I've never been good at algebra

I'm not quite sure what to search for so I can't find anything in the threads about this.  If you know of a thread just point me to it and I'd be much obliged.  Here is what I'm trying to do. I have 16 students trying to raise money for a trip.  The trip costs $500 dollars.  But, they are also allowed to raise extra money to cover the cost of a passport and a few other things.  I'm trying to get the table set up so that it will tell me how much the total group has left to raise for each person's $500, not counting when some people raise over that amount. The problem is that when I total everything up, the people who have raised over the $500 mess up the totals.  I can't find a function that will will figure up the sum of a row, only counting up to a certain amount per cell.  If that's not possible, I don't know quite what else to do.
Here's a sample of the table I'm working with.  Column B is a list of group fundraisers that we have done.  Column A is th total from those events.  Starting in column D is each student and how much they get from each group fundraiser.  The totals are at the bottom.  As you can see, Pete Rose has raised 150 dollars over the 500, which is good for him.  But I only need to count the 500 for my total group cost. So when I sum the grand total row, I need it to automatically subract the 150 out of his row, or only be able to add a max of 500 out of each cell. Otherwise the total is too high because there is extra money in the row not actually going towards the group cost.  I hope this makes sense.  If you need some clarification let me know.  Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure about wht formulas you have in the grand total row, but if you learn how to use the IF function, it allows you to test what your result will be, adn account for it. Assuming it was just summing a column of Data and you want to limit to 500, you could do the following:
=if(sum(D3:D10)>500,500,sum(D3:D10))
If will first test to see if it is more than the $500, if so, put in $500, otherwise put in the real sum.

  • I've never been good at Networking...

I work for a Musical Theatre company and we are trying to get a little bit more current with some of our technologies... Our big thing right now is that our office is actually 3 offices. 2 of those are connected, but the 3rd is on its own and communication between it and the others is difficult. The office on its own has a mac computer, as well as one of the two connected offices, with the third office having a PC.
We would like to get some sort of video chat up and running between the offices (and it would be great if it could include both mac and pc). It would need to be running all the time, or something where we could see eachother's webcams without needing the other computer to approve.
I hope that made any sort of sense...
    Thanks!

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

  • Why does Frequent Locations log places I've never been to?

I've gone in to check the history of the Frequent Locations and I noticed it has logged places that I have never been to or on days I know I have never been there. Why or how does it store these locations when I know for a fact I was just sitting on my couch at home at the date and time it shows me on the other side of town?

1= What a shame that this normally helpful and positively spirited amenity (Apple Discussions) is so very often spoiled by the abject negative and supersilious bile from some individuals?
2 - Instead of going out of your way to prove that Mac owners and users are unapproachable smart ars*s, why not go out of your way to actually help people out who have a genuine query?
3 - If you take the trouble to read my post, you will easily find that the content is written in good grammar, in proper English, and is as calm as a Californian Mayor. Unfortunately, a state of mind not evident in your own ranting post, sir.
4 - When the day comes that more experienced and polite posters on here need to take advice from the less composed and less well-mannered ones like you, it will truly be time to close the curtains on this show we know as Apple Discussions.
For your extra information, and I assume this will be filtered by your own bias, there IS, whether you like it or not - a lot of discomfort around many of the changes that have been made to iPhoto 11. I'll not trouble you with a list of them which are plastered all over Apple Discussions and elsewhere, but they are there and need to be addressed. Suffice to say, those negative changes have rendered the program to have a feel of "not really well thought through". A little bit like the first response to my original post.
Now, if anyone has a constructive answer to my original post, I'd be delighted to hear it.

If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc, or a shot of compressed air but chances are good that your optical drive has failed. You can either replace it or buy an inexpensive external unit (but not Apple's as it won't work on macs with a built in drive working or not).

    Hello cpikehfx,
    Welcome to the forums.
You can try one of the two options below to work around your issue.
Drag and drop the files from the desired music folder to the BlackBerry Music folder using the computer.
Open the desired music folder on the computer
Go into Computer or My Computer and open the BlackBerry network drive
    Open the Music folder
Drag the desired music files from the computer music folder to the BlackBerry Music folder
    Try a different Windows profile.
Go into the Control Panel and create a new user account
Put some music files in a folder that is accessible by all profiles or transfer them to the BlackBerry device
Log out of the current profile and log into the new profile
Transfer music into iTunes or Windows Media Player
Launch BlackBerry Link and go through the setup configuring the music source of your choice
Click on the Computer name in the bottom left corner of Link
Select Music on the left side
Drag and drop the desired music files from the list to the BlackBerry name in the bottom left corner of Link
If neither of these options work for you then you will want to contact your mobile service provider and ask that this issues be escalate to BlackBerry support for investigation.
Hope this helps. Have a good day.

  • Craigslist with way too many new Macs in the box never been opened? How?

OMG I was looking to buy a used Mac Book Pro and someone suggested I look at Craigslist. What is up with all these new in the box never been open computers? How can this be, are they all stolen? My son suggested it and I work overseas and he says if you find one let me know and he'll pick it up. Isee a lot of 15" i7 going for 1700 and they list for 2200 plus tax. I even see people with pictures of like 3 in a box sitting on their bed.
Can someone enlighten me on this? I love the idea of saving say 650 bucks but I would just die if my son gets a box of rocks. I told him to open it up and power it up and if it's on the bad side of town don't even think of it. Is there a listing of stoen serial numbers out there?
My dad always said if it sounds too good to be true then it most likey is.
    DK

While no one can say with certainty, the strong likelihood is that if someone claims to have several Macs available that have never been opened, they're either 1) stolen or 2) the seller is lying about what they have. If the computers are discontinued models, it's dimly possible that the seller managed to pick them up on a closeout from someone or are dealers themselves closing out old gear; Best Buy sometimes eBays demo gear and may in some cases eBay discontinued stock.
But if someone is showing multiple boxes on their bed and claiming that they're current models in sealed boxes, it's most likely either a fake - either used gear, or you'll be given nothing at all (people have been known to seal up boxes with nothing but bricks in them), or the seller plans to rob you when you meet - or stolen goods. No one in his or her right mind will sell legitimately-obtain Macs new in the box for that much less than they sell at normal dealers.
I'd strongly suggest avoiding any such sellers; it's just not worth the risk. If you decide to go ahead, then follow Ralph's advice: meet only in a public place (do not meet at your own residence), confirm the goods by opening the box, and insist on a receipt to prove that the seller legally acquired the computer. Receipts can be faked so it's no guarantee, but at least you can show a good faith effort if the police show up at your house and you're accused of receiving stolen property. If the seller is legit, you should be able to contact the seller shown on the receipt and confirm legal sale before you purchase; if the seller balks, he's probably selling stolen goods.
    Regards.

  • How to connect my iPad to my laptop when it has never been connected to a device before

i need to update my iPad to the new iOS and i need more space in order to do it, i have over 3,000 photos that i dont want to use not to mention game save data that i ideally dont want to loose. it has never been connected to any other device before and i want to know in confidence that i wont loose anything. my laptop is a windows 8 (and everytime i connect something to it, it normally corrupts it)
    Many thanks
    and Merry Christmas

Just plug it in and you should see a window come up asking what you want to do. Then you can choose to import your photos. Game save data will be backed up with iTunes once you get that installed.

    Hello,
My iPad 2 has never been "paired" with any PC.  My one and only PC is corrupted and will not, after many many attempts, download iTunes.  When I turn on my iPad it insists that I connect to my iTunes.  How can I avoid this and just get the iPad to work like normal?  Any help is much appreciated

You cannot do anything with the iPad until you do as instructed by the iPad and connect to iTunes on a computer.
You probably need to restore the iPad and the only way to do that is via iTunes on a computer.
Take it to an Apple Store and ask for help at a Genius bar or take it to a friend's house that is running iTunes on their computer and try to restore it.
You will lose all of your data and settings now because you never backed the iPad up in the past.

I cannot access my old email address anymore, however I have used it for my apple ID and now I want to delete it because the account has never been verified in the first place so my password for it doesn't work. So when I want to download apps I have to sign in with apple id but I can't so I made a new one, However I can't seem to be able to delete the old one. What do I do?

You can't merge Apple IDs.  You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance.  Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’.

  • ITunes was unable to load data class information from Sync Services.  Reconnect or try again later AND Your iPhone has never been backed up to this computer AND always Not Responding

First: I get the message telling me that "iTunes was unable to load data class information from Sync Services.  Reconnect or try again later."
Second: In the Summary Tab under Backups, iTunes is telling me that my iPhone has never been backed up to my computer - which is not true. It's also telling me that my iPhone has never been backed up to iCloud. Again, not true. Although my backups are all missing from iTunes, I can see what I think is them in their folder: C:\Users\*your user name here*\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync.
Third: iTunes is SLOOOOOOOOW. It takes nearly ten minutes - sometimes more - to launch, and when it does, it's constantly not responding. It seems every time I touch something it stops responding.
Fourth: I've been searching this "help" forum for a solution, and I've seen many other references, yet the only suggestion I've seen from someone from Apple is a reference to a solution that is over 2 years old - and DOESN'T WORK for anyone I can see who's tried it!
I've tried everything I could think of, and that others have suggested, including:
    Uninstalling and re-installing iTunes
Ensuring I have the latest version of iTunes
    Re-setting sync history
Renaming my Backup folder at the path above, and letting iTunes create a new one
Running around the house whilst pulling my hair and yelling obscenities
    None helped. At all.
Hmmm... Been a devoted Apple/iOS guy for years, but maybe it's time to switch to Android?

I've resolved the issue with iTunes constantly not responding. It's a bit embarrassing. I had a DVD in the drive that was corrupt, and once I was able to remove it - BAM - iTunes ran perfectly.
I'm still getting the Sync Services message, and my backups are still not showing in iTunes.
    Getting there.... I hope!
