I've just received a defective ipod? what exactly am I supposed to do ?

I've spend my entire day fixing an ipod i received yesterday
As I'm writing, I've received my video ipod of 30gb yesterday. Back then, I followed the instructions carefully , and I installed I-tunes and Ipod updater as instructed. I transfered some of my musics and pictures in the ipod and transfered a short video that I had converted first. My computer Toshiba satellite M45-S169 is well known for its performances, so obviously it incorporates USB 2.0 ports. Actually, all seemed fine.
I woke up this morning and went out with my ipod. Arrived at the library, I felt like using a machintosh..when I turned on the screen of the MAC, at the same time my ipod froze. I was speechless, the blacklight was on and I couldn't turn it off. I did what was instructed in the support site, which means that I reseted it. Afterwards, a sad ipod icon appeared on the screen. Once again I tried what was instructed but I couldn't put my ipod into disk mode. So, I plugged it in my computer trying to restore or update it as instructed but my computer didn't recognize it anymore. So, I re-installed all the softwares, and I updated them. Then, I restarted my computer but it didn't work. Finally, I did the last possible solution; it was said on the website that it might be my battery, so I let it charge during 1 to 2 hours but it wouldn't charge.
whenever I plug the ipod in the computer I see a black screen with an apple, then it shifts to a screen with a small battery with an exclamation point, which quickly shifts into a discharged battery with a lightning bolt, which last about 1min(it depends) before shifting to the screen with a sad Ipod icon with the blacklight on, and the apple screen once again. It does it over and over ...
Please help!!
Even though I'm pretty sure you will not have an answer considering that i have spend all my day on it.
I guess i will just ship it back with my big thanks to apple.

Should I prosecute apple ? Excuse me, i'm just crying the money I have spend months to earn in order to buy this crap. A lot of struggle to buy it,a lot of struggle to fix it, and nothing in return. It is sad, isn't it ?
I was really impatient to receive my ipod. I paid it, and I trusted apple. However, I was wrong. The first product apple that I bought just doesn't work whereas I was starting to be interested in others Apple products. I've lost my time on internet reading about the features of the ipod 5th generation 30go, which are badly detailed. I'm not complaining about the fact that the ipod is not perfect, which I understand. I'm complaining about the fact that apple don't aware his consumers of the high frequence of bugs. I don't find it quite professional. So, when a ipod froze, we think that it is uncommon before reading the articles throughout the support website and find out that it is considered as 'normal' to encounter those kind of issues.

First, I will try to address the iPod issue: If youve tried EVERYTHING on the website, your only other option is probably to contact Apple, I recommend by phone, and informing them of the problem. You are covered by warranty and therefore they are liable to assist you. Try that and come back with a status update
Now I will address your attitude about it:Its absolutely understandable to be upset over something like this, especially with such an expensive product, but you are generalizing far to much. You may think Apple is being unproffesional by not warning potential buyers of the iPods common faults, but do you really think they would? they are out to sell these things, they arent going to point out the bad in their product. And not all iPods have problems, in fact only a fraction do. That gopes for the rest o Apples products as well. You are too hasty assuming all Apple products are junk, and one of many reasons as to why that is unfair of you is becuase you dont own any other Apple products.

    Hi, I just got my new ipod and pluged it in and started syncing after I updated it. I have a nano and it updated as well. I want the same music on my nano as my 60 gig. on the 60 I told it to put everything on and on the nano, just the selected playlists. Worked like a champ. Just follow the instructions when you sync it for the update. It is is new, you will probably not have any of the bugs that existing systems have, At least that is what I experienced and have heard from other users.

  • Just received my 3th iPod from mail-in repair, and afraid to use it.

    I bought my iPod in june 2005. I remember having trouble putting music on it for the first time. After i had put some songs on it RealPlayer showed that there was memory taken, but didnt show any songs on it. I dont remember how, but i solved it and my iPod worked.
    Till september. I started it up with the apple symbol one time. And i got the language selection screen first, and then i saw that all my music was GONE! I took it back to the shop where i bought it (no apple store, just a random one). They tried to reset it, but they told me that it got stuck while trying. So they mailed in repaired it for me. And i got a new one that worked properly!
    But in november, it started to get stuck while playing songs, i reset my iPod with the menu and middle button every time it happened. It happened more and more, and in december i got the sad iPod symbol for th first time. But sometimes it worked again, so i listened to it for maybe 2 more weeks. In those 2 weeks i got the sad iPod symbol loads of times. And for the second time, all my music got deleted! (I looked this up on the apple support site, and that isn't supposed to happen all of a sudden!!!! So why does it happen to me TWO times????)
    After those two weeks I went to the support site and did everything there. reset it, format it, install the new software etc. No use.
    most of the times my computer got stuck when i attached my iPod to it.
    So i mailed in repaired that one too.
    Now I have a new one. But i dont want it to go sad and messed up again! What is wrong with me! why do all MY iPods break?
    I would very much like to know what I do wrong before i'm going to use my new iPod to make sure this one lasts!
    Can anyone help me? Is it my computer? Is it because i use RealPlayer? Or do i just attracted iPods with production failyers?

    So, what exactly are you supposed to do with a mac mini ? Im pretty much of a straight up PC guy (although that may change as I played around with my nikon d50 and some macs last year and liked the results of my photos), but a friend has a mac mini set up in his living room that from what I see he uses more or less as jukebox. Is the mac mini just a multi media device, or can it do more advnaced things like working with digital photos, (i,e, photoshop), etc.

    Yeah, it fooled me allright (thats an understatement), I really had no idea what to make of it, was it a computer, just a media machine, etc....I dont follow the latest technology at all, so when I saw my friends mac mini hooked up to his tv/monitor, and able to access all his movie and media files in addition to surfing the internet, I was pretty dumbfounded that all that could be done with such a little box. I suppose I could also do all that with my Dell PC also, but I like the small footprint of the mac mini.
    Anyway, just ordered the 2 gig mini with 2 gigs of RAM, hopefully it will work out ok for me. All I really want to use it for is to load my music and DVD collection on there, surf the web, and do some digital photoediting...Im not that much of a gamer, so its lack of ability on that regard doesnt bother me.
    Im actually kind of looking forward to getting a mac again, the Dell PC and Dell laptop I have are only about two years old, but they are slow as heck due to spyware and other nasties....
    By the way, I did have a chance to check out some imacs last fall, Im not sure if it was me or not, but macs sure do seem to display graphics better than PC's (at least my PC anyway)...

    I don't think that you're being unreasonable but I also don't think you'll get anywhere. I don't object to such an inconvenience if a problem occurs after purchase. However, I have a serious issue with having been sold a defective product.

    Jake, you can charge with a firewire cable but you won't be able to sync or transfer.
    The Classic has a polycarbonate screen. Only the iPhone (Touch?) has a glass one.

    Yes. You can set the payment method to "None" once you log into iTunes on your PC/Mac. I have it set up this way.

    You said you restored the iPod. Was the restore successful, that is, it went though all the steps without errors?
    Try a restore to factory settings/new iPod if yuhave not doe so so far.
    Are you  using the headphones that came with the iPod? Are you inserting the plug fully
    Have you tried another set of headphones in the iPod?
    The speaker is not that loud.

    Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
    Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iOS device connect before?
    Try the following to rule out a software problem:                
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
    .- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network      
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    What type network is yu router set up for? The 4G iPod can only connect and see 2.4 GHZ networl like B, G and the 2,4 GHz N. There is also a 5 GHz N but the iPod will not even seethat network.
