I've installed ubuntu 11.04 on my hp pavillion media centre pc. No sound. Why

I,m dual booting my hp pavillion media centre pc withh ubuntu 11.04 and xp media centre edition. I can't get sound in ubuntu even though it correctly identifies the Creative audigy soundcard. Has anyone found a solution tothis problem.

I would make sure that both Media Player and Media Center are up-to-date and download and install the latest VLC Media Player. I would also download and install either Vista Codec Package (works with XP too) or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

  • I had the same UEFI partions after installing Ubuntu, and the Diskpart suggestion didn't work!

I have a system with a 128 GB SSD, and a WD15EARS drive. I was hoping to install Windows 8.1 PRO on a 90 Gig partition and the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 14.04 on the 30 Gig partition, and put all of the data and apps on the Western Digital Drive. This is
a brand new system using a Gigabyte B85M-D3H motherboard, 8 Gig Kingston HyperX 1600 Mhz RAM, and an i3-4330 3.5 GHz processor. My BIOS is set to UEFI and Legacy setting by default. I had previously had Windows 8.1 PRO and Ubuntu 14.04 working in a dual boot
configuration but found out I was running the 32 bit version.
I got rid of Ubuntu 32 bit by deleting the partition it was installed on and cleaning up with the Disk Manager from Windows. I created NTFS volumes on the affected partitions and downloaded the 64 bit version of the Ubuntu 14.04 .iso! The first time I tried
to burn a disk, it wasn't bootable, so I downloaded Imgburn and created a bootable CD. I ran the TRY 1st, but when I chose install the program did not recognized that Windows 8.1 Pro was previously installed. It wanted to install to the 90 Gig partition on
my SSD drive (which is where Windows 8.1 PRO) was installed. I manually redirected the install to the Western Digital Drive and the install proceeded until completion.
It was obvious that since Ubuntu did not recognize the previous install of Windows, the Computer rebooted into Ubuntu. This is almost identical to another situation listed.
The solution given was to open an administrative command line and issue the following:
    DISKPART
    RESCAN
    LIST DISK
    SELECT DISK #
    LIST PARTITION
    SELECT PARTITION x
DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE  ; and I received the following
Virtual disk service error; Delete is not allowed on the Current Boot, System, Pagefile, Crashdump, or Hybernation Volume.
is there any tool that wil wipe partitions no matter what?

    Hi,
The reason why you encountered this error is that the partition you wanted to delete is "system" partition, marked as "Active", it contains files to boot into system, so you can't delete it with the command.
And here're some useful links about dual boot Windows 8/8.1 and Ubuntu.

  • MBP won't boot - "GRUB_" - tried installing ubuntu on an external drive

so i tried installing ubuntu netbook remix onto an external drive, and upon restarting my MBP won't boot to my internal HDD, once it displayed "GRUB_" with a blinking cursor, but is otherwise unresponsive.
now i just get the folder with the ? on it.
I've run disk util, repair permission, repair disk and still no luck.
i can boot the MBP into target disk mode and see the HDD on my other system and all appears to be good, and if i boot to the install dvd, the HDD shows up under the "startup disk" menu, but it just doesn't boot.
any thoughts on how to fix this?

So I have an imac that I have had for about 3yrs. About several months ago, it started acting a little strange, it wouldnt pick up the mouse or the keyboard at times even thought they were plugged in properly to the usb port, sometimes both would work sometimes one or the other would work and other times they worked fine. About a month or 2 ago, I went to turn my imac on and it got to the screen where the little circular icon pops up implying it is loading, stayed that way for 2-3min then turned of and turned itself back on and did the same thing, made the apple sound got to the load screen turned of after 2-3min then turned back on, it has been doing that for the past month. What do I do?

  • Installing Ubuntu 12.04.1 on a partition MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
I am attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my internal hard-drive on a brand new MacBook Pro. I have managed to partition the hard drive ok. But when it cam to attempting to install the alternative operating software on it. I arrived at a purple screen of death.
I am using an installation disk that I burnt myself from my previous Mac. After I partitioned the Hard Drive using the disk utility I input the disk into the computer and then restarted the computer holding down the alt button to boot into the other partition. I reached the slection stage and there were four options. The Macintosh HD, the new partition on the hard drive, and two disk icons, one labelled Windows and the other labelled something else (I can't quite remember). I clicked on the fourth option and was guided to a purple screen that said.
    Try ubuntu without installing
    Install Ubuntu
and one other option which again I cant remember.
I clicked on install Ubuntu and my computer screen went blank and everything has now stopped reponding to anything I try and do. I have tried the normal escape routines but nothing happens. What is happeneing and how can I get control of the computer back, and finally what is the correct way of installing Ubuntu on the section of the hard drive. HELP!
    Thank You.

Sorry for your troubles but what is wrong with OS X? The only other OS that Apple supports being installed on a Mac computer is Windows and for the newest versions of OS X only Windows 7.
You could install all different types of OSs into a virtual machine program like VMware Fusion, Parallels or Virtualbox.
Or maybe you should of bought a Windows PC Notebook as with them you aren't restricted in what OS can be installed natively.

  • I am tryed to install ubuntu 14.4 lts along with windows 8.1 in my HP 2000 - 2d49tu

I am tryed to install ubuntu 14.4 lts along with windows 8.1 in my  HP 2000 - 2d49tu, but ubuntu does not detect windows 8.1 in the system

It is critically important for you to have created Recovery media before attempting to create a dual boot installation. Make sure that it works by performing a Factory Image recovery.
Make sure that the Ubuntu type matches the Windows 8,1 type. That is critical for a dual boot installation.
A 64-bit OS type will see or recognize other 32 and 64-bit operating system.
If you have a 32-bit Ubuntu it will not see Windows 8.1 as being present.
A 64-bit version of Ubuntu will work well with a 64 or 32-bit version of Windows 8.1.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102

    Hello
I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.

    Hi
I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
    Any guidance would be welcome.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on Mac?

I was wondering about Ubuntu and learning more about it.
I used Boot Camp once to install Windows 7 Ultimate, but I wasn't satisfied with Windows 7, so I removed it. I thought Windows 7 was really boring and I missed many of the games included with XP that were excluded.
So how do you install Ubuntu on a Mac?
I've heard of using virtual software to install Ubuntu, but is it possible to install Ubuntu via Boot Camp?
    Here's my system info:
    15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009)
Mac OS X v10.6.7 Snow Leopard
Let me know what I need to get started

    Hi,
the Ubuntu community has a very good place to start here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
Nonetheless I would propose to start with the free VirtualBox as install/use Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine.
If you don't like it it is easier to remove...

  • How do I install Ubuntu GNU/Linux on my iMac G4?

  • Installing ubuntu 13.04 on mac?

I installed windows 8 (64bit) beside OSX (10.8.3) thorugh BootCamp 5. i want to install ubuntu 13.04 beside my OSX and Windows. Can anyone give me some help how can i do it?

They all perform similarly... they've all had years to mature at this point.  It's more about refinement and "bells and whistles".  I prefer VirtualBox primarily because it is free and fully functional.  The good thing is that when it gets updated, you can get the latest version without having to pay for an upgrade.  I also use it on quite a few machines... Macs and PCs.  I don't want to have to worry about licensing multiple machines for a pay product.  I will usually recommend that someone try VirtualBox to see if it will meet their needs.  It's free, so no harm done if you don't like it.  Parallels and Fusion are great products and offer some more features with respect to integration with the host OS.  I'm personally not a big fan of that, but that's more of a preference on my part.

  • Problem installing ubuntu in virtual box

Hello lately i tried installing ubuntu LTS in virtual box 3.2 using an ISO image downloaded in hard disk but every time i try to run it, it says upgrade it to new ubuntu 10.04 LTS though this is the same one i installed. The softwares which i downloaded earlier are all gone. What might be the reason for this please do let me know.........I was willing to try ubuntu but this is giving me a headache now.
    Thanks for any help afforded

    Sanjaya

    Thanks for your reply,
Yeah i too guessed that the problem might be that it is booting from the iso image in the hard disk so i just moved it to another lokation as i did not know how to unmount the image and now after i have done so the problem of self rebooting is gone atleast for now. Sorry i could not make it much clear was to what the problem was, thanks anyways.

  • Used Boot Camp to install Ubuntu, now Boot Camp is out of date, want to rid

A while ago I used Boot Camp to install Ubuntu, but now Boot Camp won't start because I don't have 10.5. How do I delete and restore my Ubuntu portion back to OS X

in system settings, go to the time/date, and uncheck the "Automatically set time" option, and manually set the date to sometime in September 2007. You should be able to use the Beta version of Boot Camp to remove your second partition and restore your disk.

  • Can I install Ubuntu in the SSD of Satellite U940-sp4103gl?

Please help me as soon as possible.
    These are my questions:
Can I install ubuntu in the ssd of Toshiba u940-sp4103gl?
    How to do that?
This is urgent, I'll appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

    Hi there
    Sorry for a late reply!
Yes, you can install any late Linux distro on the SSD.
But You need to remove the RAID-config first (suggest using the DISKS utility).
Then you'll have SDA and SDB - depending on BIOS setup the SSD will get either one.
Point the installer to the SSD but make sure to format and set the HDD as your HOME mount point.
That will give you a unit with SSD performance but a large storage.
