I've lost Desktop under the Places column in Finder

I used to have Desktop showing up in the LHS of the Finder in the Places column but now it is not showing up. It is a drag not to have it to show up because I use Desktop the most. Now I have to click on the home folder and then search for Desktop. The extra step is a nuisance. I can't remember what I did to remove it. I want to restore Desktop in Places. How do I do that? Thanks for answers. I am running OS 10.60.

I used to have Desktop showing up in the LHS of the Finder in the Places column but now it is not showing up.
Go to your home folder, grab the Desktop folder and drag it back to the Places section on the sidebar.
Of course, note that you shouldn't keep much on your desktop. The more you have there, the slower your machine will get. Also, note that you can use one of the Exposé keystrokes to reveal the real desktop at any time, no matter how many windows are open. (See System Preferences -> Exposé & Spaces.) You may find that these two things reduce or eliminate the usefulness of having the Desktop folder on the sidebar.
I can't remember what I did to remove it.
You just dragged it off the sidebar.
I am running OS 10.60.
There's no 10.60. There's 10.6.0, which I assume is what you meant, but note that you really should upgrade as soon as possible, as there's a very serious bug in 10.6.0 (and 10.6.1) that can cause you to lose all your data, involving use of the guest account. Verify your hard drive and repair permissions using Disk Utility, disconnect all peripherals other than keyboard and mouse and choose Software Update from the Apple menu, then let it do its thing.
Edit: Oh, and of course, be sure that you have a minimum of two backups before proceeding! See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for assistance.

  • A Characteristci appears twice under the Rows Column on the left hand side.

    Hi All,
According to the requirement , there are 2 Material Numbers ,1 of them is used for Compounding, which is not required in the Report, but as it is used for Compounding ,we need to place that in the rows.
We have put tat in "NO DISPLAY" mode, but  Material Number appears twice under the Rows  column, on the left hand side of the screen, in the Portal when we execute the Report. How Can we have to display only 1 Material Number on the left hand side of the screen?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sravani

the left hand side of the screen is reakky vague....you should be more specific...
Probably you need to filter out the compounding characteristics in the global filter area.
    Thanks...

  • Microsoft told us to include the iPad's in the true-up as a fully qualified desktop under the Enterprise Agreement?

    Hi,
I work at Oil company in the UAE and we wanted to use iPads at  work but Microsoft replied with the following & I wanted to verify this from your side:
Weather iPad is owned by the user or the company, it will require proper softwarelicense right to access Microsoft Software in use by your organization. Beloware different usage scenarios and required licenses:
    iPadwill be used to access
    -       exchangeEmail”: each iPad will require a Windows Server Device CAL, Exchange DeviceCAL, Exchange Enterprise Device CAL*, and Forefront for Exchange CAL*
    -       Intranetrunning IIS only: each iPad will require a Windows Server Device CAL
    -       Portalrunning SharePoint: each iPad will require a Windows Server Device CAL, SQLDevice CAL, SharePoint Standard Device CAL, SharePoint Enterprise Device CAL,and Forefront for SharePoint CAL*
    -       InternalBusiness Applications: Windows Server Device CAL, SQL Device CAL, any other CALused by this application
    -       MicrosoftOffice: each iPad will require and Office license except for 1-1 remote access
“Notethat for Exchange Email access, this will apply even if the user will use iPademail client, outlook web access, Outlook via HVD or RDS.
*requiredif this product is in use
As theenterprise agreement doesn’t include individual CAL’s. there are three ways toacquire those licenses:
    -       Includethe iPad’s in the true-up as a fully qualified desktop under the EnterpriseAgreement
    -       Acquiringthe Enterprise CAL only & SQL CAL for those devices under the EA. We willneed to approve an exception to do that. Please advise me the quantity. Thisscenario will apply only if Office will not be used with the iPad or will beused in 1-1 Remote Access scenario.
    -       Signa separate Select agreement to acquire the individual CAL’s with SA.

    Thank you

This option is where the work PC is running back in the office and theend user is “tunnelling in” from another PC. The later introduced roamingrights allows access to virtualized Office, which is run from a server, versusrunning on the licensed PC that existed prior to roaming use rights"

  • Macbook Icon under the device column is gone.

I accidentally poofed the Macbook icon under the device column, and I can't seem to find it. The Macbook also had "(2)" appended after it. Mine looked like this: "Zachary Lawrence's Macbook (2)"
How do I get that appended (2) to go away, and how do I get the icon back into my side bar?

-Click on the Finder icon in the dock.
-From the menu bar, select Finder->Preferences
-In the toolbar, click on the Sidebar tab.
-Check the box for "Hard Drives" under devices.

  • File association and the Kind column in Finder. Bug?

Some time ago I installed BBEdit - an application for editing web source code such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
Post install, I noted that Finder showed in the Kind column "BBEdit text document". This was entirely correct and as expected.
I have now uninstalled BBEdit (decided not to buy it) as follows:-
    Moved the application to Trash
    Removed ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit
    Removed ~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.*
I then noticed that the Kind column in Finder still indicated "BBEdit text document" for files with .js, .css and .html extensions.
This seemed wrong (obviously) so I tried this...
Right-click on a .js file and hold Option key to reveal "Always open with". I selected Dashcode.
Now the situation is quite bizarre...
When I double-click any .js file to open it, Dashcode runs. That is a good thing.
However, the Finder Kind column still indicates "BBEdit text document".
    Why?

How about if you right click (control click) in the column header area to open the drop down menu.  Can you get back to the default KInd.
if Kind is checked, uncheck it. Relaunch Finder. >ForceQuit>Finder>Relaunch
Then go back to the drop down and recheck your column for  Kind.

  • A way to get the columns to slide under the first column (to create ease in seeing the 1st column info while using the other columns)

I notice in using the checkbook register template, you reach a certain point and the rows slide under the top row or two.  I there a way to make that happen with the columns. I'm setting up a student attendence roster (is there a template for that?) and I want to be able to read the student name (1st column) and at the same time read the dates at the end of the month or year (subsequent columns)

Hi. Freeze is used for years in Spreadsheets litterature
If you didn't know the Numbers User Guide, maybe you don't know iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide which is a powerful resource to learn which functions are available and how to use them.
As they are PDFs, searching something in them is really easy.

Since I upgrade my iMac to Yosemite I see "iMac" followed by a long number under "Shared" in the navigatie column of the Finder. Every day a new item is added with the same name and number, but followed by (1), (2) etc.
    I use Time Machine.

I suffered with numbers next to my unit's name in Shared Devices, Finder Pane.
What I did was turned off my Time Capsule and whilst it was off I renamed my Macbook Pro in System Preferences / Shared.
I turned on the Time Capsule and thus far, 12 hours later the change has stuck.
There are many people suffering this bug, it's to do with ghosting on your network... Where your current machine see's itself as a ghost, hence you get a numbered mac...???

  • How to delete items in the "Places" list in Finder?

In Finder, in the left column, I have several entries under "Places" which do not belong on this MacMini. When I click on them I get the message "The volume for xxxx cannot be found". Nor can I delete them from "places". I also fear that this is the reason that the MacMini now is exceedingly slow, i.e. spinning color wheels on end.
These items in "Places" might have gotten on the Mini when I did some synchronization via .Mac with my PowerBook (where these Places make sense), but I would not have any idea which setting could have caused this.
Any pointers will be highly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Veit

Thanks for this solution! Why did I never try it?

  • What sets the 'Kind' column in Finder windows?

Since installing Snow leopard, I have been finding that just inserting a flash card containing Olympus raw image files into a USB card reader and displaying the contents, shows a strange phrase in the Kind column: "Lightzone transform format".
Lightzone is one of several photo processing applications in my Applications folder, but the same column used to show the more general "Olympus raw file" in the Kind column.
This is causing me trouble when I set iPhoto to use an external editor.

I tried this, and first I was encouraged, and then I was disappointed.
I shut down all running programs and then did the terminal operation you recommended. Then I restarted.
I then put a flash card in a reader abnd opened it in the Finder. I was relieved to see that the Kind column read "Olympus raw file" as it should. I then set up iPhoto to use Olympus Stdio 2 as the external editor. I imported this set of image files (all of them on the card) into iPhoto, and then double-clicked one.
I saw a message window with the following: The document P1234.ORF could not be opened. Olympus Studio 2 cannot open files in the "Preview.app Document" format.
This turn of events was the whole reason that I needed to correct this symptom (the wrong label in the Kind column, I thought). Note that I had in the past used the Information panel on a .ORF file to change 'Open with' to preview.app. but I had hoped that this Terminal operation would have kept this from propagating to these new files, that had never been opened in Preview, but only imported ointo iPhoto.

  • Is there a way to make the last column in finder auto expand?

I know that you can double click the double bar at the bottom right . . . but can't the finder be set to auto expand on the last column so i don't have to click that thing every time i wish to see the long named files ?
Perhaps i should just use Bridge but it seems so slow and cumbersome compared to Finder.
    thanks for any advice.
PS . . . is this available on the newest OS . . . going to upgrade one of these days.

No, the finder's column view does not have auto resizing columns.
It does have auto condensing of file names for the narrow display.
Which is what you are trying to overcome.
To accomplish your task, switch to list view.
Select your file. Then switch back to column view.
The trick is to learn your FINDER command key short cuts.
    command 1 = icon view
    command 2 = list view
    command 3 = column view.
So you would press [command] and [3] to view the columns.
Navigate about until you get a column of unhelpfully condensed names.
Switch to list view by pressing [command] and [2]
Select the file from the fully displayed names list.
    At this point you can press [command] [down arrow] OR [command] [o] to enter/open the selected item;
or Switch back to column view by pressing [command] and [3] then continue browsing deeper.

  • How do I open a folder on my desktop and avoid getting the left hand column with devices shared, etc and the other column with my desktop lists?

I just want to see the contents of the folder not all the other columns!

Finder->View-Hide Sidebar (⌘⌥ S). Once set, ⌘J and select Use as Defaults. That'll ensure all newly opened windows have that setting.

  • Song title is incorrect in the "NAME" column in itunes, but correct at the top of the page for the song playing.

All of a sudden most of the song titles under the "NAME" column in itunes is incorrect.   When I click on the file name it plays a different song but it points to the correct song elsewhere on the list.   Also it shows the correct song name at the top of the screen.  Is it possible to get the files under the NAME column to point to the right song?  This is happening on my PC windows 7.

Move your mouse to the top of the Firefox window, then right click.
You will see a menu of the available toolbars. Select '''''Customize'''''.
In the new window, look for the icon. When you find if, hold down
the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be.
You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some
    icons are locked in place.
