reinstall. The Adobe Test page says that I've successfully installed the latest version (10.3.181.34) of Flash Player but after trying this 4 times, Flash just refuses to show up in my add-ons/plug-ins and now some websites are not working correctly. (Using a Win7 Home, 64-bit, SP 1 desktop.)

Because the are different products and load/use/display different types of files. You either have both installed because you have used websites that need one or the other, or you don't. Don't worry about why they are named the way they are named, that is Adobe's decision. Just accept the facts and go on with your life.
