I've lost OpenGL support with KVM switch. Help!

I have a Win7 64 machine and an XP machine at work. I installed an Iomega KVM switch to use the same monitor/keyboard/mouse with both computers. Problem is, once I installed the KVM, Photoshop can't detect my video card, so I lose OpenGL support. Very irritating. Anyone had this problem and/or know of a solution? Thanks!

Did you reboot Windows after plugging the monitor into the computer?
On another note, it's possible a recent video driver update changed the behavior.  Photoshop queries the OpenGL system for its capabilities, and if something's gotten broken Photoshop might not allow the OpenGL operations.  What video card do you have?
There is a workaround you can try - a registry tweak - that will instruct Photoshop to use OpenGL calls anyway:
Go to this site:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4056
Download the file and extract AllowOldGPUS_ON.reg.  You don't say which version of Photoshop you're using, but if it's CS4 the file is good to use as is.  If CS5 then you'll need to edit the file with a text editor to change 11.0 to 12.0.  Make sure you're an Administrator and double click the file to enter it into your registry.

  • Monitor blacks out when booting with KVM Switch in the middle

    Hi
I have attached my Xserve with an iMac G5 to a KVM Switch. When I boot up the Xserve the monitor blacks out after the apple logo.
I know that the Xserve tries to autodetect the monitor. Apparently it fails in its job when the KVM is in the middle. Everything works well when I remove the KVM and connect the monitor directly to Xserve.
Any ideas how do I disable the monitor autodetect feature - or something?
Xserve (intel) Mac OS X (10.4.1) dkvm-4u KVM switch

    Hi all
I did try that. No luck.. Strangely enough, I realized that when the server boots up, the login screen defaults to 85HZ refresh rate. I found a site that explains the plist file that you can change to force it to 60HZ. What is weird it if I boot the Mac connected to another LCD, then move the cable to the KVM, it works. It almost seems like when the mac is booting, it sends some sort of signal just before the login screen comes up, that screws up this KVM. Tried updating firmware, still in the process of speaking with the KVM support people...
    very strange..

  • Mac mini with KVM switch

I'm thinking of getting a Mac mini, but I need my Windows PC for some apps that aren't available on Mac and some other stuff. I can't afford to get a large monitor for a Mini if I get one, but my current PC has a big flat panel display.I noticed the KVM cable way of moving your stuff (a cale taht lets peripherals like monitors, keyboard and mice be connected to two computers so you don't need a separate one for eache computer), and was wondering if that's a possible way of using both without buying monitors, etc. for the Mini.
Is anyone doing this, and if so, what do you think of using the Mini this way? Does it work well, and what are the pros and cons of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Ilya Smirnov

My experience with my Belkin KVM is also good, with the exception of one thing. I can't switch back to the Mini once I've switched to the PC. I have to unplug the PS2/USB adapter from the Mini and THEN do Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock 2. The KVM then switches, and I can plug back in. Everything works fine after that. It gets cumbersome though if you want to switch seamlessly between the two.
I only use the KVM for the KM part these days since my monitor (Samsung 930b 19" LCD) is able to switch between DVI and VGA by itself. And since I'm using the Windows box mostly for gaming these days, I use the DVI with the PC and the VGA with the Mac. The KVM was able to handle it without any distortion when I ran VGA on both of them. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a cost-effective DVI KVM switch out there yet. I could be wrong.

  • Using iMac with KVM switch

    Hello --
Can someone tell me if I purchased a new iMac with either the corded or cordless keyboard, could I hook up the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to a KVM switch and use the keyboard, mouse, and monitor with a PC? The KVM switch uses USB for the keyboard/mouse input.
I have to use the PC for work, but I don't want two keyboards, mice, and monitors on the desk, if anyone's curious why I'd want to do this.
    Thanks!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong... (I'm sure they will!)... but I don't believe the iMac can display a video signal input from another source (pc). It certainly can output to a second monitor, but that won't solve the space problem posed by two monitors on your desktop.

  • New Apple Keyboard for Dual G5 with KVM Switcher

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Dual Mac G5 and a Dual Mac G4 with a Belkin KVM Switcher, so they are able to both share one monitor. I am not sure of the model number of the Switcher, but I bought it because it was recommended by Apple. It has worked flawlessly since I installed it over a year ago.
My problem is this. I plugged the new Mac keyboard into the G5, where the old one was. When I did this, the Switcher just kept switching back and forth, on and off, and just was not behaving.
Is there some software out there that I have to install that will enable me to plug in the new Mac keyboard without any problems with the KVM Switcher?
Thank you for reading this. I would sincerely appreciate any help. Best Regards, Luke 77

Just make F5 as your Dashboard...
System Preferences---> Keyboard---> Shortcuts---> Mission Control---> (check mark Show Dashboard)---> Double click the current state (could be F12). When highlighted, hit the actual key "F5".
From then on, you should be able to hit "F5" and it'll show the Dashboard for you.
I believe there are at least two Apple Wireless keyboard out there. The one that I am on right now shows 6 squares on the F4 key. The other has the dial face on the F4 key. This one also has brightness control for the backlighting on the keyboard, or rather the built-in keyboard of a Mac Book (Air and Pro). Which are on the F5 and F6 keys. Why Apple did that, I have no idea.
You could also use a Hot Corner to open the Dashboard. For instance use the upper left for it.
System Preferences---> Mission Control---> Hot Corners (lower left of the window)---> Select the upper left and scroll to Dashboard.
I personally like to have the Dashboard "fly" over my current screen/desktop. So I unchecked "Show Dashboard a Space."

  • Connecting to PC Monitor with KVM Switch

I'm still setting up my new MacBook Pro laptop. I thought it would be nice to take advantage of my 21" PC monitor while I'm at home, so I purchased my first KVM switch.
I plugged everything in as instructed, and it appears to be working at about 75%. In other words, I can use my mouse and keyboard with my PC just fine, and when I click the Scroll Lock key twice, the monitor shifts to Apple mode; it has the same bluish background my laptop does.
However, it doesn't display anything I see on my laptop's built-in monitor - the menu bar, open programs, etc. Curiously, it displays one folder, titled "untitled folder 3." My mouse works, though there's nothing for it to manipulate, save one empty folder. I can't tell if the keyboard works or not. The trackpad that's built into my laptop also works on my PC monitor. In other words, I can move the cursor on my larger PC monitor with either the mouse or the trackpad.
Next, I reversed the wires, plugging the PC into the KVM node that had formerly connected to my MacBook Pro and vice versa. The results are pretty much the same, except that now when I toggle to Apple mode, my mouse moves the cursor on the laptop's built in monitor, not on the larger PC monitor. Also, my MacBook told me it didn't recognize my keyboard, so I replaced it with a Mac-compatible keyboard. (I learned how to do the hot key trick so I can toggle by hitting the CTRL key twice.)
So my KVM switch is obviously almost working. I just have to convince my laptop to ignore its built in monitor and display everything on my PC monitor, not just one empty folder. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it? Thanks.

Though for 10.3 this will work for 10.4

  • KVM Switch Help?

    Hi
I'm hoping someone here can help me. I want to run a Mac box and a Windows box side by side using one Monitor, one Mouse and one Keyboard. I have a Mac Keyboard and Mouse (Mighty Mouse) and a 23" Apple Monitor. I found a KVM Switch that will take DVI but it only goes up to 1600 X 1200 resolution and of course I need the 1920 X 1200 of my Apple display.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Keith

here is one that does both DVI and VGA for extra flexibility (does not convert video types between the two... seperate video paths), that advertises support for 1920x1200.

here is the 1st 1 that i've seen that supports firewire (not sure that is a good idea) and advertises 1920x1200...

  • 'Charging is not supported with this accessory' HELP!

    So here it goes...
i got an iphone 3gs for christmas and it went fantastic, i jailbroke it and got everything i needed. in february, i came home from college and saw a message saying charging is not supported with this accessory when i tried to charge it with the charger i have been using for a month! so i still had my warranty on it and i sent it off. i recently got a new one (refurbished) on friday so i have had it exactly a week now. all was well once again and just a second ago i got the message again! but this time it wasnt permentant, i unplugged it and plugged it back it and it was fine for around 5 mins and did it again!
i am using the mains to charge it and it is a USB plugged into a plug which goes in the mains, i am using 5.0.1
what could be the problem? at first i thought it was a dead battery but its happened again so im thinking the voltage in my room? Please help me!!!

Discussing hacked and jailbroken devices is a violation of the Terms of Service here.  Jailbreaking voids your warranty and forfeits your right to support from Apple or on these forums.
That said, try cleaning the dock connector with a dry toothbrush.

  • IPhone 4 on iOS 5 not charging, getting a error saying "Charging is not supported with this accessory" Help?

I got a replacement of this iPhone 4. Probably a month or so. I've been taken good care of this phone, but I keep getting this pop up saying "Charging is not supported with this accessory". I've blowed on this 30 pic connector, cleaned it and everything and there still haven't been a solution. I restored it and restore it to a backup. I have to disconnect my iPhone in order to get it to work. Any suggestions? Help?

No, it is a problem with YOUR phone, not all phones. My phone does not have this problem. You have dirt or moisture in the connector on the bottom of the phone, a bent pin, or a bad cable. Get a magnifying glass and look into the connector. Clean out the lint and fluff that is almost certainly there. A dry toothbrush is a good tool, or a wood toothpick. Inspect for bent pins. If you see a red dot in the connector opening it means that your phone has water damage.

  • 2nd Monitor with KVM switch

    hi,
i work for a major broadcast company who use a MacPros for trade shows (NAB, IBC etc) with a mirrored output.
monitor two goes directly into a 23" Cinema Display.
monitor one goes onto a geffen KVM to a 42" panasonic plasma running at the same resolution as the cinema display.
when we switch back to the mac from another computer the cinema display seems to run an autodetect again and takes sometimes up to 30secs to detect, correct and return to use (so we can keep using the k+m).
does anyone know a way to disable this autodetect? i can't seem to find anything, neither can the apple people i've spoken to. i've tried using a single geffen DVI splitter but with similar results.
    thanks

i think i can get hold of some to test. thanks.
is there no unix code i can apply to disable the autodetect? i've applied code for various other "niggles" we've had to great success, i'm just not sure about this one.
    thanks.

  • Photoshop CS5 OpenGL support with latest Intel integrated graphics?

Intel's latest "Sandy Bridge" CPUs (Core i5 2500, Core i7 2600, etc.) included much-improved integrated GPUs, thus allowing for systems that do not require a discrete graphics card.  Although not suitable for high-end gaming, the specs appear to be more than enough for Photoshop CS5's GPU acceleration needs.  Can anyone confirm or deny that CS5 will be able to take advantage of the new Intel HD 2000 and HD 3000 graphics?  The driver specs say it supports OpenGL 3.0 and Shader Model 4.0, both of which satisfy the minimum requirements of OpenGL 2.1 and Shader Model 3.0 for Photoshop CS5.
I'm 99% sure the latest hardware is supported, as Adobe's own document mentions "Intel HD Graphics", just not the specific model numbers.  The document was also last updated in November 2010, before the current series of CPUs were released to the public.

Surely those won't stress an OpenGL implementation that is aimed to work in scientific visualization apps, model rendering, 3D games, and so on?
Having implemented my own OpenGL applications over the past several years, I can tell you that it's absolutely not that simple.  The word "surely" cannot be applied here.
Photoshop, in displaying 2D things with a 3D system, is NO DOUBT using OpenGL differently than any other application has ever used OpenGL.  It's the nature of the beast.  What they put in which type of buffers at what time in which mode using what calls in which order and using what performance features are all open choices.  The software itself makes choices at run time about what parts to use based on OpenGL version and advertised capabilities.  Plus they're using Shaders (on-GPU programming), and there are a bunch of different ways to get that done as well.
In order for a system to run perfectly, the applications and video driver / GPU subsystem have to get things exactly right all the time every time, and not just for Photoshop but for all the other apps (and Aero) as well.  Though Intel and the others may do plenty of testing, what might work on a test bench might not work when combined dynamically with other things in ways that only happen on an end-user system.  Note the number of video game bugs fixed in each driver release.
However complex you think OpenGL is, multiply that by 100 or more and you may be getting into the ballpark.

I'm using a Windows 7 brand new computer. Im able to install iTunes correctly, but I have an iPhone and the Apple Mobile Device Service Support will not install. I need that software in order to sync my phone. So far I have extracted the files and tried to install the service separately, and it couldnt because my system "has not been modified". Please help! Oh wait, that article is incorrect for what I need it for. I probably should've clarified. I still have the old computer, but I don't want to have to continue using it.

  • 1st gen ipad - charging not supported with this accessory - help?!

my ipad has recently stopped recognizing my original wall charger... i have tried other chargers and cables, cleaning the connections, charging on a dock (which never charged it in the first place, but i thought it was worth a shot!) if i leave it plugged in it slowly climbs a few percent, but i doubt if i left it plugged in for a solid week it would ever get to 100%
i'm currently trying to rest my ipad as well and the internet connection i have here in nunavut is painfully slow to say the least, it never goes further than about 3-400 MB before it times out... and of course i can't recall the passcode to unlock the restrictions to do it manually :S
    anyone have any ideas?
    thanks in advance!!

This usually indicates a problem with the dock connector on the bottom of the iPad.  If you haven't already tried, try gently brushing it with a clean, dry toothbrush and blowing on it with a can of compressed air.  Also closely examine it for any bent pins that may be shorting.  If no joy, make an appointment with the Genius bar at a nearby Apple store to have it examined.
