I've loaded my iphoto with 10k pics-How do I backup photos to an external?

I'm still on iphoto4 because I have no space to install iphoto6 ! I have an ibook 60 gb, and I am up to 52 gb because I have 10,000 pictures on my iphoto. (I've even erased my itunes for the time being!).
I want to backup my library to an external drive so that I free enough space to install iphoto6, then restore some of the more recent photos I have. What is the best way to do this? I'm a dot mac member so I have Backup, but haven't used it yet, and have a portable 80gb Firelite. Should I back up using this program, or do I drag my whole album into the Firelite icon ont he desktop? Approximately how long will it take? I tried it yesterday and it took more than an hour so I just quit the backup.
Meanwhile, my iphoto is acting up--it takes so long to start a slideshow after I've clicked on it (2-3 minutes), and when it does, it sometimes hangs in mid-slideshow. Some albums will play only the first slide and then quit. Why is this happening? is it because of the amount of photos I have on it? Or is my mac going to crash soon? ohno..please don't!

my next question would be: what is the best and efficient way to archive photos, to be used again later in iphoto when I need certain rolls only, and not the whole library displayed. What have been some of your "best practices".

IPhoto and multiple users - how to best manage photos across multiple users

I'm trying to fiure out the best way to setup photo storage on my new iMac. I've been a mac user for many years but never used iPhoto, just managed the photos in the finder and dated the folder/events. I use Photoshop and other image editing apps from time to time too.
My biggest difficulty I'm running into is both my wife an I take a lot of pictures on our phones. We'd like to be able to access them equally but since we are set up as two diffenent users, I don't know the best way to download and access them.
Can anyone advise me if this is a good setup, or would ven work?

can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?

Many people using the Shared Folder find that they have permissions issues which mean that they 'other' user can't see some part of the Library. Therefore, if you want to share the Library in that way it's best moved to an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.

If you set this up corrrectly - You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You will need to do this in both accounts.

TM can be set to back up externals. There are other options too, of course.

Yes. Just plug in the extenal and point iPhoto at the external from the new machine.

Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

How do I stop iphoto from creating events automatically when I import photos from an external hard drive?

IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos and when I merge events and then go to finder>all images, I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....I try to delete the extra copies but then the albums or events also get affected, even if there is one copy of each photo left in all images...have someone had this problem?

This is how iPhoto works. Every photo is in an Event. Events are the basic organisation of the Library. Every import means at least one new Event. Yes you can merge Events after import and so on, but there is at least one Event created at each import.

No it hasn't. It hs created versions of the photos, not copies. There will be a couple of thumbnails for viewing in the iPhoto Window plus the Master and then a edited version for pics that are modified. The icons for each of these may be similar but they are not copies - for a start they are different sizes - and all are required for iPhoto to work.

How can I store photos on an external hard drive and still manage w IPhoto?

The hard drive on my MacBook is almost full and I want to move my photos to an external hard drive. Can I do this and still manage and organize the photos using I Photo? I can export the photos, but when I do I lose the organization (Events, Albums, etc.) that are in I Photo. With my new DSLR camera the photos (JPEGS) are really big and I am quickly running out of storage on the MacBook. Thanks in advance for you help.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Hi There,
I just replaced my iMac (intel) HD which was running Mac OSX 10.4. I have a full network backup (and several incrementals) created by the 10.4 backup utility.
I installed a new HD and Snow Leopard and I now need to restore my iPhoto libary. When I go into iPhoto to search backups, Time Machine opens up with but will not access the network backup.
Can someone tell me how to restore my full, and subsequent incremental, backups to iLife 09?

Fabulous! You were right. Once I installed the iDisk backup app, I was able to restore the photos. HOWEVER, one more thing if you don't mind. While I can see the images on the Mac, they are not showing up in iPhoto. I was hoping to see the catalog/database appear in iPhoto after I restored the file. Is there something I'm doing wrong as it relates to iPhoto 09 seeing the restored images? The path looks right in relation to where the restore placed them.

Please follow the below instructions.
In the Finder, navigate to your iPhoto package file. By default, it's located in /Users/[user name]/Pictures, and it's called iPhoto Library.
Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
A Finder window opens that shows the contents of the package file. The Masters folder contains all of the photos that are in iPhoto. However, Photoshop cannot access this folder.
Control-click the folder named Masters and choose Duplicate.
Drag the folder named "Masters copy" from the iPhoto Library Finder window to your Desktop. Now you can open images from the desktop in Photoshop.

How do I transfer photos from an external drive, taken from a defunct computer with Snow Leopard, to one operating with Mountain Lion?

My late 2007 MacBook Pro, with a replacement 500 GB drive and updated to Snow Leopard, died. The extracted drive works in an external drive case, so all the files are there. Most of the files were transferred from a time machine backup to a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion. However, about a week's worth of files were missing from the Time Machine backup, due to traveling. I would like to copy just those files, mostly pictures, from the original drive to the new system. However, when I try to use iPhoto to get to the image files on the external drive, the system says the iPhoto information must be updated to the new system and, once done, they cannot be accessed with an old one. One concern is that updating the iPhoto information on the external drive might go wrong and make the files inaccessible. If there were some way to just have the underlying image files identified and copied, that would be most comfortable for me. .Any advice?

1 - updating your iPhoto library does not make photos inaccessible - it does update the iPhoto database so that you have to have the current version of iPhoto to open the library - however the photos are in the database and can be accessed via the finder anytime
2 - you do not memtion what version of iPhoto you had - the original photos are in the masters (or original) folder which can be accessed by right clicking on the iPhoto library and showing package contents - Be sure NOT to make any changes to the library)

iPhoto is not a photo viewer, it's a photo manager with non-destructive processing. If you want a photo viewer, check put Preview.

iPhoto should have prompted you after it finished the import, asking if you want to delete. It does in mine -- version 9.5.1
One way to quickly delete the photos still on your phone is to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture. It allows you to select and delete photos from the camera roll without importing them via Image Capture.

Hello all!
Before iOS 8, we had two separate photo albums - Photo Stream (for iCloud) and Camera Roll (for photos on your iPhone).
When you took a photo, the photo went into both albums. This was handy, as when i found my memory running low, I could delete photos from my Camera Roll, yet they will still be on my Photo Stream.
However, with the iOS 8 update, apparently they thought this was too confusing for everyone and therefore have merged it all into the collections/moments photo viewer.
So, my question is, is there a way that I can delete photos from my phone without deleting them from my iCloud, seeing as they are merged into one?

The easiest way I find to remove a few songs for the nano is to go into Ipod preferences and select "only sync checked songs" and the uncheck songs you don't want. How are you trying to transfer it and what are your setting on iTunes. I'm not on a computer that has iTunes at the moment so I'm going from memory and similar issue. If iTunes is set to sync music then I don't think you can select and drag, if set to manual manage music then you can. Also make sure you are dragging to music on the iPhone.
