I am in the process of transferring files from PC to laptop - in a big clear out, I deleted (for good) my music file. I didnt realise my itunes libary was lcoated within this and now my entire itunes library has gone! All my tracks are still on my ipod but I cant seem to upload them from ipod to itunes library - please help, Im desperate!

The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. No backup is a huge mistake.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

I did the same XP to Windows 7 upgrade about 18 months ago. I decided to keep iTunes permanently on the external drive than the c drive to save c: drive space.
ITunes database has pointers to MP3 files located in Artist's directories. If you want to use a different location than the default C:\ drive for iTunes, then you need to recreate the Itunes database by deleting all songs in iTunes, then change the default location for iTunes files to your external drive. Then import the MP3 files from the external drive into the empty iTunes database through the iTunes import facility.
If you screw up the timing of the import and find you have multiple iTunes directories (instead of just the default location), then iTunes has a new feature to consolidate all iTunes MP3 files back into the central default location. In iTunes, FILE, LIBRARY, ORGANIZE LIBRARY, then CONSOLIDATE FILES.
To change the default directory for MP3 files, in Tunes go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED and then CHANGE the location to where you want the Itunes MP3 files to be located (including the iTunes subdirectory under which all the artist directories are held. Mine are on the F: drive or whatever your computer states is your drive assignment for the external drive.
Note iTunes 10.5 has many problems that Apple hopefully are working on....we seem to have gone backwards on working components in this iCloud based release. So maybe keep on using old computer until 10.6 is released.

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below). For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. I have lost my itunes library after updating it and keep getting a message saying MSVCR80.dll is not installed when I try to uninstall/reinstall it???

I have lost my itunes library after updating it. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling it and it gets so far then tells me that it cannot be installed because MSVCR80.dll is not installed on my pc. I have no idea what this is and have googled it, followed links to sites that say they can fix it, only for them to scan, tell me I have 3 thousand issues and then want me to pay $30 dollars to fix it for me. This message also appears on firing up my pc too.

I've been through the exact same thing and cannot seem to get an answer here. When you go to Manage Storage, does it have something at the top like "19.1 GB of 25 GB available"? I only have a Mail account with 5.3 GB in it and a Backups account with 553 MB in it. Obviously, these don't add up to 19.1 GB. There was no change in any of these numbers when I deleted all the same files you mention. With the free Mobile Me storage expiring next month, this is something I'm pretty concerned about.

Ipod syncing is not one way. You just have to know what to do...
I can see you use windows. Connect ipod to pc, but don't install or dont open itunes - dont alow itunes to sync automaticly). Then open explorer, enable hidden files, open your ipod (as you would any disc) open hidden file with strange names and copy all of them on your new hard drive. Then drag all this strange-named files in your itunes...woooo...now those strange names become your songs...it is magick

Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library(.itl) as iTunes Library Corrupt(.itl) and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library(.itl) then start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library. Newer Mac & Windows libraries use the .itl extension. A library initially created on an older iTunes for Mac version might not.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
You should never update without making sure your backup copy of your computer is up to date.
You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod to computer: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

I did this with my ipod nano and it worked just fine. But with my wife's ipod nano, I can't find the music folder in her ipod when I open it up by double-clicking on "My computer". I can see a contacts folder and a couple of others ("calendar" as I recall" and something else), but no music folder that I can copy.
Any suggestions, anyone???

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Lost my itune library and content on my window based laptop

I have lost my iTunes library (all songs, playlist, artist etc.) and do not have backup. I have approx. 80% of my library on my iphone5 and ipod nano. Thanks for your help. You were a big help and saved me hundred of hours in re-creating my itunes library of thousands of songs by downloading them again. I managed to get my purchases back using the instructions you provided and used the listing of software providers to download iRip and recover the rest of my music and playlists from both my iphone and ipod (I had different playlist on each). I basically recovered 99% of what I had lost so that was a huge help. Once you download iRip you really do use only one click to restore your iTunes library and playlists - super easy. Thanks again.
