I've ordered a new iMac, and need to install a ghost drive which ran Leopard...

Recently my very old PowerBook G4 died, and before I replaced it with a new iMac the store offered to have my hard drive ghosted onto an external hard drive so I wouldn't lose my data and have to reinstall all my programs, which I accepted. The old laptop is now with the insurance company, and I have two hard drive copies - one ghost, one with the data I needed in the interim.
If I put the ghost of the hard drive on my new iMac, will it backtrack my OS to Leopard and iLife '06, which is what I was running on the Powerbook?
If so, can I re-upgrade it back to Snow Leopard and the iLife that the iMac currently ships with, with the OS X discs supplied in the box, or will I need to go out and purchase this software again, separately?

This will not work because Mac's will not run earlier versions of OS X than they originally shipped with. I've never heard the term "Ghost Drive" you may wanto to ask the tech if they created a Bootable Clone. If they did then restoring everything from it is simple using Setup Assistant. This will move all the data, settings, apps etc from the old drive to the new machine. One huge advantage of SA is it will not migrate older apps to the new machine, meaning if your new machine has iLife 11 on it and the old drive has an earlier verison of iLife on it the newer version of iLife will remain on the new machine.
You will need to start over though which is pretty easy, just use Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance..." and follow the on-screen instructions.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

As Niel states you can use your current iWorks.
If you want the latest version you will need to purchase the componets in the Mac App Store.

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

  • I bought a new iMac and want to install my copy of CS3 on it. Currently, I have photoshop only load

I bought a new iMac and want to install my copy of CS3 on it. Currently, I have photoshop only loaded on an older G4. After installing the discs I tried to enter the serial number and an alert said the serial was already used. I did have CS3 loaded on a 2007 imac but after the harddrive died it is no longer installed. Can you help?

I downloaded Elements 11 to my laptop about 3 years ago and now purchased a new computer and need to install it.  How do I install Elements without purchasing it again?

I have Elements pulled up on my old computer, can I find it in the program?
No but if your old computer runs Windows then you can use the free Belarc Advisor software to extract the serial number from inside the computer.
Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer.…
Tip for future reference: when buying software, always keep your serial numbers safe and handy. Don't rely on websites, the Cloud or anyone else to retrieve them for you when you need them most. They are the single most important thing you get when you buy software and they are unique to you personally.
You can download software installers from the web any time but, without your unique serial number, you'll be stuck with using the software in trial mode.

  • Bought a new iMac, and need to migrate all apps

    Hi all,
I've been banging my head trying to work this one out and i think it's time i posted. Had a look around the forum and can't seem to find a solution.
All my apps I've bought are on my Mac Mini and the ones I use are on my iPhone. I have recently bought an iMac (love it) and am in the process of moving everything over. I've done this manually rather than through Time Machine restore as a way to clean out years of memory hogging junk. How do I transfer my apps i've bought across to the new iMac?
    Thanks for your help.

hi thanks for your help. Unfortunately that isn't going to work for me. My iTunes library was 'corrupted' for lack of a better word - on my AppleTV it was still showing podcasts that i had deleted. Also the folder structures for my library was a mess. I have over 3TB of media spread out over 5 external hard drives and I'm rebuilding the library. i've reimported all my music, movies, TV shows and podcasts (fixed the problem with my AppleTV) but now have an issue with getting my apps into the library.
I had found the app files in Music > iTunes > Mobile Applications. I dragged and dropped them from the old computer into the new one, restarted iTunes but they still don't appear.
    Any other ideas?

  • I'm setting up my new iMac and need digital audio out.

I'm running a top spec iMac with AVID and FCP. I need to export the audio to my amp as a digital signal. How can I do this???

If it''s got a optical out on the computer and your amp has optical in then you should just be able to use a toslink-to-toslink cable to connect them and set your sound output preferences to digital out.
If your imac has a 3.5 mm audio/optical combo-jacks then you need a toslink-to-miniplug (toslink) cable.  Still set the sound out to digital out.

  • Bought a new iMac and need to download Adobe software programs

I had to buy a new mac using maverick os x 10.9.4 and despite the data migration, I have to re-install all my software, including my adobe cs3 web premium suite. I have all the serial numbers, but I haven't unpacked the box with the discs. Does anyone know where I can download the software and use my serial numbers to verify?

  • I have I new HD and need to install

    Hi,
Well I have too many problems with my HD. Now l going to the apple store to buy a new one.
Can anyone show me a step by step how to install the HD and install the Mac os X 10.3.5
l just want to make sure i will not miss any important step. ( LIKE TO IT 100% RIGHT )
    Thanks you guys

    Hi,
Well l did replace the HD but l'm not sure if i did it right. I'll explain what l did.
    I did follow this tutorial
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/imac/
On this page i did follow the Manual on the link below
iMac G5 17-inch Hard Drive Replacement Instructions (Do It Yourself Manual)
On the pdf doc l followed till page 8.
But there was 3 cables to be disconnected. On my new HD l had only 2.
    What l did was,
I did remove the three hard drive screws that was fixing a support around the old hard drive, l took this support and replace around my new HD. On this piece was the last cable connector. You can see a clear picture of the support on the manual, page 8. ( the manual doesn't say anything about it )
    On the Installation....
On the manual to replace a New hard-drive , l just found instructions to instal the Mac Os X on a HD that have already a old version of mac os.
    What i did was:
i did insert the first Mac os disc and l follow the instructions.
when was time to show the destination i could not choose my new hard drive because it has a signal ( ! ) on the hard drive, and i got the message saying:
The Hd is not ready ( or something say that )
Than i open the disk utility.
I choose erase tap, i did select the HD .
on volume format, l choose Mac Os Extended
    I did give a name.
    then l click on erase.
It gave me a new HD icon under my new HD ( just like it was before )
Then I did restart the computer with the first Mac os disc and l follow the instructions.
This time did work and the computer seen ok.
Was that right or i have to do it again?
Thanks you all to help me.

  • I have a new computer and need to install Creative Suite 5

I have downloaded the files with no problem.  I can start the install, enter the serial number, log in with my Adobe ID -- and when it gets to approx. 10% -- the installation stops and asks for a disk with this message.  Please insert disk Adobe Design Premium 5 - English to continue.  I don't have media, just the downloaded files.  I have restarted my computer -- logged into my Adobe account and confirmed the serial number, downloaded the files again and started over.  But it hangs up at exactly the same spot each time.  What suggestions do you have on how i need to proceed?

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, CS5 Premium -- I downloaded the entire Suite.

  • Just purchased a new iMac and transferred all info from my old iMac. Now when using iPhoto slideshow is displays the pictures in reverse order.

Just purchased a new iMac and after transferring all info from my old iMac.  Now when using iPhoto slideshow it  displays the pictures in reverse order.

There's a bug in iPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks that affects slideshows played directly from an album.  The slideshow will not play correctly if the photos have been sorted manually.  Any other type of sort, date, rating, keyword or title, will play correctly.
If you need that manual sort of pictures for your slideshow create the slideshow in iPhoto's slideshow mode.
