I've lost the administrator password

Hi, I've got a MacBook Pro Mac OS X 10.6.8. I've forgot the administrator password. Is there a way to rescue it or to get a new one? I hoped they would send it by email, but I couldn't find how to make the request for it. Thanks!!

  • Resetting the administrative password on an Officejet PRO 8600

    I lost much of the content of a 4 year old Mac when an electric short burned out the insides in a manner that Apple was unable to determine the causes. The end result is that I found that the administrative password for my 8600 died with the old Mac as I was unable to recover the Keychain which had all the password information in it. I wish now that more importance had been stressed in the instructions when passwords were being set-up, about the future need of them in order to utilize so many important features of the printer.I would very much appreciate any guidanc I can get in how to go about resetting the administrative password of my 8600.

    Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that you are trying to reset the administrative password for your HP Officejet Pro 8600, and I am happy to help! You can do a reset of the printer using the LED screen on the printer. Select Setup, then Tools, then Restore Factory Defaults. "Restore Factory Defaults" is the last item on the list, and then you will have to scroll down to see it.
    This will erase all settings on the printer including the administrator password. Hope this helps!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

    I downloaded Mavericks and it won't install. I did re-set my password and when I click on Install for Mavericks, I still get a box for "administrator password" and it still won't accept my new password. Is there a difference between my Apple ID and the administrator password they're asking for? I never had an administrator password-- I just hit enter and have never had a problem before with previous installations. I'm on an iMac, from 2007, running Mt. Lion (version 10.8.5). I've been looking for other's posts who may be having the same problem, but haven't found any. Can anyone help?

    Ugh. The 'no password, no work' thing is a recent Apple development. I ran into it on my system and ended up having to do a clean install on a partition I fully erased.
    I suppose, if you have the ability to, go online and look up how to burn a bootable DVD image. Download the 10.8.4 image then use the Disk Utility to make a boot image of it. You'll need a dual-layer DVD or a USB drive (or memory stick at least 8GB) If you've got an optical drive, burn the disk, if you've a USB device, use that.
    Then get a pocket drive and copy your important files off the system or let Time Machine do a full backup.
    When the backup is done, insert the disk and hold down the C key until the machine boots off of the DVD. At the point you get to the start window, go to the menu and choose the Disk Utility.
    In the Disk Utility, reformat the drive. You go to the actual DRIVE (not the Macintosh HD, but the root above it that is the actual hard drive device)
    I always do this and *partition* it into several volumes, the benefit being, you can store all of your music, documents and importans stuff on that secondary storage volume you make - it will have it's own index and then the first volume is where you put the OS and it will have it's own index as well. That way, if the OS throws a wobbler and you need to reinstall, you don't lose your data.
    Depending on the size of your hard drive, it is good to give your OS partition at least 60GB and optimally 100GB, and the rest for storage.
    Name your volumes, use the little box sliders to manually size them or put that number in the size window, select for the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and hit Apply and then the Disk Utility will quickly create your new partitions.
    Once finished, quit the Utility and it will return you to the OS installer. Select the volume you want to install to and it should start up and install.
    Once the installation is done, you'll get the new machine startup then you MUST put in a password for the computer. Once you're in, and to the desktop, don't bother with any Mountain Lion updates, go right to the App Store and get the Mavericks update and let it install the app to your Applicaitons folder, then do that install.
    On a side note, there MAY be a way to make a disk image from the Mavericks application and avoid the entire Mountain Lion step.. I honestly do not know, but a bit of hitting the search engines may find out if there is. I think that if you looked for "make Mavericks boot disk or boot image' you may find something.
    Good luck!

  • I want to turn off the administrator password which is required when my kids sign onto the internet. They have their own passwords and pages.

    Hey Csound1,
    Looks like we found a solution, it's Mickey Mouse but it works.  After talking to two Apple Senior Advisors, this is the fix they came up with:
    The first advisor after exploring it for awhile, came to the conclusion the way to get my calendars back local On my Mac with the alerts as I had then was to import the saved .ics files with my my 'dangerous email alerts' being removed then me manually re-adding them.   I said that was a no go.
    The second advisor, after speaking with me for awhile and trying a few things that we'd tried before said he'd do some work on his end and call me back.  A couple of hours later he phoned back with a fix that I guess will have to do, his solution:
    I had to go into Calendar-preferencs-accounts and create a Gmail calendar, quit and restart Calendar, I created a calendar in the gMail account.  Then I was given the option  in Calendar under File-New Calendar to create On my Mac local calendars.  Next was to create local calendars with the same names as my iCloud calendars.  Now I had to un-check all calendars but one, put Calendar in month view, command-click all the events for the given calendar and drag them to the new local calendar of the same name.  I then had to repeat this for each of the calendars and for all 12 months of the year.
    I'm not done yet but it seems to be working.  As I said Mickey Mouse but doing the job.  It seems creating another online calendar account was the only way to get the local On my Mac option, active again.  What a pain in the a** this has been, I will repeat it again
    iCloud is EVIL.

    If you can't get the discs, call Apple with the serial # and ask for them. They should send them to you for a reasonable charge.

  • The administrator password is only recognized at login

    After installing Leopard I have an awkward problem with the administrator password. Luckily the password is recognized by the "login" process so I can log in and use my computer for work, but it is not accepted at almost all other occasions when the system for whatever reasons prompts for the administrator password, like with Software Update and System Preferences.
    The error message is different when I deliberately type a wrong password, which shows that the system does recognize the administrator password but refuses to accept it.
    My guess is that something is wrong with the Keychain Access. In fact there is an update for that application but I cannot install it.
    Has anyone have this kind of problems? Has it been solved and how?

    Thanks Paul for your suggestion which made me look away from the Keychain Access, more towards the UNIX file permissions and here is what I've found and done.
    The GUI Get Info gives the following for my home directory:
    vjeran (Me) : RW
    staff : RW
    everyone : R
    That seemed OK to me.
    In the Terminal.app, after issuing the command "id" I got:
    uid=1030(vjeran)
    gid=4051(magnet)
    groups=4051(magnet),81(appserveradm),79(appserverusr),120(abe),80(admin)
    (already before Tiger, I've set up these numbers and groups with NetInfo in order to match those on my UNIX account of the company's Alpha cluster)
    Instead, after issuing the command "dscl . -read /Users/vjeran" I got:
    UniqueID : 1030
    PrimaryGroupID : 4051 120 20
    The id command did not see me as a member of the staff group and dscl command did not see me in the admin group.
    So, I did the following:
    dscl . -append /Groups/staff GroupMemebership vjeran
    dscl . -append /Users/vjeran PrimaryGroupID 80
    I was hopeful that this will solve my problem , but even after the reboot I still have no way to successfully authenticate as the administrator.
