I've lost spell check in almost every application [SOLVED]

I'm not sure what just happened, but I no longer have spell checking capability in nearly anything. OpenOffice, Firefox, and LyX just to name a few. It still works in Gedit, so something is happening. I have both Aspell and Ispell installed. I have the OpenOffice spelling package installed. I didn't really change much. In fact, the only thing I changed was removed some "orphans" to find out one of them was necessary to web browsing (nss-mdns... possible bug report later). I reinstalled all of them to see if it helped.
And....
I also replaced my version of FF3 (firefox3-systemcairo) with the one in the repos, complete with the xulrunner update and such. Any connection here?
--EDIT--
OpenOffice was a fluke. It turns out that the development branch is the only one suffering from this. I could have sworn it worked, but it's working. I'm probably wrong here.
The others?

  • Lost Spell Check in 7. No continuous red lines.

I have found that we have lost the red underlining of a misspelled word, instead it disappears if you continue writing a sentence. Also, if you are typing out an email in applications such as Google Mail, the underline will not reappear if you save it as a draft than return to it. This is an issue I have because I prefer to spell things correctly and would like to have my phone be able to correct large words. But I could write a sentence quickly like:
The quick bronw fox jumped over the lazy dog.
And if it didn't auto correct the word 'brown' it would not stay underlined as an indication of misspelling.
Is this something that needs to be changed within the settings of my iPhone and iPad because I read other questions about this and they all seem to be for computers because I can't find any ways around it.
Or if this is an error please fix this so it stays underlined and works in all apps accessable through the phone like you had before you updated everything.
Thank you in advanced for the fix or the advice anyone can share!
This is in reference to iPhone 4S and iPad 2 with the new iOS 7.0.2 update.

  • Lost spell checking ablity

I noticed today that the Mail app no longer underlines mis-spelled words in red. I went to the Edit menu and chose Spelling and Grammar and the "Check Spelling While Typing" option is checked. I chose the "Show Spelling and Grammar" option but nothing appeared. There is also no icon in System Preferences for Spelling and Grammar either. Anyone know what could have happened and how to get this working again? Thanks a bunch

I did a quick Google search and learned to use the Disk Repair utility to repair the permissions. I assume a SMC reset (according to an obscure Google result) was to shutdown the mac and unplug the power for a minute or so. Then restart. Not sure which one did the trick but the spell checking appears to be back on.

  • InDesign cs6 spell check and master pages

I have created a set of master pages for a template in InDesign cs6. When I create a document from this template and apply "spelling", the spell check goes through every master page before moving to the document. How can I stop spell check from going to master pages unless, of course, the master page is highlighted? I have tried locking all master page objects and have also tried selecting the option of not allowing selection of master page locked objects. I have allowed, and disallowed, the override on master page items Nothing seems to work. I would like "spelling" to apply only the pages in the document, or only the selected page in the document.

If you go to Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling
You get a dialog box - the only options are for All Documents, Current Document, Story, To End of Story, or Selection
These are the options for checking spelling, ignore masters is not an option, unfortunately.
But you can select a range of text and use the Selection option to check the spelling.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can add Greek Language to spell-checking dictionary?

How can I add a new language in the spell-checking dictionary that is not the given options, specifically Greek?
And if there is a way can I do it to other applications as well (Safari, Textedit etc.)?

Spell checking is not an application feature but a system one.
When a checker is installed, it is available for every modern application.
Is Grrek available in the list of languages available from
    System PrefPane entitled International ?
    If itsn't, install it.
Maybe this will connect a spellchecker too.
If it doesn't, grab a checker from cocoaSpell.

  • Spell Check For Mail (10.5.7)

Does anyone know of a good, reliable spell check for Mail?

Ok. Not sure what I did - but I can now select "Show Spelling & Grammar.
However, when I now miss-spell a word, it gets underlined in red (check spelling as you type).
This where I need educating. I would have presumed that I could click the underlined word and be shown spelling suggestions (because I get this option in so many other software packages).
Secondly, is there a way of doing the following:
    1. Automatically launch the spell checker before sending? Or do I have to manually launch the spell checker each and every time? If I check "Show Spelling & Grammar) it defaults to not showing it when I re-launch.
    2. Can I Customize a button for the toolbar in oredr to have Spelling be launched from a click of a button?

  • Foreign Language Spell Check with Mail

I understand that using Pages, one can set different languages for Spell Check, but I seem unable to do this when writing e-mail messages. Is it possible to type an e-mail in a foreign language, and set Mail or is it elsewhere - to have spell-check not underline every foreign word in red - but to actually correct real spelling errors in the selected language - other then English? And can I then I toggle back and forth between spell-check in various languages, as my correspondences take place in a number of languages?
    Thanks in advance,
    john

    boksey wrote:
your suggestion is specific to Mail
Actually, any application that uses the basic text editing features of the OS will use the same spelling system. Pages seems to have its own spelling system that actually looks inferior (at least in my '08 version).
what if I am looking for Hungarian - a language not listed in the pop-up section.
You are going to have to do some research. There are a couple of options listed here: http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/AddingAdditionalDictionaries
I have no idea if they will work.
A Google search suggests that Snow Leopard does have a Hungarian spell-check - but the question is - where?
I don't think so. The link above indicates that you may be able to add dictionaries, including one for Hungarian. The screenshots were old, so I'm not sure if it still works. It's all in Hungarian so that's all I can tell from the site.
And can it be used with Mail?
Yes. Once you get it installed into the OS spelling system, it will be available throughout the OS - except for those applications that have their own system.

  • Learning a new word with spell check

When I click on learn the machine beeps at me and won't learn. It is not greyed out. I have checked the dictionary location and both user and main are in the right place. I have got rid of the preferences file and restarted appleworks? Anyone got any ideas? is it possible for the user dictionnary to be full?

    nicholas eve wrote:
I have got rid of the preferences file
AppleWorks 6 keeps a set of Preferences and Cache files for each User, not just a single preferences file. See *my post in this thread* for details on deleting the prefs.
is it possible for the user dictionary to be full?
The AppleWorks 6 User Dictionary will hold only about 6000 words, so filling it is certainly a possibility. I had thought the Learn button would be greyed when that occurred, though.
You can get a check on how many words there are in your User Dictionary pretty easily:
With a document open, go Edit > Writing Tools > Edit User Dictionary.
In the dialogue, click the disclosure triangle beside Text File, then click Export.
Choose a location for the file, then click Save.
    Open a new WP file.
    Go File > Insert...
Locate the User Dictionary Text Export file you just saved (it will be greyed).
Use the File Format popup menu to change to either Text or All Available.
    Select and Open the file.
Go Edit > Writing tools > Word Count to get a count of how many entries there are in your User Dictionary.
Further steps: You might try creating a new User Dictionary.
Go Edit Z. Writing Tools > Select Dictionaries...
    Click User Dictionary, then New.
Give the new dictionary a name ('User Dictionary 2' is fine), then Save.
If the new dictionary is not automatically selected as the Currently Selected Dictionary, Click Choose, and select it.
    Close the dialogue.
Test the new dictionary's learning ability.
If all is well, you can fill the new dictionary with the contents of the old one.
The fastest way to do this is to Import the Text file you exported earlier (for the word count).
A slower way, but one that will show you any arising problems, is to spell check the AW document you used for the word count. The spell check should question every word on that list, giving you a chance to spot and drop words that you don't expect to use, or that are misspellings that were learned in error.

I use the UK spell checker quite often a few red marked errors appear during typing an e-mail. When I fix one the other marked text are unmarked. Pressing the spell check button just brings up the message you are using a spell as you go bla bla. The problem stared a few weeks ago.

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • Spell Check Dissapearing

Hello all. I have an interesting situation and couldn't find the answer either here or on BBforums.com.
One of my users, who is using an AT&T 8310, is missing the Spell Check function, almost completely. After wiping the handheld, it will be there. I can even turn on Mobile Network and it will still be there, but when I activate it on the BES, it will dissapear. It's gone from the main Options menu as well as the Messages > Options list.
Any ideas? It sounds like a setting he's setup which is saved on the BES, but I don't know where to go to rectify the issue.

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

  • No more volume click or spell check.

Sometimes after my computer has been running for a while the click that the computer makes when you raise or lower the volume stops working. Spell chick also cuts out. I know that sounds odd but that is what it is doing.

    Hello Daniel:
I do not know what would cause the alert sound to stop working. In the case of spell checking, that is either on or off - again, I do not understand what would cause it to quit.
    "Checking spelling as you type
In many Mac OS X applications, you can have the application automatically check your spelling as you type. When you mistype or misspell a word, it's underlined in red so you can quickly spot errors and correct them.
Open the application that you want to use and choose Edit > Spelling > "Check Spelling as You Type."
If you don't see this item in the Edit menu, the application doesn't provide the Mac OS X spell-checking feature. The application may have its own spell-checker. Look in the application's preferences or menus for a spell-checker."
