I've lost use of my desktop - how do I get it back?

I can't use my desktop. The few files that were on it have gone.
I can't save any file onto it.
If I open the HD icon, the desktop is just a grey file I can't access:
"Name: Desktop, Kind: Document, Size: Zero KB on disk
When I'm downloading files through Safari, I have to choose a folder on the HD as it says there is not enough space on my Hard Disk to download and asks me to delete files.
The same when my QuickBooks Application updates automatically, although with this, I can't find an option to download the update elsewhere, so it is not updating.
Is there any way to get my desktop back without reinstalling everything?

Run a disk Utility on it. Do a repair permissions, then a repair Disk. If this does not fix the problem, then I would say that to check if that is actually the real Desktop folder. I know that once, i deleted the whole folder then tried to make a new one folder, and it said that I could not access the folder, even though I was an administrator. I had to make a new account on the same computer then migrate all the stuff in my original account folder and move it to the new one. This worked for me. I would say if it still does not work, then back everything up and reinstall.

Alle other apps are working fine. The marketplace had an layout, when i bought the smartphone (ZTE Open C).

thank you for your quick response.
I saw a simple HTML-Page in white, all links in blue or purple. I expected the normal marketplace-layout.
After opening your link at the browser and adding a favorit to the desktop my original marketplace-App-Button works fine again. Now even using the App-Button the layout is back again. Sometimes it can be so simple...
So you solved the problem for me.

Synch your contacts back from whichever program on your computer you've stored them in (Outlook, Address Book) or from your cloud service.
Not using your phone as indended and didn't have your contacts on your computer or with a cloud service? Then they're gone.

You cannot delete the Apple builtin apps.
1. Use Spotlight to search on iPhone.
2. Check if Settings > General > Restrictions > iTunes Store: ON (green)
3. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

Did you backup the iPad first? If you did - restore from the backup in order to restore the photos in the Saved Album on your iPad. If the photos were synced to the iPad, then sync them back again via iTunes.

If you did backup first, you will be restoring your most recent backup and you should be OK. But know that when you restore from a backup, you restore everything that is in that backup onto the iPad .... All documents, device settings, all data and so on. You cannot just select photos to restore to the iPad. It's all or nothing.

Are you missing bookmarks or are you looking for a way to access the bookmarks?
If you have problems with bookmarks and history not working properly then check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

I see that you have just lost it from the Dock, not from Mac OS X. To recover it, open a Finder window and drag Applications from the Finder sidebar to the right part of the Dock, so it will appear there. A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Hey there tjbliven,
It sounds like you are not able to use the dictation feature of iOS 8, becuase the microphone icon is missing. It seems to me like Siri may be turned off, which would cause the icon to not be there:
Siri settings - iPhone
To set options for Siri, go to Settings > General > Siri. Options include:
Turning Siri on or off
That should get the dictation feature back for you.
